That sums up so much entitlement I see
I don’t understand what makes them think they should do this in nature.
Well... technically they dynamited that ridge to create 240.... so the cat is kinda out of the bag with the "nature" part
That doesn’t mean anyone should do whatever the tell they want. And it’s still in nature. There’s a difference between infrastructure and being destructive for the sake of being destructive.
Nice to know I’m not alone with my opinion on this topic.
“Destructive” is an interesting word choice in this particular situation…..
Edward Abbey taught us decades ago the highways are ugly. More rainbows and glam on the dynamited wounds of our mother.
Hmmmm.... No. Graffiti all over our beautiful landscape are not the vibe.
I’m all for rainbows and I agree the highways are icky but is paint non-toxic to the environment? Usually it’s toxic. Also this wasn’t a decision made from democracy. This is vandalism. Technically the correct way to do this would be to take it to a town meeting and have the public approve. In small tribes and villages this is what was done. You can’t just go dumping paint.
No paint isnt very toxic at all… the departments come a long way in making sure there arent any volatile organic compounds “VOC’s” in paint. Not that Im for this… but the whole defacing mother nature thing is bullshit, you shouldnt be going after thew few that do acts like this but the millions that litter
Clearly you can ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Think about what you said.
If paint was a serious toxin in our environment don’t you think the first step would be “let’s stop using this to decorate every home in the world”
Edward Abbey! Hell yeah!
I read monkey wrench gang at lake powel, I fucked him up doing that.
I read it for an English class and I was the only one in there who loved it, lol
Welcome to the cool kids group! Lol
Tell me you’re slow without telling me 🙄
Paint isn't destructive.
tell that to the small business owners who have to pay to get graffiti removed or else be fined by the city! Also, its not their property to decide to "paint" Again... it just shows the entitlement these people have exhibited.
Yeah still isn’t destroying anything.
I disagree. The remaining part is still very much nature, and is in fact one of the best opportunities to see a literal cross section of a local mountain. As someone interested in geology, I am outraged to see it defaced by the moron who did this. Also, as an artist I find it trite, poorly executed with no regard to its surroundings, and just plain butt ugly.
Is this on one side or the other of Beacatcher?
Wildlife still lives there, as do trees and plants.
Combustion is one of the most natural reactions in the universe, without combustion and the transfer of energy we would be nothing.
Also, this rock is the same as the rock in the Scottish highlands. If combustion isn’t natural there is no way in HECK the mid Atlantic ridge is natural either, buddy!
Oh…I thought this was in nature. My bad.
Well said 🫤
The history of this gap is even worse. Apparently it was supposed to be a tunnel (much preferred environmentally), but the mayor at the time had a family member in the explosive industry (or something like that). So now we have a gap.
Humans suck.
A tunnel would’ve been great. Humans don’t suck, but certain people do.
True
It was a tunnel, the traffic density increased. I seem to remember houses on the ridge that was where the gap is now.
You would be whining about the bottleneck of the tunnel. I remember how it was in the 70s when my sister got the family car crunched in a multi-car collision going toward the existing tunnel on her way to work at the Iron Gate.
But that was probably before your time, either by age, or relocation.
Edit: or both
I heard that before “the cut” at Beaucatcher (so?) that Asheville use to have a lot of air pollution and smog. The reasoning I was told was because our city sits in a bowl of sorts, but the cut’s opening allowed for the air and its smoggy goodness to keep on flowing to its rightful home in Myrtle Beach….thus why it’s the Dirty Myrtle :)
Last part is BS but the rest is true as far as I know.
It would make a great climbing gym ?
Climbing gym would be awesome
Let everyone know they are gay
Well, rainbow crosswalks just don’t cut it anymore.
We need pride mountain you Bigots!!!
That part. Let’s bring attention to an amazing outlaw trail.
PSA to these and other “artists”: Stop defacing nature and landmarks. Just freaking stopppp!!! This could have been a idea. This could have been done on a cloth banner. This could have been projected with lights. This could have been done on a fence or a wall. Now it’s just an eyesore and you didn’t even do a good job. Whatever you imagined, you didn’t execute and if you’re going to do something like this, you better not get it wrong. And you did.
What’s gonna suck more is the shitty white block that will be put up to cover it, and then the 50 other scribble kids going up there to add their scraggly tags to what used to be a good looking sheet of natural rock/granite.
Yeah that's the part I'm actually concerned about- kids get an idea in their head and then we've got a bunch of dead kids that tried to paint an extremely dangerous cliff.
I saw a natural cliff face (I forget what town but somewhere in Utah) that was erratically covered in various neon paints. I was driving through some curvy little mountain road and suddenly there was neon everywhere. A cop pulled me over for speeding and I asked him where the road sign was to signify the drop in speed. Welp, it was right where the neon rock face came into view. He ended up not giving me a ticket because he agreed it was wildly distracting but also told me that many kids had died in that town from trying to get their tags higher and higher up the cliff each year, even abseiling down from above. Every time they paint it over it it made no difference. The next generation of kids would tag it again.
As I had done professional paint removal from tall brick buildings I asked him if they had considered using a fire truck to pressure wash the paint off instead. He was startled and said no, but that he'd bring it up to their council. I suspect that's why I didn't get the ticket.
That cliff in Utah was natural and twice as high as this. We don't need kids risking their lives for this. I love art but there's a time and place.
It is what it is. To some it is hideously poor road planning or the symbolic of the oppression of car culture. To me it’s still what it is, a huge freaking rock that reminds us what a mountain is.
It’s nature. That’s one of the reasons we live here. I posted my comment because I am sick of seeing things like CWC tags on the fire tower at Bearwallow, reading about dadbod tags in the national parks, and cheered on the folks who went to scrub graffiti off Frying Pan.
I love graffiti. I think it belongs in a city. But I am also from here and know there are certain taboos around it. There are places where graffiti is not done by ‘artists’ but by ‘vandals’. And I think that line is drawn at the nature or someone’s property.*
I don’t see the road getting paint dumped on it, though that might actually be a better “art” project (I think I can use double quotes here because that word has been used multiple times thoughout the comments). I do see the rock, which to me is symbolic of nature.
Painting rocks was a weird trend. Still salty they painted this one.
*even though all property in essence is theft and especially on Cherokee land.
Who had the land before the Cherokee? Who had the land before that? It’s all conquered land. Every civilization, where they currently live, has been someone else’s land until it was conquered or settled. The talking point of “it was this tribes land before” is serious nonsense. All of the tribes fought over land and resources, it’s something humans and animals alike do everywhere in the world. Acting like it’s something unheard of until settlers got here is either intellectually dishonest or just a talking point repeated over and over until you naturally repeat what you’ve had stuffed into your head.
Nice try. If you want to prove a point, you can do your own research and present the info to me instead of asking me questions to try to put me on the defensive or get me to do your research. At any rate, a quick click over to your profile, and that you have as your alternate user name “slavedriver” only illustrates to me that you have no desire to understand the nuance of me including that in the my comment, nor even the slightest motivation to understand social justice.

The Native Peoples of North Carolina North Carolina was home to several distinct cultural groups. Along the east coast were the Chowanoke, or Roanoke, and Croatan nations, Algonquian speaking people. The Chowanoke lived north of the Neuse River and the Croatan south of it. They had (along with the Powhatan, Piscataway & Nanticoke further north) adopted a governing system by which there would be a largely patriarchal society living under the rule of several local chiefs who all answered to a single, higher ruling chief and formed a council with him to discuss political affairs. This was different from the more common Algonquian approach, which was a more loosely organized style of governing, without a true full-time government. The Chowanoke became protected by English colonists in the late 17th century, but dissolved completely in the 19th century. Their descendants reformed during the 21st century. In the 18th century, the Croatan and several local Siouan groups would merge to form the Lumbee, who still exist in the state to this day. Apparently there was also a long-standing debate dating to at least the 1970s, as to whether the Croatan had ever actually existed. In this case, much of their assumed lands would have been claimed by Eastern Siouan tribes. As the Powhatan started to dissolve due to encroaching, some tribes—like the Machapunga, broke away and migrated south to live among the Chowanoke.
Inland of them were three Siouan speaking tribes associated with a culture group called the Eastern Siouans. Broken into several smaller tribes, they were the Catawba, the Waccamaw Siouan, the Cheraw, the Winyaw, the Wateree and the Sugaree. It's difficult to say just how many existed in the region. Between 1680 and 1701, the region also played host to the Saponi, Tutelo, Occaneechi Keyauwee, Shakori and Sissipahaw (possibly among others), who had been driven out of the state by an invasion of the Iroquois Confederacy. Most of these tribes later returned to Virginia, where they came to be collectively known as the Eastern Blackfoots, or Christannas. Most of all other Siouan tribes of the Carolinas slowly merged and were all thought of as subtribes of the Catawba Nation by the American Revolution. In the 19th century, the Catawba moved west and were consolidated with the Cherokee, despite keeping their own traditions alive long term. It is also important to note that many of the southernmost Eastern Siouan tribes had largely homogenized their culture with that of the Muskogean populations beyond the Santee River. There were even isolated communities north of the river who are believed to have acted as Siouans, but spoke Muskogean. The northernmost known tribe such as this—the Pedee—lived in south-central North Carolina.

So whose land is it really? Do we go back to the first tribes? I asked a question, not for you to do my research, but to do your own before claiming it was “stolen” from the Cherokee…. Stop spitting out the talking points you hear from virtue signaling sources promoting DEI which is ruining this country.
Usually, gestures that are performative/virtue signaling earn that descriptor because they’re ineffective. So either DEI initiatives are virtue signals, or they’re ruining the country— gotta pick a lane, brah.
Not all virtue signals are good lol. Just because it’s a virtue signal doesn’t mean it’s correct. It means someone is trying to virtue signal. I know my lane brah. 😎 nothing I posted was inaccurate or not factual. Also my comment was removed for hate speech which is funny cause I didn’t “hate” on anyone. 🤷🏻 gotta be PC on most platforms…. Unless you argue for the other side, then you can call someone a racist or make statements pointing to that with no facts, that’s ok….. 😂👍🏻
No one was saying virtue signals are good, lol, just that you can either critique DEI for being performative in nature, or you can critique it for destroying the moral fabric of the country. You can’t really have it both ways and expect to appear logical.
And this sub is anything but PC. People get away with saying ratchet-ass shit all the time. We usually let it slide unless it’s blatant hate speech and/or direct insults aimed at other users. Yours was the latter, which is why it was removed. Have a blessed day.
I didn’t hate on anybody nor did I say anything hateful besides calling them a transplant. Which isn’t hateful, it’s a description. Big difference. Also DEI is destroying the fabric of society. I think there’s plenty of evidence for that.
I said bye.
Facts and logic beat DEI nonsense every time. Have a great day neighbor!
This is a rock surface exposed by dynamite to cut the gap for the road. Not “nature” or some “land mark”. Check your outrage.
Nah, I am good considering a substantial part of my distaste regards the whole idea and its execution. This is a huge fail.
They can’t even get ROY G BIV right! Destructive idiots!
Came here to say exactly this… it’s a perfect reflection of this morons intelligence
That’s a great way to get one of the most awesome overlooks in town made much less accessible.
They’ll certainly repair the fence now, and probably obstruct access further.
You can get bolt cutters from harbor freight for $18.99
And that 20 dollars spent because felony trespassing and destruction of goverment property...... yeah smart
Lol definitely not felony trespassing...
Yeah, but I’m not gonna be the one that suggests that.
Looks like vandalism to me
We summoned Captain Planet a little bit too close to the retaining wall and left a mark. Our bad but we did get the looters and the polluters

Gay Vandals
Brings new meaning to "Be gay. Do crime."
That is the best band name I've ever heard.
Even taggers know not to deface nature. C'mon
Lol, no they don't.
Rainbow Falls
Looks like it's since been removed, but on Monday when I was driving by there was a prop skeleton hanging from a noose in the center of the colors.
What a shitty person to do this
That sucks… I hate some people.
I know what it’s supposed to be, but most definitely is not a rainbow
A crime

Dumb fuckhead didn’t even put the colors in the right order.

And this is the Climate change group 🤷♂️🤦♂️
It sucks bc it looks kinda cool but not worth it
Unpopular opinion but I actually think it looks cool in these pictures

Gay crimes
it’s the gays
A big metamorphic rock (I’ll see myself out)
How dare they ruin this view of a highway
So because it's 3 or 4 colors, it has to be gay? I can almost promise you that if it were done by a gay person, it would look better than this.
Zoom in on the pic you’ll see like 6 different colors they just blend. This is some gay assville shit if I’ve ever seen it
This really doesn’t bother me too much, it’s not like a blown apart v in a mountain was anything nice to look at. And as far as overlooks go it’s a hill above a busy road.
Wainbow
Those damn Asheville hippies
Whoever did that is a huge asshole.
The liberal agenda
Nailed it. That mountain is a gay now. /s
Did you know the moon is gay?
Oh my god do I actually have to put /s for people to understand the tone of a comment. Of course this is getting downvotes jfc.
Oooooh white folks are gonna mad as shit about this!!!
And we will be able to express it with proper grammar…
Typical entitled Asheville bullshit. This town is such trash.

Is this a gay pride thing or just a rainbow for the shit if it?
Pride month
There's a wounded unicorn nearby...
Graffiti.
Another example of entitled morons who don’t give a fuck about the birds, lizards, snakes, groundhogs, trees, plants, etc. that use that area for habitat. Instead of “eat the rich” I’m ready for “eat all humans” until we’re all gone…but I’d also settle for “push the entitled off Beaucatcher Mountain”.

Pride maybe?
Wonder if it represents anything specific or is just pure vandalism.
Seeing its Asheville, is it weird to NOT be surprised by this???
The end of the rainbow?
It is defacing public property and vandalism.

I hope they didn’t deface this beautiful landscape for the sake of “pride”. That would be pretty pathetic.
Figures... I speak my opinion and of course it has to be silenced by removing it. Typical censorship
Aliens painted rainbow
Some gay s#it
I guess I’m just ignorant to the problem. I live seen comments about the environment, yes. But it’s a rainbow on a rock on the highway, what’s the big deal? lol someone help me understand cause I just don’t see what the problem is.
but why are the colors out of order 😩
Assholes with paint cans
Rainbow rockfall.
It's the geh lol
Fruit loop ridge
I do not know what it is but. . . (sighs quietly) I do remember driving through that while my mom was visiting and she marveled at God's Majesty because of the precise measures in between the lines in the rock.
She was talking about the drill marks from when they blew up that part of the mountain to make the 240 pass. I told her those lines were drill marks. She said it was still God. Ok. I guess God makes engineering decisions when it comes to dynamite (or whatever they used when they made the pass).
Now I can't ever drive through it without thinking about how goofy AF my mom is. 🤦♀️
Now somehow has added more goofy AF onto it.
(thoughtful)
Considering how many murals there are everywhere around Asheville for decades now, I am a bit surprised they haven't used the Beaucatcher pass for a mural. . . Other than the obvious WILDLY DANGEROUS placement that would make it a boondoggle. 🙄
But since city council seems to enjoy artistic boondoggles for tourists, I'm vaguely surprised.
Never thought I'd have mixed emotions about this shit. Whereas the idiot that dumped the paint did a no no bad stop, it could have turned out worse. Even further down the spiral would be that aforementioned moron exposed what would seem to be a good canvas.
The LGBTQ+ agenda that is likely baked into the whole proposition is where I have a problem. We know, we know! "You're here, you're queer" we're over it. That's what you wanted right? Trans individuals right's to abortion access are protected.
Can the community that I respect deeply please stop turning everything into some sort of political agenda? You wanted to be gay. Fucking go do it already!
The cut isn't the eye sore...the cut would be a cut no matter what ... Even nature makes its own cuts for its own reason. There on the other hand there was no need for this paint or whatever it is to be dumped there. reiterating how childish you are isn't making a point . It's just redundant noise .
It’s Dadbod after dropping acid
Pride Rock
Unicorn shidded and the rain washed it over them rocks.
Sums up Asheville
Banksy?
Honestly I don't think it looks that bad. The cut never should've been made in the first place. All the blasted, jagged rocks are vandalism against Beaucatcher and Sunset mountains. We might as well make it look better with pretty colors.
All that ocean water is boring too being just blue. We should dump some paint in there and spice it up a bit too, right?
Nice try, but the cut is already unnatural
How many years ago was the cut made? Can't really undo it now, can we? But what we can do is not continue to fuck it up more.
We can't undo it, but we can make it look nicer. I definitely want something better than paint streaking down the side, but at least they made a recognizable symbol out of it. It's not as bad as the people in this thread are making it out to be.
It already looks nice... Why is it you feel the need to decorate everything? It is bad. It's very bad. And the fact you hold so closely to this idea that it's an eyesore because it was blasted can stop cause making mt. Rushmore didn't make it look better after being blasted either. Just stop... You look like a spoiled child screaming for more paint...again and again and defending it as well. Are you going to lead the committee on revamping that wall correctly so that all parties are fine with what goes there? What about this being indigenous land and the fact that nothing done or said here offers the principal people any say in the use of the land that has been stolen and raped and murdered from them all.
I'll just reiterate my last sentence:
It's not as bad as the people in this thread are making it out to be.
It's an opinion of mine. In general, I think the cut is a terrible eyesore, and should've never been made.
The cut is an ever present monument to the work it took to create.
The sides still bare the drill channels from where the face was cored and blasted stage by stage to make that passage.
I was driving east bound and qirnesswd rhe asshole dumping the 5 gallon buckets of LATEX paint off the top. I of course called the cops.
Being a photographer i did a loop and setup to record video and pictures. WLOS has first dibs on my content and it has been submitted to them. Once they post their story/give me word they are done editing i will post them here.

dadbod
We have some terrible people in this world.
Some Moron: “Oh cool there’s a great overlook up there where you get amazing views of Asheville but you aren’t supposed to go up there so I better get up there and paint the rocks to let everyone know I was there”.
