Last year for the A-10 Demo Team? Anyone know if there's going to be something special for the final demo? Video taken from Terre Haute, Indiana. June 2 2024.
QuestionThey did in the 90s.
Went to an airshow in Hillsboro Oregon in the late 90's and they had an A10 firing blanks then doing a very impressive short field landing.
Had all the flaps and drag out like this video but set down and stopped in what seemed like 50ft at the time, prolly more like a football field, but still impressive how they can fly that slow and stop so quickly once they touch down
I'm glad for once someone else remembers it. I've commented that a few times and people were like, "Bullshit, they never did that."
Hell yes they did and it sounded amazing.
BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
Ninja edit: I was too young to appreciate the STOL aspects.
That would have been awesome to see. They played the brrrt sound over the speakers here when they had the Pyro go off.
Hey that's cool too.
For added drama, they had wired a bunch of pyrotechnics out in a field and the A10 flew over doing a fake napalm run and they detonated the pyro, you could feel the heat on your face from 1/8 mile away.
That was cool, but you're right, the gun on that thing is a sound you'll never forget!
that would be a cool last demo.
excited to see it once more this weekend
where at this weekend?
Chesterfield, MO
Just be aware, the A-10s at Chesterfield are not the "official" ACC demo team, they are from the guard unit at Whiteman. I believe what they'll be doing, though, should be cool regardless.
I get it in 2 weeks and I’m hyped
Like last one period? Forever?
Yeah the last a10 demo is supposed to be at the end of this year sometime.
Pilot in this video said this is its last time performing in Indiana before the boneyard.
I changed a while work trip in order to see them at the Purdue air show
This gives me flashbacks to playing A-10 Cuba as a kid.
Holy flashback. Loved that game as a young buck. Coming from FS4.0, I thought the moving control surfaces in A10 Cuba were too cool and the graphics were second to none.
Never played that one but looks like a slightly better version of microprose f117a

A-10 was in the next generation after that, when air combat sims went completely polygonal save for the menus and the instruments. My favorite was Hornet 3.0, which even had free look in-cockpit, but you'd lose the instrument view while in it.
I really liked strike commander. Came out 3 years earlier in 1993. The lines are way cleaner in the hornet game but strike commander seemed to handle curves better.
I wonder if strike commander was actually 3d.
Looks like flight sim
Yeah I can see that.
Shoot it with a 600mm lens which I would guess was around 1000mm after the crop maybe and 280mm lens which might have been around a 400mm after the crop.
You're so steady that it looks like DCS. Even assuming a fluid head tripod, that's really nice work.
Fluid head tripod, stabilized lens, stabilized camera body. Shooting 6k and exporting in 4k so I can stabilized the big movements in post with a tracker effect then 2 instances of warp stabilizer to get rid of most if the rolling shutter effect.
Plus that was also the slowest pass so it was probably the smoothest take.
But thank you! I'm working on my aviation website and it'll be almost entirely this type of footage but the entire airshow instead of just a short clip.
Sounds really cool, I love the effort you're going to here! How much did that setup cost, and is there a way to get updates on the progress of your site?
Thanks! I'll post another video once my site goes up...who knows if anyone will notice it though. It's probably a month or two away from being live so no point even mentioning the name yet.
This is a ballpark list of prices going off memory of when I bought the stuff new.
Tripod Legs Manfrotto 525 carbon fiber - $500
Sachtler FSB8 fluid head - $1800
Panasonic S5iix - $1800
Panasonic S1 - $2300
Panasonic GH5 - $1600
Sigma 150-600mm $1400
Panasonic 24-105 $800
Panasonic 14-140 $400
Batteries and cards $1000?
GoPro $400
Camera Gear ~$12,000
Computer ~$3000
Software ~$1500
NAS ~$2000
Post production side ~$6500
If you factor in all the little stuff I left out probably about $20k worth of stuff to make what you see in that video clip.
That's incredible, I appreciate your investment to bring us this great footage! Best of luck on the site, I'll be keeping an eye out for it!
you were so steady and kept the plane so centered on that follow shot, plus the featureless background made this feel like a videogame
I was just so zoomed in that you couldn't really see all the features in the clouds.
On the 50mm lens and go pro you could see lots of features in the clouds. Unfortunately I missed focus or something on the 50mm so that cameras footage is largely worthless.
But I'm not that smooth in real life. I've been shooting professionally for 15 years but there's a ton of post stabilization.
Thanks for the comment though. Really appreciate it.
Of course no A-10 demo in my area :( I love this plane and will be sad to see it go. Everyone likes the roar of the afterburner on other jets but something about the whine of these engines is so cool to me.
Crazy how quiet it is.
I honestly don't really remember hearing the engines I'm concentrating so much on keeping the shot centered up.
I notice the blue angels afterburners but just barely when shooting.
I do put in earplugs for the planes I know are loud but the noise really just fades away when recording this stuff.
The shots are absolutely amazing. Probably some of the best photography I've seen of a plane. Nice job
Thanks! The post processing takes a while.
Even with an rtx 3090 graphics card it probably took an hour and a half or two hours to get the footage to look like that.
Motion track the plane, color correct, export.
Reimport to another program that stabilizes footage in a different way, cut the two camera angles together, export.
Throw it in another program that's really good at sharpening, export.
Put it back in the original program and upscale as little as possible to enlarge the shot so you don't see the edges of the frame where there wasn't any data from the original stabilization, export.
Finally bring it back into the second program one last time to stabilize the rolling shutter effect and export.
Love it when they fly “dirty”
Yeah other than being more unique they usually fly slower so they're easier to track.
I talked to an A-10 pilot who once said "The only thing this aircraft does fast is taxi, and slow down"
Lol
Fun fact, shortly after the Indiana ANG finally got approval for the black snake paint scheme and got their jet painted they were were told to start trading them for F-16s
Wow neat info! How'd you find that out?
I worked there for a few months
Do you think they still would have painted it if they knew they were getting the f16's. Also do you know why the choose to do the black snake paint scheme?
I wonder if I could get in contact with someone up there and do some interviews....there only a 3 hour drive away....would make for some awesome historical content.
They had known for years the A-10 was getting replaced. Their base's mascot is the black snake.
As for interviews, you can contact their public affairs office. I don't know if ANG bases have a base historian, but if they do, PA can lead you to them.
Thank you so much for this info.
This is going to help me so much!
They used to be a viper squadron that transitioned to the A-10. From what I've always heard there was always a big push for them to get back to the viper. sounds like they are getting back to their original mission.
WTF, how did I not know there was an A-10 demo team?!?!
You've still got time to see them but that opertunity is closing fast.

I saw the team in the 90's when they came to the Chicago area. They were awesome!
From the best I can tell the final show's going to take place at Huntington beach CA, just wondering if anyone knows if there's going to be anything special for that. Also looks like that show's away from the runway.
Anyone know the last A-10 demo that will take place where you can see the plane take off and land from the airshow itself?
B E A U T I F U L.
Had the chance to see them a few years ago! Amazing experience
I think I've seen them 3 times so far and each one's been different.
Saw a two ship demo last year where they simulated an attack or something.
This year at thunder over Louisville they had two again but they just flew in formation and did laps in a big oval.
At the show in Indiana yesterday they did a heritage flight with a p51 mustang and then did the single aircraft demo.
Really neat stuff and glad you got to see them.
They announced that this was the final year in Vero Beach, FL when they performed last month.
My favourite aircraft. If I regret anything in life, it is that I will never fly on it and shoot from its super gun
Haha I mean you can still get a VR setup and get the a10c module for DCS.
That's the closest almost any of us will get to flying it.
I’m 99% sure this is a simulator.. it must be. If not, surreal. Nice vid.
Yeah the filming here is spectacular. Idc what equip you have that automated the targeting of your lens but kudos for the end product.
It's manually tracked using a fluid head tripod and stabilized lens and body then lots of post stabilization applied.
Supposedly there's going to be some ai object tracking head coming out so who knows what I'll be using in the future.
It's real. I can post the raw footage to YouTube if you want.
It won't be nearly this smooth.
No need, it’s just almost weird to look at with the stable camera, frame rate and clouds in the background. Nice capture.
They really need to fire off some blanks on those demos 😁
