Apple’s Devices Are Lasting Longer, Making AI Strategy Even More Critical
DiscussionAm on iPhone X so you’re good to go.
I only upgraded from the X last year, and that was only because I wanted the latest watch OS update.
That round steel chassis was honestly peak iPhone.
Apple hardware just keeps on trucking though. I’ll be using my new one for 4-5 years again at least.
The iPhone 15 Pro is peak iPhone. The corners aren’t sharp and it’s super light
My next upgrade will probably be a 15 or 16. I’m usually a generation or two behind.
Some of those super subtle 15 colours look sickeningly pretty. I haven’t held one yet, and forgot about the rounded edges.
I wonder if Apple will cycle back to rounder designed again for a whole. I’m assuming the 16 will follow the 15 form.
I actually don't like the 15 colors. They all look white to me
Yeah I stay 2 gens before upgrading depending on what’s new. 7+ to 12 was a decent jump, and so was 12 to 14PM.
Glad I waited a year, the AI features and titanium will probably be enough to make the upgrade worth it.
The size, the heft, the comfort… it’s the like the second coming of iPhone 4s, am still not throwing it though but would be passing away to a family member when I upgrade to a new one. We use WiFi so 5G doesn’t matter to us.
I’m honestly debating forgetting my home network since finally getting 5G at my house.
The only reason I still have it is to cast to my tv but everything else feels so slow by comparison as to not be worth it.
I’d still use my IPhone 6S plus if I could. Loved that thin ass phone
What were your feelings on the watch update once you got it
It was the 10 update, and the iPhone’s 17 beta at the time. I must have felt compelled enough to justify upgrading my phone, but I can’t remember what specific feature enticed me.
I love my watch though. Passive powerhouse of a little device. I don’t actively engage with it a lot, but I value the data they’ve built up over the years.
I disagree with the rounded edges, for us that rests the phone on our pinky the port always cut into my finger die to the sharp edges. The flat edges are so much more comfortable.
I’m not clear what you mean, I rest on the pinky and I don’t feel any cut there
The lighting port was cut into the rounded shape like my crude finger drawn example.
13 pro max here and I'd still be on the X if it wasn't somewhere in the ocean. The X was the perfect phone and it just fit so well in the hand.
The wtf did you get a pro max lol. I’m rocking my 13 mini loud and proud lol.
It wasn't about the size but the curvature of the sides. I also tried out the 13 mini and the battery could not make it through the average work day.
Last September I upgraded from a 256 13 Mini to a 512 13 Mini lol. I just like the smaller form factor, I went into it knowing that the battery is small so I just use MagSafe chargers like a mother. I honestly cannot fathom how anyone wanders around with an iPhone Pro Max model. To me they are garish and obtuse.
I went from the XR to the 13. Gave the XR to my mom since it was still a good phone. Both of us are really happy with our phones, and Im really happy to see the XR still kicking. It was my 2nd iPhone since the 3gs that I had like 10 years ago haha. Has a special place in my heart
My first iPhone was the 5 and the second was X (≧∀≦) 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Apple hardware is honestly very good.
It really is.
My previous Mac was a late 2014 Mac Mini that lasted 8 years, and I could have easily gotten another year out of it.
I bought a Mac Studio in 2022. Is it really 2 years old already? It's a beast.
My previous iPhone was an iPhone 6 Plus. It lasted 7 years.
My current iPhone is a 13 Pro Max. Holy moly, it's already 3 years old? It still feels brand new.
I wish Apple made it easy to repurpose really old iPhones. I have an iPhone 4 that still works.
I have been a Windows/Android guy for most of my life but I recently have to switch because the current offerings, hardware-wise, are really bad from the competitors.
Windows laptop has garbage battery life and mediocore performance. As for Android, I really enjoyed using Pixel phones but the Tensor chips are just too hot and slow for my liking so naturally between Samsung bloatware and Apple, I think I prefer Apple.
After going for a M3 MBP and an iPhone 15 Pro, I've come to appreciate the software-side of Apple more. The MBP especially is as fast if not faster at opening apps than my 7950X3D 4080 desktop, and that, to me, says a lot about how bloated Windows is. And iOS, for me, is smoother, more reliable, and has better compatibility with apps.
MacOS is responsive and the M chips are very impressive especially in laptops where you really care about efficiency and battery life
But the UI and UX side of things have barely changed since 2010 and I really find MacOS harder to multitask on. I’ve been using MacOS/OS X for 15 years too, so it’s not like I’m new to it and just don’t know how to use it
Apple do some things very well, but MacOS needs some improvements on that side of things
Yeah I use Windows at work and I kinda prefer it. It’s much easier to multitask whereas MacOS adds too many steps and is outdated in some ways
Yeah don’t get me wrong I don’t dislike MacOS, and when you’re doing one task in one app it’s great - if I just need to write one document or reply to my emails or something even requiring more power it’s great - it stays cool and quiet, the battery lasts forever etc
But if I’m switching between half a dozen apps it can be frustrating (why do I have to click twice to change text cursor focus?!). It’s particularly frustrating when coding if you need multiple windows etc. multi monitor support and multiple windows (especially on larger monitors) just isn’t as good as Windows or Linux, switching tasks is slow and frustrating and lacks the snappy responsiveness of opening new apps etc, even with animations reduced or turns off
Can you elaborate? Curious what you mean by
There is little to no bloat on Samsung, mine has none.
Same exact for me. Been a Windows/Android guy all my life, and have slowly moved to Apple, not because I want to, but because I have to.
Windows laptops are very inconsistent, especially in the battery department. Forced me to move to an iPad + Mac + Windows PC combo, because I still love using Windows. Hoping for the Snapdragon X Surfaces to be the solution to my 2 device dilemma.
Phone wise, I also like Android but it’s just so finnicky with some apps not being as good, or the support is not long enough excluding Samsungs, makes me switch to iPhone. Androids have great hardware, and meh software for me, so for simplicity’s sake I use an iPhone, and now I’m not interested in upgrading anymore because it’s consistent and does its job.
How is not having 5G an issue
Make sure 5g is even available in your area on your carrier before you upgrade for it.
I’ve yet to see the 5g indicator show in my phone, and I’ve had it for over a year
I get excited when I see it on my phone next to the mobile indicator bars.
Yeah… but it also depends on the carrier.
I know someone with AT&T who gets 5g, but I’ve literally never seen it on my phone
I have T-Mobile, and I live in a damn desert. I never experienced to see 5g indicators here! But it goes to 5g quite often.
Do you actually need 5G?
As with some of the other replies, I’ve got a 15 and have turned 5G off most of the time - it sucks battery for very little speed benefit most of the time
The only time I turn it on is if I’m at a large event (eg a 50,000 person gig last week) where local 4G can be overwhelmed and connectivity go to shit. 5G can handle more people and fewer decides have it so it tends to work better but that’s quite a niche situation and I leave it off most of the time
In a lot of places in the US, the carriers switched their speedy “pipes” to the 5G antenna, and LTE (and especially ATT 5Ge) has become really slow, comparatively.
5g and 5g uw in my area is AAY better than Lte at least currently.
I have the 14 pro and don’t live in a big city. I disable 5g completely because it sucks battery and where I am, there is no benefit.
That’s completely backwards. 5g has longer range and uses less power
Depends on your chipset and the bands of LTE/5G in your area. Having 5G was murder on my iPhone 12 mini battery.
Weren’t most things murder on the 12 mini, haha
The range thing completely depends which type of 5G you’re talking about, high/mid/low frequency bands have very different range/bandwidth profiles
5G absolutely uses more power on iPhone
To be very fair I haven’t used it in a minute but that was my experience at the time. Just trying to let the guy I commented on know that it isn’t/wasn’t perfect for every location. So it might not be worth the upgrade for THAT feature. But of course… your mileage may very
you are correct if your city has 5G but not good enough signal. the phone will try to connect more often and increase the antennas' power which decreases battery life.
My friend just asked me for buying advice, she's using an iPhone 5.
I had the 11 pro and still would but I couldn’t pass up on the higher refresh rate 13 pro. I don’t plan to upgrade unless something big changes
Same, I love my iPhone 13 but the biggest issue is that the screen isn’t big enough. But it isn’t that serious. I might upgrade this fall, might not
5G is barely noticeable compared to OLED
When you upgrade the screen will likely be the biggest boost you see, follow by the camera, I’d imagine :)
What's your use case for 5G? I'm a huge tech enthusiast and love my gigabit home internet but don't care about 5G at all on my phone. I get like 150mbps on my LTE plan and that's more than sufficient for anything I'd do away from WiFi.
It’s just about having cell carrier availability.
Lots of places where my 4G cuts out in the city and I’m hoping 5G would be better.
My 13 Pro is 30 old months now. At this point in its life it is performing better than any other iPhone for this length of time that I owned. In fact its performance is excellent. The battery still has 92% capacity. I was thinking of getting the 16 Pro but I’m really thinking the 13 Pro will be more than enough for another year or likely more. I don’t really care about AI.
You’ve had it 30 months and your OG battery is 92%??
My iPhone 12 is at 89%. I charge it all the time and use MagSafe. 🤷♂️
Crazy. I'm not using MagSafe very often and I'm already down to 85% after 20 months. Then again I've managed to accumulate 802 charging cycles so when taking that into account, it's not too bad.
How do you see your charging cycles? I have a 12 pro at 88%, curious to see that number on mine.
I use coconutBattery on macOS and connect my iPhone to my Mac, allowing the program to read the cycles from the iPhone‘s battery
Mine’s down to 77% because I’m a heavier user.
Yee, my 12 Pro Max is at 88%
Damn, I must be using mine too much. At 74% here on my 12 PM.
I’ve pretty much only used MagSafe Duo at nights if that’s been more friendly to the battery. I don’t know.
Good charging habits and avoiding intensive use (heat) can make a HUGE difference for battery longevity
The things that cause most battery degradation are (in no particular order)
- High temperatures, avoid wherever possible (higher power chargers, magsafe/wireless charging, and intensive usage are the main culprits to be wary of)
- Charging to high SoC (>90%) and discharging to low SoC (<10%), although there are lesser impacts above and below 80/20% too, and marginal above/below 70/30%
- Numbers of charge cycles. Not really avoidable of course, but fewer charge cycles would be better for your battery
Explains why mine is fucked after 2 years. Nearly 4 months in China does a lot.
Heat is such a killer. My 11PM was great until last October when I had to hotspot for 7-8 hours a day when our wifi install got cancelled & delayed for a week+. Having to keep it plugged in it was always running hot and I don’t think it’s ever really been the same since that
I just checked and it’s actually 93% capacity. Don’t use magsafe to charge. Shallow charge cycles…battery almost never below 50%.
Idgaf about charging. I charge whenever I feel like it and have only used MagSafe charging since launch on my 13 pro and I’m at 88%.
I have a regular 13 and charge nightly on magsafe. 89% right here. Likely will trade in for a 16 this time next year if there is a good trade in special going. But if not it can definitely hold on one more year.
Same here but on a 13 mini - 16 Pro really needs to be light and super-powerful to make me switch, otherwise I will wait for a 17 mini.
I don’t think the mini is coming back. 13 mini was the last one they made
We'll see, but the hope is that it could go on the same type of schedule as the SE.
SE is more than likely taking the shape of the base 14 with only 1 camera based on leaks
18 Mini*
Are you sure it’s accurate? My 13 Pro battery health was steadily declining but then at 87% it got stuck there for 1.5 years. Literally only last month did it update itself to 84% now.
I’m similar, ordered at release, still at 90% capacity.
I’ve had my iPhone 14 Pro from release and it’s on 82% battery. Been a lot of talk about the 14pro battery and mines been shit from early on
I've had mine since October of 22 (Regular 13), and it's at 93%. I just don't use my phone much. My screen time not including CarPlay usage (I use wired CarPlay) typically doesn't exceed an hour, not uncommon for it to be less than less than 30 minutes, and my battery also typically doesn't go below 70%-80%
ive had iphone12 mini since launch (~44 months) n mine is at 82% so doesnt sound that far fetched to me
My 6 month old iPhone 15 is at 99% and 108 cycles. So I guess that means it’ll be at 95% by 30 months? I use Magsafe to charge while at home and the 80% limiter. Also frequently use wifi hotspot while plugged in to USB. It says it’s made to maintain 80% at a 1000 cycles
11 pro max and I'm at 81%
My 13 is 27months old and 93% battery health. I rarely charge over 80% and rarely go under 20. I often do small charges over the day. Never charge overnight.
Seriously, what??? My 13 Pro is at 75% and it shows
They must’ve changed something. I was certain my battery health was under 90% a few months ago. Now it’s reading 93%. Weird.
I’ve got 100% on my 14. I’ve got a smart outlet controlled with a shortcut. I charge every night and when my phone hits 75%, it turns the outlet off to stop charging my phone. It also sets it on low power mode for the rest of the night.
My 14 pro max still has 99, bought on day of lunch.
If you take care of the charging habits + you don’t do any activities that make you phone red hot + you don’t leave in very hot climate than the battery can last a long, long time
Dude yes my 13 pro is also running so well to this day. Personally I don't even feel like I need to upgrade to the 16 pro. My battery is at 88%. It's the best iphone I have had to this day. Gotta hand it to Apple for making such an amazing device.
I might just upgrade my series 6 watch instead to the next iteration
Same, 13 PM is at 88% but the series 6 watch is at like 77%. I recently had to finally switch the watch to not be an always on display just to get through the day. I’ll probably upgrade to the Watch Ultra 3 or 4 whenever the watch dies. And I’m thinking with a battery replacement at some point the 13 PM might last me another couple years, maybe enough to get all the way to a folding iPhone in a couple years 😜 🤞.
My 13pro is still 85% which I consider good for a three year old puppy. I too will likely wait another year.
My 13 Pro is 30 old months now.
Me talking about my baby who's clearly two and a half years old.
Haha yeah; I just happened to have been looking at my AT&T bill seeing I’ve made 30/36 payments.
I’m still on a 12pro bought a month after release and still have 80% battery life left
got 12Pro Max on release. Sitting at 80%
12 Pro from release at 86% here
I’m about 3.5-4 years old with mine and battery is at 80%. Mines the 2020 Se. Still going strong if I clear out the storage often.
Mine is works fine too (the battery is 86% though) but I really want that USB C, most people here don’t have iPhones and if I forget my cable I’m fucked.
Type C port might still push me over the edge. My iPhone is now the only lightning device I have. All my bricks are Type C. Going to all C cables would be nice. I also still dislike the weight of my 13 Pro bc of the steel frame.
My iPhone 15 Pro is at 89% battery.
My 12 month old iPhone 12 mini has 86% Battery Health. Trying to get another 12-18 months with it.
First 12 mini lasted June 2021 - 2023 and only upgraded through Apple Care as it was more cost effected than a battery swap; £30 vs £70
My 13 Pro is at 86% after two years, the battery performs even worse. I’m still deciding on my next move.
I've had my 13 mini for a year now (bought it just before it was about to be discontinued) and it's already down to 91% health. I wonder if that's because I use MagSafe everyday....
I got a new battery in mine, still trucking just fine. I did also have to replace the camera module.
It's going to take years for them to get it right.
Yeah it’s crazy how long these iPhones last!
Still on my iPhone 11. Battery is about 80% capacity but honestly it’s good enough for me
I’m still using the XS and my battery is about the same as yours. It’s good enough and will be for a few more years. It would honestly be kind of cool to daily the XS for 10 years, almost poetic.
Minus the battery life being a little worse now my 13 pro still works like it did when it was new. This is my first iphone and I always had Android before. Any Android phone I'd had before definitely would not be running this well after three years, so I'll certainly get an iphone again. But the way things are going I won't need to upgrade for a long, long time.
Exact same situation here. I’ve always been eyeing the new Android models by this time (after 2-3 years) but not with the 13 Pro.
The longevity of Apple products is precisely one of the things that pulled me towards them in 2020.
I was a student for years and could never afford Apple products, and I ended up paying far more in the long run due to cheap trash from Dell, Sony, Lenovo etc breaking after only a year or two. And I’m not talking about cheap laptops and phones either. A lot of what I was buying was mid-range stuff and almost all of it would invariably break due to issues with screens, batteries, hard disks and so on.
In 2020 my latest phone broke and I bought an iPhone and never looked back. Over the course of three months or so I bought Apple everything and all of those products are working just as good as the day I’ve bought them. Not to mention they’re supported with updates for many years.
I used to not really care about Apple products but I can absolutely see why they’re so popular now. You buy something from Apple, you’re virtually guaranteed to have it for years.
"The company could eventually launch something like “Apple Intelligence+” — with extra features that users pay monthly fees for, just like iCloud."
How thrilling! Another subscription!
I thought most of Apple Intelligence runs on device, so I hope they don't intend to charge a subscription for features that can run on hardware I already paid for.
Way too speculative to get upset over.
If there was a subscription, it would probably be for features that use cloud infra, or maybe for features older devices can’t do on-device e, or maybe for data that needs to be licensed (Lexis / Nexis) or maybe something else.
tbf, the users who currently have subscriptions for AIs, will look for one that suits them best. If apple succeeds in bringing one that offers features that directly help those users more, they’ll make the switch. I think they’ll target the system integration part, as that’s what they have control over and it’s more accessible to the “casual” AI users. those savvy ones will stick with the original AI service providers for more robust use cases for sure
an example is icloud drive. it is the only one with deep system integration, when none of the others have the same system privileges. it’s far from being the most robust, but it’s the only one with apple’s integration
I agree, GDrive is way better than iCloud, but when you use an iPhone and a Mac it can’t really compete with iCloud. The integration is just better.
Imagine if they bundle OpenAi’s ChatGPT + with it! It would be an INSTANT buy for me. Like I wouldn’t even hesitate for a single second at that moment.
Deeper integration may come, but with 1.0 they’re still going to be doing that more closely than with any other integration since Google Maps was the default maps app.
Apple will even take a cut of your OpenAI sub if you buy it through the integration on your Apple device. (And otherwise just let you use your existing subscription if you sign in.)
That last part is exactly what the EU is complaining in about and I agree with them. By limiting Apple Intelligence to only the iPhone 15 pro and iPad Pro models, they’re basically neglecting the majority of Apple devices. It would be much fairer if 3rd party AI providers or your own DIY OSS models could be plugged in to provide the features you want - online or offline.
The ultimate service revenue model was the Bell System; you not only did not own the hardware, you never stopped paying to lease it. That landline phone hardware was therefore built to last longer than you would, because a hardware failure was a revenue interruption.
Now it’s the cellphone upgrade plan.
on hardware I already paid for
So when I download photoshop, it should be free because it runs on hardware I already paid for? Software doesn’t have to be free. Most software runs on device. I’m not saying I want to pay extra for things, but I also don’t think this argument makes much sense considering we pay for software all the time.
However, what’s most likely is that on-device features will not be a paid service, but the service would be for the features that require their private cloud servers and such - things that happen off device. There’s a lot of room for them to expand in that arena and a lot of really advanced features they could create. I think it’s a fair trade off. You get all the on-device stuff and off-device is a service.
So when I pay for photoshop, it should be free because it runs on hardware I already paid for?
You realize this is how that exact software used to run, right?
Photoshop was free?
Sorry I had a typo. Re-read my comment. I meant to say "So when I download photoshop, it should be free?"
They probably saw that Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot subscriptions are lucrative. Heck even Samsung’s Galaxy AI on the S24 series are only free for two years even if had an option to do processing on-device only.

The slowing pace of hardware upgrades also will force Apple to rely more on services fees and subscriptions to fuel sales. If you’re wondering why Apple is fighting so hard to keep every penny it can from the App Store — despite scrutiny from regulators — it’s because this category is so important to future revenue.
There’s an opportunity to turn AI features and other software into paid services, but it will take time. Though Apple Intelligence will be free to start, the long-term plan is to make money off the capabilities. The company could eventually launch something like “Apple Intelligence+” — with extra features that users pay monthly fees for, just like iCloud. On top of that, Apple will get a cut of the subscription revenue from every AI partner that it brings onboard.
If it all comes together, Apple could find itself in a strong position in a few years. The company will be less reliant on hardware tweaks to drive its business and will actually be making money from AI — something everyone in Silicon Valley is hoping to pull off.

Luck, Cheer, Nepali and Discovery: Apple starts developing next year’s device operating systems. The company has formally begun work on 2025’s major operating systems: iOS 19 (“Luck”), macOS 16 (“Cheer”), watchOS 12 (“Nepali) and visionOS 3 (“Discovery”). Now, this may seem early. After all, this year’s crop of software hasn’t been released to the public yet. But this is the usual schedule: The company is already developing next year’s hardware products and needs the accompanying software to start testing the devices. That said, it’s far too early to tell what the actual features will be.
[…]
Yeah weird to think that “are you getting the new one?” was a yearly question during the early iPhone days. Now it’s almost the opposite.
I kept my XS max until i got a 14 pro. Was planning on keeping the 14 pro for a while but between AI and the USB-C port, ill get a 16 pro this year, but then im planning to sit on that one for 4 years or so.
I really hope they don’t plan on releasing paid ai features like Samsung what’s the point of buying a 1000 dollar phone if you have to pay for features
I don’t see them doing paid features unless they tie it to iCloud and you get the full feature set when you have a paid iCloud account.
I don’t think they would do that because then they would have to allow all devices and making iCloud centered features would also diminish their privacy slogan
They would still be able to restrict it to devices with the right hardware. I don’t see them doing it either way but if they did add paid features that’s probably how they would.
It is free in software, HOWEVER, if you want to use advanced or special features that are exclusive to that particular LLM that you have selected to respond to your query then you would have to already be in that LLMs paid subscription.
Yeah but I said like Samsung the features Samsung released with the s24 ultra are the ones they advertised with their phone and they are still planning to make people pay even though the features were the main selling point
It would be a service. Just like Apple TV+ or something. Maybe it would be for the more complex features that require their private cloud servers. So you’d still get access to all the core Siri features on device but if you wanted the more advanced features that require use of their servers that would be a paid service.
They will. Services are a big part of their business. The base will be free and the rest will be $5/month
Samsung won’t charge for air feature unless they’re morons, they gave this long 2 year time period to see how other companies handle their ai stuff, I highly doubt that anybody will pay for galaxy ai.
I agree
And yet the 2017 iPad Pro is not supported while lesser iPad hardware is.
Make it make sense
Previously I’d upgrade every 4 years.
iPhone 4 -> iPhone 6 -> iPhone XS
But my XS has been so good it’s going to have lasted me 6 years when I upgrade this fall.
They made the 12 Pro too good. First iPhone with 6gb ram, first one with the new flat sides design, still powerful hardware, first with 128gb storage on the base model I believe, first with 5G. It still does everything I need. I just bought a new case and it feels like a new phone still. I’m cancelling my plans for a 16 pro this year.
They’re lasting longer because they’re unchanging. Why would I upgrade if it’s always the same thing
My launch day iPhone 12 survived a stepping on while it was ramped against a book on the ground and the corner of an iPhone 13 Pro Max to its screen, the battery still lasting the whole day at full performance. My 5s bricked itself after half an hour in the Alberta cold
Phones, like PCs, have long since passed most people’s needs. If it allows them to text, get on social media, look at pictures, watch shows, and save notes they are pretty done with their requirements. Screen quality is the only real differentiator now.
My coworker is still on an iPhone 8.
My mom was on a 6S Plus until 2021, and only upgraded because she was retiring and wanted to take better photos during her travels.
I still use my 8 plus as a backup.
AI in form of GPT is far from what is being advertised. It’s still very much at the beginning of its lifecycle. I routinely come across stuff on ChatGPT 4o that is not 100% right or limited. It’s nowhere close to being fully capable of replacing search engines. In terms of machine learning side of things Google and Apple used a decade of data through their services to learn from us to only get so far what we see today. In reality training a model to fully understand context is extremely hard. In my opinion it’s going to take years before it is really really good and reliable useful tool.
AI is shit
I have an OG iPhone SE I bought refurbished in early 2017. Only iPhone I've ever owned/used. I have replaced the battery on it one time, and for my needs it lasts me a full day.
I use it for maps, texting, light web browsing, notes, music, and occasionally youtube or the random app here and there. It works totally fine, we've had sufficient computing power for quite some time now. Of course, that doesn't stop app and OS developers from adding in more shit that slows things down without any end benefit to the user of the phone, or you have google trying weird shit like flutter which is horrendously slow and janky on older phones.
I have a real camera if I want to take nice photos, though the OG SE still takes decent ones in good light.
Most people are texting, looking at photos / web pages, and interacting with CRUD apps. If you don't need a better camera or some beefy specs for games, anything from the past 7-8 years is more than sufficient as long as the battery is maintained.
Ye still using 11 Pro Max from launch It’s a solid device and my favourite iPhone
Although I agree Apples hardware is pretty good (I'm still using a 2015 MBP and love it) I think Louis Rossmann's new video is worth watching.
It seems that although Apple has a fairly good track record with design choices, when they eventually make a bad one they do a lot of shady things rather than own up to it and honor a reliable fix. I'm not the biggest LR fan, but he makes a lot of good points here.
I can’t stand him because he says shit like “all I had to do was replace this two dollar chip and now this computer is working again, Apple would charge you 700 dollars and are ripping you off and scamming you!!!!!!”
Meanwhile he doesn’t say anything about the training and equipment and time that would be needed to replace that two dollar chip and that it’s just not feasible for a company like Apple to do that at a retail level and still pay—better than but still—retail wages. Not to mention that apple stores do hundreds of repairs a day compared to the handful he probably does a day.
Labor shouldn't cost $698 for this repair. If I took my Mac to Louis he wouldn't charge that and he's not a $3T+ company like Apple.
it’s just not feasible for a company like Apple to do that at a retail level and still pay—better than but still—retail wages
lol Apple could pay their retail employees $1M a year and they'd still be up billions in profit.
If they're not going to bundle a "plus" subscription of Apple Intelligence with iCloud then I hope it's as successful as Ping.
My 2015 MBP is still running well, lo these many years.
If my 8 plus battery hadn’t gone to shit, I’d STILL be using it as my primary phone.
My 12 Pro Max still has 87% battery health and the processor, screen and cameras are more than good enough for anything I can throw at it. I plan on waiting at least until the iPhone 17 release next year before considering replacing it.
I love this purple iPhone 14 Pro Max and the only thing that'll make me upgrade before it's completely broken is Apple releasing another purple iPhone
New clickbait Youtube video:
"Apples devices are lasting longer and that's BAD!"
They aren’t lasting longer people just aren’t wasting their money on fake upgrades that cost over $1000 anymore.
It's true. My 12 Pro Max still looks and runs brand new almost 4 years later.
I wish I had bought a 256gb 13 Pro though. Never thought I would run out of space but I routinely bump up against the 128gb storage limit. Only reason why I plan to get a new phone this year.
My 2020 MacBook Air that I bought at the tail end of 2021 has gotten remarkably slow. I remember it used to be blazing fast for everyday tasks, and even some mediocrely robust applications like Xcode were alright. But ever since I updated to the latest a OS version, my MacBook Air has come to a crawl. If I have something like 5 tabs open (which is not a lot) on safari, and close the laptop and come back to it a few minutes later, it often glitches out and seems to have a spasm. Safari glitches, going in and out of full screen mode, alternating between white/empty page and a detailed webpage. If I give it any commands (gesture, anything) it sometimes stalls and freezes completely, thereafter becoming unresponsive until I force restart it.
I can’t help but think they’re purposefully modifying the OS for later devices to perform worse. It’s not like I’m using updates/new applications that consume all my RAM. It’s literally just safari open and these issues occur. It simply should not happen.
I upgrade every year. I win?
Apple wins because they get lots of money from you.
Apple hardware is honestly very good. I’ve upgraded every 5 years or so. I’m still using an iPhone 11. Not having 5G is the biggest issue. I’ll upgrade to a 15 pro or 16 when it comes out.
