Destinations in USA, Canada, or USA territories?

How is the best way to check what is public land and expectations and regulations Say if I prefer to not spend $1k at hotel for a week Or I could maybe find other subs to ask more aspects I could go midwest where there's some city and wooded areas proper for staying short term

Any idea about islands or places that may be ok for some brief camping? Or colder regions also, etc Northeast isn't great for much besides maybe huddle somewhere for a night, even in warmer seasons is not accessible much

Is there a bikepacking subreddit? Or for train or flight and to go on foot, etc Any places to avoid...for gun laws, animals, dangerous terrain, I mean maybe read some Guide for where is known to be safe and acceptable But not something overdone. To trek a little, but also stop into town in some cases

Yes and I'm wondering if it's even feasible to be allowed into woods or how to check. What resource to check for Northeast, or for any different kinds of places. The big area is saying open to general suggestion, very open to any kind of advice. Big could mean no idea where to start, or open to all kinds. So before getting too specific, trying to ask how I can know where besides midwest is ok. I'm trying to civilized areas that happen to have woods that would be reasonable for one person to stay at for a few days

Lots of places in northeast probably don't allow anywhere technically And so I wondered does that leave midwest....but not somewhere might end up near a shotgun And what about islands....if it's tourist area maybe they won't tolerate camping

US Forest service. Look for whichever national forest you want to go to. Alternatively use their interactive web map. Check the local regulations about dispersed camping, you can't always just walk into the woods and plop down a tent. Also look for state parks wherever you might be going. Many of them have campgrounds, some for as little as like $6 a night.

Sure, but any advice how to find proper land or just kinda walk to a woodsy area but not in Texas...

And like ..islands maybe ... Or colder. Just general pointers like is it ok to go some places and.....maybe won't be able to actually stay in the woods

You gotta do some research. This is WAY too broad.

I'd start by asking yourself: "Do I like mountains, deserts, or coastlines?" or "Do I want to stay in cities?"

I live in coastal BC which is awesome in the summer. But I wouldn't recommend anyone to take off into the bush without prior experience IN North America.

Ok so staying to safer areas until I could figure if I'm A) reasonably tolerated or allowed to camp some areas B) also close enough to a City, but to camp from there instead of hotel

Doesn't matter what I like per se. just trying to get some bearing of where to start. I was checking some legal stuff or some general way how things work or IDK... anything to get started. Not everywhere has a campground. And even then, van life or biking isn't always welcomed either. And nor is camping in northeast so I know Midwest or what....but there's lots of spread out farmland. So that's not the same as being near a city.

So if I pick any city, is it even likely there's any woods I could reasonably stay in? Maybe not. Go to wherever to find legit camp sites, but as I've said that's not even the same thing what I said, unless it's near the city at this point so far.

I can't pick a island, can't pick any region....or knowing how to find out if I can even camp nearby In general. How to go about that....

Okay I'm just gonna give you an itinerary for my Island.

Fly to Vancouver. (Where are you from?)

Enjoy the city for a while and either:

A. travel north via bus to Whistler and stay in a provincial (government) campground. You can hike until your heart is content

B. Take the ferry to Vancouver Island and explore the Victoria area by bus or bike. There are some nice municipal campgrounds just north of the city by Island View Beach. Gulf Islands National Park is also very close by with camping options and bikable small islands.

After this you can travel via public transport from Victoria or Vancouver to Seattle. Enjoy that city and then fly home.

Awesome. Yeah staying in the city, and purpose whatever needed in nature too.

I can do airfare unless I somehow manage to bike somewhere closer to east coast and find places to stay along the way. But hopefully same idea. Search for municipal campgrounds, but that doesn't mean I'd have lodging along the way if biking across the border. Could do bus or flight, and taxi to a campground I guess. Depending what kinda trip it is. Focusing on roughing it for food, shelter, away from civilization, manage my own transport, or rather mostly looking to visit a city and keep costs down which relates to such efforts.

This page is the national BLM lands map. It is a national map of all public lands including BLM land, National Forests, National Parks, Department of Defence, etc. BLM land and National Forests are generally free to camp on for up to 14 days in one location. Other public lands have more restrictions that you can look up. Most public land is in the west, very little east of the great plains.

You don’t want to spend money on hotels and prefer to camp, will you be bringing an entire camping kit with you?

$1k for a couple camp items versus $1k for a few days at a hotel? Bike packing would seem to imply bringing a bike. If it's an island,maybe no bike. Could consider a train and bring a bike somewhere for a short trip near civilization

In Canada search for crown land maps in whatever province you want.

There are also some apps that have a crown land or public land option, but usually only with a premium account. Not sure which ones are good though.

Having worked in numerous National Parks in the USA, one common refrain from visitors from other countries, "I had no idea how ENORMOUS the USA was". I worked in Zion, folks thought they could visit Yosemite, Mt Rainier, and Yellowstone on the same weekend. Yeah, maybe in the same week, if you fly!

Your criteria is just way too small. You want cheap...but don't say what kind of landscape. Kind of important. Kentucky is WAY different from West Texas. Heck, West Texas is way different from East Texas. You could drive all day long and still be in Texas.

Yes but it's not as much about the destination per se as much as having a destination and lodging. In northeast it seems difficult to find anywhere reasonable to camp. So that narrows commuting more too.

Say if I'm where I'm at, and wanna bike 20 miles away. That's gonna cost $30 in fees and at least $60 for a hotel, whereas having a sleeping bag get some fresh air and just a patch of ground. But northeast is not same as Midwest or such. Might be possible to lay down somewhere but not necessarily. Get it?

Worse yet is how to figure I wanna go to X city or plan a trip around wherever may be possible to have a small sleeping bag or tent and some snacks

Or an island...like is there reasonably a way to just walk to a treeline, walk a little further, check any rules or dangers and whatever research and be able to do so Or have to put $500 to a hotel every single time That adds up

Already in USA, just looking for lodging since camp gear cost maybe $1k but after a few days at hotel costs the same. And can even cook and sleep using the same gear at home.... So it's a win win.

Not saying I wouldn't also hope to do the nature stuff. But maybe later get more self sufficient or even make my own gear and forage etc

I think you have forgotten about the existence of a thing called "campgrounds", which can be found all over the US and Canada. They are much cheaper than hotels generally, and offer marked safe campsites, and many have bathing facilities on site, so you don't even have to embrace being stinky.

And I should specify or emphasize....it's not just about the camping itself per se, but to not pay accomodations and manage what I can unless staying at a cheaper hostel. Not saying it's not about nature, or that it's about finance. But to sustain oneself or have a place to stay. If I have a sleeping bag, why not be able to stay somewhere for free?

Or find permits that cost less than other accomodations And could work towards cooking gear or some fishing or foraging But that's not the entirety of going somewhere just to walk and eat

Just to make sure I don't end up in some places and realize it's not as expected. Or if there's some idea what to start, like I pick the region or kind of place first...or what to avoid. Tourist islands not sure they have campgrounds nearby, have to check. Or pick a city will be further away from a metropolitan bigger city, the woods out away. Or out west maybe more options overall, but perhaps further from town. Right?

Or eastern north , or south... Bordering Canada or NYC...gotta check if there's some lodging within an hour of NYC

Or California, Hawaii, or some various islands like Virgin Islands. Starting with where is a nice city or starting what's the best camping itself But it's primarily lodging for now So I hesitate to be picky where to go ... That narrows it too much before knowing whether there's anything to be aware of
