Any anime that's rated from a low 6 to low 7 on mal you watched and didn't know why it got a low rating?
Low rated anime that you watched and thought it was really good?
What to Watch?Bro I be thinking the same thing lol it's always some wild shit that doesn't give a fck like angel cop that's rated really low.
I've been thinking lately that with the small amount of sub genres, a lot of good anime are deemed mid during a season because there's already another anime filling the same sub-genre slot.
It's like when "Days Gone" came out and everyone reviewed it as mid because we were all sick af of collectathon open world games.
But if you play it now (after these kinds of games have dwindled considerably) it's actually quite good. 8/10 at the very least.
I feel the same is true for anime. I stumbled on "Ars no Kyouju", which clearly fills the "World in which humanity fights against giant monsters" subgenre. While I don't know the name of this genre, it's clear that Attack on Titan already fills this slot.
Which just means that peoples capacity to enjoy and appreciate an anime of the same genre is greatly reduced. That itch has already been scratched by AoT, so something like Ars no Kyouju gets judged much more harshly.
8-8.5 is where all the masterpieces are in my opinion, 8.6-9.37 tend to be crowded with recency bias and overhype (with exceptions of course)
Really dismissive to say that the top tier of shows is “recency bias” and “overhype”. If you don’t like the most highly regarded shows that’s fine, but they are rated that highly because the most amount of people like it. Are you seriously trying to suggest that all these shows are overhyped?
FMAB
Stein’s;Gate
AOT
Hunter x Hunter
Gintama
Kaguya Sama
A Silent Voice
Vinland Saga
Code Geass
Your Name
Bocchi The Rock
Violet Evergarden
Odd Taxi
Made In Abyss
Your Lie In April
Death Note
Etc…
Even recent shows like Frieren, Dangers in my heart, and Apothecary Diaries are still ranked in that range for a reason. Almost everyone who watches them likes them.
Yes
Yes
Hunter x Hunter was so overhyped. I watched the last 2 seasons just pissed off lol
Not sure about that 9.37, only one show in that range, and it's pretty well deserved
I’d say fairly deserved but also a little overrated due to recency bias.
To be clear, I love Frieren and think it’s fantastic, but is it the best anime of all time like MAL suggests? and even if it was its still quite a bit above the other top shows that are down in the 9.02 - 9.04 range.
is it the best anime of all time like MAL suggests?
No show is. Someone might think #1 should be Frieren, someone might think it should be FMA:B, and someone might think it should be Legend of the Galactic Heroes. All of them are perfectly fine choices for being the "best" anime in my opinion, it's just a matter of which show - and especially which type of show - you prefer the most.
For what it's worth, for me personally 3-gatsu no Lion S2 is what should be #1. Still, I'm not bothered by Frieren being #1 either. It is an excellent show too.
This is why 10-point rating systems become meaningless really quick. Tier lists are where it's at.
Legend of the galactic hero OVA should be #1
There's no such thing as an objective best anime of all time, if the number 1 rated show is amazing then I see no problem. It's been months since frieren finished, and still the majority of people I hear would agree, it's a well deserved spot for such a spectacular show, I don't think recency bias is valid now, it's still the top rated both in mal and anilist.
If you were to say what you should think the number 1 rated anime of all time, a lot will mostlikely disagree, and I do think frieren deserves the spot, there's like maybe 5 anime that i think deserves the number 1 spot and frieren is one of them.
It's skipped to the top, and by far, even on AniDB, and that's a weirdly elitist place when it comes to ratings (though otherwise an awesome site).
This doesn't mean it's "the" best (as others noted, that's quite a meaningless category), only that quite a lot of people rank it as such.
As for me, I usually tie my favorite N things, no matter if it's food, anime, or something else. Frieren is at number one for me, together with Aria the Animation and a few others.
Yeah it probably doesn’t deserve to be 0.2 points above FMA:B but I also am sick of people talking about fma being over taken as some sort of heresy.
Honestly I think from what I have watched total yet, it's the best "universal" top anime of all time. Like, I would have to really think what are negatives of that show.
But I also didn't watch maybe top 10 best regarded anime, I keep gravitating towards more niche ones lol
I've found that the older an anime is, the harsher it gets rated. For example, if something came out in the mid-90s and it's like a 7.5, it's probably about as good as an 8.0 anime from the last 10 years.
Anyway, Belladonna of Sadness from 1971 is an absolute 10 out of 10, despite its 7.17 on Mal. The OG Vampire Hunter D (7.01 on mal) from 1985 is also pretty great, though I'll admit its sequel from 2000 was indeed better. (Though both are rated below an 8 somehow)
As for more recent shows, I adore studio Triggers Space patrol Luluco, but it is only at a 7.5, and I have a real soft spot for Japan Sinks 2020 (6.45 on mal)
I notice that a lot of newer anime are better rated than older anime.
back then older anime was watched by hardcore anime fans (back when it was a niche and only geek/nerd would watch it), but now, anime is mainstream and a lot of normies watch it, that means a higher volume of viewers and less criticism. I do miss that era where people nerd out and go full autistic analyzing anime and give birth to crazy theories on x and y.
Nah, Japan Sinks 2020 deserves that score. Space Patrol Luluco is fantastic though.
Belladona is everything.
pet - one of the best anime psychological thrillers.
Dead Mount Death Play - reverse isekai of a massive scope written by the author of Baccano and Durarara.
Gamers - very cleverly written, chaotic romcom.
In/Spectre - mystery with a bit of detective work, amazing dialogue and characters.
Chimimo - comedy with stellar cast dynamics that make you believe they are real sisters, who have known each other for their whole lives.
I quite like In/Spectre. You've gotta be down with the talking since there's a ton of it. And a lot of scenes are just a character explaining things with graphics to show what they're trying to get across. But that's not a bad thing. I quite liked what season 1 built up to.
PET is awesome. One of my favorite.
Dead mount death play actually confused the shit out of me, it feels like they just keep building up to nothing and it’s a bit too expansive and takes very long for the story to actually get somewhere, I enjoy the first season a lot but the second felt lackluster
The author loves to tell multiple stories at once. I like all of them but it definitely is a style that's hard to follow the first time seeing his work.
gamers was great
In/Spectre would’ve been enjoyable to me except for the dialogue. And by saying that, I mean every time she said the ghost’s name was like nails on chalkboard to me for some reason. And she said it so many times.
Dead Mount Death Play
This one could've been a 9 for me, but ended up as an 8 after that ending.
In/Spectre
I liked it except for the last arc of S1. Still need to watch S2.
Gamers
Dang, I didn't realize this was in the 6s on MAL! It's an 8 for me. I think people were still upset it was about Gamers rather than Gaming.
YOOOOO I heard of pet and seen images of it on Instagram it looks so good it kinda looks like gantz. Speaking of gantz it's a great anime idgaf what the reviews say watch gantz and read the manga.
SOMEONE FINALLY MENTIONS PET 🗣
Samurai Flamenco was great and did nothing wrong, and yet is 6.9/10 on MAL
Everyone needs to SIT DOWN and watch this right away. I know why people were mad, but they're wrong. As a tribute to hero shows, the direction it went in was correct. GG, Manglobe, you're sorely missed.
I saw it as it was airing and watching the GG episode was definitely an unforgettable experience.
was great and did nothing wrong, and yet
Manglobe in a nutshell. Great studio that adapted great works with great originals but they all performed poorly.
I've heard of manglobe what other shows did they do?
Samurai Champloo, Ergo Proxy, Deadman Wonderland, The World God Only Knows, etc.
All of which were financial failures despite critical praise. They did better in overseas markets than domestic.
Damn, did Samurai Champloo fail that hard? Based on MAL alone it looks like it should still be wildly popular
Cowboy Bebop is also popular in western circles but pretty niche in Japan.
I agree. Samumenco was perfect if you don't take it too seriously. It was even better when airing with all the gorilla memes.
Reborn as a vending machine (6.51). Relative to other isekai, it's very creative and still stick to the original premise all the way to the end of the season
Genuinely so much fun. The amount of effort to make the vending machine concept work in world was amazing.
Not to mention Bradio does the OP. I love Bradio, they're just a good time in general
I learned about a bunch of neat vending machines japan had. Anime was excellent and i'm excited for season 2
Yosuga no Sora, masterpiece.
I know a pair of dogs who really like the anime
Bau Bau!
masterpiece indeed! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
btw.. amazing soundtrack I still listen too!!
Yeah the soundtrack makes me feel so nostalgic idk why
It’s a special anime
I appreciate you asking this question as all the responses you are getting are new to me anime. Not sure why you're getting downvoted. I'm going to have to check a few of these out.
Facts I'm bookmarking this thread lol
Glad to see more upvotes and so many recommends. Wish i had wrote down the ones i saw earlier because now will be more digging, but yeah i am also bookmarking this thread 😂
get down voted just for asking a question, the most reddit thing ever.
Keijo!!!!!!
i was blown away by how genuinely good this show is while also being completely insane--it's basically Kill la Kill with sports instead of death battles lol. The characters are really fun and pretty well written, and the comedy is almost always hilarious! It somehow manages to be extremely horny without being uncomfortable or demeaning 99% of the time, and it has some of the funniest gags I've seen in anime. It's also unironically more hype than a lot of action anime I've seen--they direct the matches like they're actual battles, and the level of dedication and creativity they put into the central conceit of "you can only use your boobs and your butt to fight" is actually astounding. Let's just say the laws of physical reality don't really apply to these girls LOL. Is it trashy? Yes, but it's like Doritos paired with a charcuterie board and fine wine--it's a 6.92 on MAL but it's an 8 for me!
I went into it hoping it would be “bad good” or entertaining camp, but it turned out to be legitimately great.
same, I thought it would be fun to laugh at but I ended up laughing with it--such a fun show haha
I honestly believe Keijo is one of the best sports anime in existence. They took a scene about a girl pulling a turnip out of the ground with her butt cheeks and made it downright inspirational.
Like bro, there's no time to be horny we got too much hype going on right now.
literally this lol, I don't even like sports anime but Keijo is so hype I was fully invested!
keijo ftw
it’s one the first animes i watch
i remember there was a youtube channel that does real keijo, not sure how it turned out
Yeah, this show is awesome: definitely deserves an 8.
I think it'd be fun to watch this show with some weeb friends and have a "try not to laugh" challenge! It's the perfect mix of awkward and funny for something like that.
Its just the right amount of ridiculous that its amazing. Gate of bootylon is 10/10, hysteria. Also great animation for an ecchi comedy too
the parodies are amazing, Buttack on Titan killed me LOL
an 8 for me
Same here!
Shinreigari (Ghost Hound)
The jazz opening is also a banger
Peach Girl, Ikkitousen, Vampire Princess Miyu, Witchblade, Top Secret: The Revalation, High School of the Dead, Daughters of Mnemosyne, Mouryou no Hako, Uragiri Wa Boku, Trinity Blood, Karin Chibi Vampire
Out of this list I found Vampire Princess Miyu, Witchblade, Uragiri wa Boku, Trinity Blood, Karin and Peach Girl’s scores the most unfair and insulting.
Wait, is Highschool of the Dead really that low scored? That shit is a classic.
Yeah when it first aired it had an 8.2 on MAL, now it’s sitting at a 7.07. It’s definitely gonna go below 7 by the end of this year
HOTD gets a lot flack for being a “mindless ecchi” even tho it has amazing animation and it’s a fun campy horror. The girls are also really pretty especially Saya
That's crazy I honestly think it's a classic. Not even just bc of the tiddies although that helps but it's just such a fun show. That show is like a cult classic something like a unpopular horror movie that people love like wrong turn.
Yeah visually HotD is extremely impressive. Fantastic animation, lots of care put into the girls' visual designs and jiggle. The action is totally good, too. Just a solid "T&A + zombie slaughter" entry. 7/10 is the perfect spot for it.
Witchblade and princess miyu mentioned! You a real one for that
Yup love vampire princess miyu. It has such a great aesthetic.
KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World
This is my answer to that question for a while now. It is way too good to be below 7 on MAL in my opinion
Millionaire detective balance unlimited is my passion project
Low rated anime;
- Geneshaft, MAL - 6.43 (Then again I'm a Star Trek fan so...)
- Key the Metal Idol, MAL - 7.06 (I get why the series is rated this) For the most part it's excellent, really really mysterious until episode 14, that episode is just one long info dump (1 hour 37 Minutes), enjoyed episode 15 more but that was still long (1 hour 39 Minutes long). If the last two episode had been another bunch of episodes it would have been rated higher imo
- Iria: Zeiram The Animation MAL - 7.16 (Thought it would be higher, well done doesn't try to do to much in it's short runtime)
Big up for Geneshaft.
fr fr
Gotta watch iria I'm slacking.
RahXephon , incidentally it's where I also got my username from. The anime that sort hook line and sinker for me
Rah rah?
One of ADV’s best dubs, and a Yoko Kanno OP.
When I first got into anime, maybe 15ish years ago, people still talked about this one from time to time. Now no one remembers it, which is such a shame. It’s such a great show.
That's how we know we're getting old. Series that used to be talked about widely now hardly a peep. Like a few weeks back there was a thread asking "why isn't darker than black more popular /underrated?"
Which is really funny cause considering when it was new it was one of the hit shows for years. But time went on, season 2 was underwhelming so it got lost to time. But it was definitely popular for a long while and no way underrated.
Scum's Wish (currently 7.12 in MAL)
Either you love it or hate it. I liked it.
Also the OSTs are pure gold ( same composer as Your Lie in April, Fruit Basket, Horimiya etc.)
Came into it expecting a dumpster fire. Was enjoyable enough. The ending was annoying, but what I expected to happen.
Punchline! Such a great ecchi mystery. Starts out as silly ecchi and then turns into an unstoppable rollercoaster
Finally fellow punchline enjoyer
Never thought I'd see another one.
Good pick.
Sure it could have been executed better but the ambition was there. One of the funnest watches I had.
Much agreed, pacing was a bit sloppy for an ep or 2 but the continuity for all things introduced and how tight the writing was for 12 eps made it so exciting (:
Domestic girlfriend dumpster fire and banger opening. (6.66 mal)
Girlfriend girlfriend - a very fun harem (6.54 mal).
Underninja - comedy gold (6.92 mal).
Under Ninja was so fuckin funny. I don't know why people don't like it, except that maybe they were expecting something more serious in tone?
But UN was incredibly goofy and hardly, if ever, took itself seriously. It's one of the funniest shows (not counting sequels) I've seen in a while and is definitely worth a watch if you like that sort of thing.
I'm convinced girlfriend girlfriend was intended to be the dumbest harem plot known to humankind and if you just take it for what it is it's very enjoyable. Going into it thinking it will be a true "quality" show will disappoint you but I unironically love it for what it is.
I couldn't stop watching it because made me laugh
I think people look at anime like domestic girlfriend and take it too seriously. If you look at it for what it is and don't think it seriously it's a wild and fun ass ride.
Agree its just your usual twisted rance you can see in western series heck domestic girlfriend is tame in comparison IMO.
Sengoku Youko
talentless nana (7.2 on MAL)
it's sooo underrated imo
Seconding it. Just go in blind and enjoy it.
Desperately needs more seasons though. Without that it's basically just a cool, but underexplored premise.
Absolutely phenomenal, the anime was ok but the manga is so damn good
It's only fault was to get broadcasted on among us peak popularity, which one would think that it made people watch it but instead turned them away because "it's just anime amogus lmao"
I have terrible taste. Low rated ones do it most for me.
Ratings are extremely biased and often hardly related to quality.
Bro there’s no shame in liking low rated shows. As long as you enjoy them who cares what other people think.
Agreed. Having extremely low expectations means I get to enjoy most everything I watch.
Gamers! Boggles my mind that it's at 6.8 when it's one of the funniest anime I've ever seen.
The Executioner and Her Way of Life.
Was Review bombed because of what they did on the first episode. Solid show, though.
Nagatoro 7.2 on mal
Honestly one of my favorite animes ever. An I don't watch only rom coms
The initial bullying was ugly, but once that’s done it’s one of my favorites.
It feels somewhat like a discount Kaguya Sama to me, but i enjoyed it greatly nevertheless.
I actually look forward to watching an anime that has a 6 on MAL because to me that means it's likely really nice and isn't for anybody, plus I enjoy ecchi harem comedies and those rarely got higher than a 7. I watched Hensuki not too long ago which is sitting at a 6.49 and that was a lot of fun

The manga was more so, but was also more aggressively yuri.
I just looked at my list and realized there's more than 20 anime under 70% that I REALLY liked, so I'm just gonna mention 5 that stood out:
Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta?/And you thought there is never a girl online? - 63% - I know it was nothing special, but I'm a sucker for this type of trash and I loved every moment of it!
Domestic na Kanojo/Domestic Girlfriend 64% - Again, I know it's trash, but it's my kind of trash.
Kamisama ni Natta Hi/The Day I Became a God - 65% - I get why people didn't like it, they kinda messed things up towards the end, but I loved it and cried like the little bitch that I am, honestly don't even consider this trash and I don't think it should be anywhere near this low.
Happy Sugar Life - 65% - I had no idea the score was so low, wouldn't call it trash either.
Zero no Tsukaima - 67% - This is my guilty pleasure anime, absolutely love it! Also had no idea it was scored so low, this is peak harem trash!
Ixion Saga DT - 67% - Was this the first Isekai parody? Isekai wasn't even popular yet! It probably didn't age very well but it was hilarious. At least 10 years ago me thought so.
Honestly I found netoge to be pretty interesting/different from the others. It has some weirdness but its really cute. Most of the time
Houbunsha my beloved:
Comic Girls (7.38)
Yuyushiki (7.37)
Slow Loop (7.27)
Blend S (7.26)
Urara Meirochou (7.14)
Slow start (7.04)
Anne Happy (6.98)
Are all great or at least better than average cute girls doing cute things shows.
I think "How Heavy Are The Dumbbells You Lift?" deserves more than a 7.24 rating.
It's really funny and actually seems pretty educational for people like me that don't know a whole lot about exercising. It's hard to watch it without wanting to work out! I highly recommend it to anyone that wants a little extra motivation to be active. (And if you're a Kaguya-sama fan, this show has the same whacky narrator from the English dub)
Happy Sugar Life, Stepmoms Daughter is My Ex, Renai Flops, Oreshura, Spy Kyoushitsu, Liar Liar, The Day I Became A God
School Days, its currently rated at 5 but i gave it a 8 because of the yandere/bad end.
Honestly I love to see School days as a cautionary tale. Harems aren’t realistic when applied to modern real life, and the anime feels like it really wanted to showcase that with the bad end. Also I’ve met men like the MC, not nearly as careless as Makoto, but definitely FckBoys that think they can have a “roster” with no fcks about how anyone else feels, even with being partnered.
I had a lot of fun with that one
School Days is great. A solid 9 out of 10 for me.
For me it's Happy Sugar Life, don't know why thus masterpieces is rated less than 7, although I don't mind it, it's a hidden gem anyways.
Godzila S.P. - 6.68 on MAL and criminally underrated. I don't know physics but the screenwriter has an sctual Ph.D. in theoretical physics, and somehow told a compelling Godzilla story with the science of quantum physics instead of something like biology. I loved watching it and I'm surprised it didn't even break a 7!
I loved .hack//sign, ninja slayer from animation, punchline, concrete revolutio, cassette no shouzou, neo ranga, school days, wooser no sono higurashi, samurai flamenco, koufuku graffiti, rolling girls, to be hero, gokudolls, 16bit sensation, snack basue, buttobi cpu, alien 9, garzeys wing (only the dub), Warau hyouteki, soratobu yuureisen, dallos, lily c.a.t., junk boy, Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san, Turning Girls, Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu LOVE!, Okusama ga Seitokaichou!, Hacka Doll The Animation, and mayoiga.
Sorry for the long list, these are shows I have a 9, 8, or 7 that has <7 on MAL.
This season. Grandma and Grandpa grown young again.
A couple years back. Skeleton Knight. Skeleton Bro doing skeleton things with his homies.
Even further back. Mug Cup. Surprisingly depth on what it means to create something and the failures and rejections that come with it. And what it means to move on. Contemplative without being too ham fisted and in your face.
Renai flops/Love flops is at 6.7 on myanimelist.
None of my friends who watched it gave it under 8.5
My guess for the low score is that those would would like it best dropped it early (or didn't give it a chance) and those who prefer plain standard harem ecchi comedy disliked the later parts. Need to notice the early hints that things are off and wait for the twist.
I enjoyed watching the show weekly and speculating on what was going on. But the ending... [ending spoiler]
The ending brought my score down from a possible 9/10 to a 6/10. but its probably my fault for having my expectations too high for an ecchi harem made by studio Passione.
Renai Flops is a masterpiece and nobody will convince me otherwise.
Genuinely up there for my favorite anime ever
made me cry so bad it was a genuine 10/10
I fucking loved Yuri is My Job (6.73 on MAL)
I love me some toxic, complicated, yuri where you just want the best for everyone, but personal hangups keep getting in the way.
Citrus (6.44)
Yuri is my Job (6.73)
Maria Holic (7.01)
Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne (7.26)
Baka to Test. Idk I just found it really funny and tropey, didn't expect it to be around a low 7.
Watashi wa motenai no wo dou kangaetemo omaera wa warui
Absolute masterpiece 10/10. Can't believe it only has 6.99 on mal. Looks like they couldn't handle the cringe and awkwardness lol. Komi-san is expectations. This one is reality.
Haven't watched the second season yet but I liked the first season very much.
Monster musume no iru nichijou
Probably one of the best harem anime.
Hilarious. A girl becomes a guy's right arm. Interesting, right?
I think back then I really liked "Servant x Service" Has anyone watched this anime?
The Day I Became a God (Kamisama ni Natta Hi). Rated 6.8 at MAL.
It was one of the first anime I've seen and my biggest complain would be, that twist in the story was kinda sudden and maybe 2 or 3 additional episodes, to further develop the characters, would have been nice. But that's the normal struggle with how seasons work I guess.
I wish it had more episodes, but I loved it! Also has one of my favorite Openings!
At this point, I think people hate anything by Key because it’s from Key. I liked this one a lot. Just like I liked Charlotte and Angel Beats from the same crew.
Shinkalion Change The World has a 48% on Anilist but I have it at an easy 9/10 so far
Tonbo sits at 59% which might be an even bigger piss take seeing how fun it is
Saving 80k Gold is at 68% while in my opinion it adapted and improved what was already a great novel. It is what an adaptation and then dub should be. One of my few 10s
The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter is a riot and has a well-developed harem, I put it at 9.1 (to differentiate it from the 9s I have on Anilist as it's better than them) but it's only 60% on Anilist!
I don’t use MAL and stopped taking MAL seriously after the Interspecies Reviewer fiasco.
But to the question, the Executioner and Her Way Of Life. Last I asked my friend who uses MAL, he said it was sitting around 6.75 which isn’t bad but consider how it was review bombed by the dumbest reason might as well be.
Which is funny because on ANN that show scores 7.8.
Wait what happened with interspecies reviewers?
I'm wondering the same thing. But from what I can find on Google, it seems like it was positively review bombed on MAL after the show was abruptly removed from Funimation streaming service. And other streaming services also removed it.
A lot of people were mad about that, and it seems that MAL got bombed with positive reviews to the point where Ishuzoku Reviewers ranked above Steins Gate.
I don't know what happened after that, but I think this was the drama
Pretty much. MAL tweaked their scoring algorithm to account for such review bombing IIRC, but the bluster died off quick.
That said, the show is hilarious. Recommended if you want a guilty pleasure.
I wish anime websites like mal and AL would lock reviewing until a show is finished. People give out tens when the shows don't even come out. And people give out zeros.
A lot of small OVAs and more obscure classics like Phantom Quest Corp, Devil Hunter Yohko and Roujin Z. Fittingly, the currently airing Astro Note is also down there, and I’d consider that a crime against anime.
Speed Grapher was pretty good.
Aragne Sign of Vermilion (5.05) and Feast of Amrita (5.35). It's rough in some places because one guy did all of it, but it's the only case out there of pure anime horror that doesn't rely on net rumors or youkai.
6 to 7 isn't a low rating I would say they're ok to good anime, low would be 5 and below.
By mal users standards it's pretty low.
Mal users tend to be generous when marking anime, I guess ?
Gridman
Gleipnir was enjoyable.
Yeah I liked it. It's clear it needed a longer adaptation, but what is there was both interesting and fun to watch, with at least one memorable character. I rated it as a 6/10, but it's a high 6.
Agreed it was fun to watch and thrilling too!
any news regarding next season?
Happy Sugar Life
Mars Red
Babylon and Kado the right answer. These two got hated on mainly because of their end, but I liked those, so both are at least 9/10 for me despite scoring 6.x/10 on Anilist.
Also Planet with, an anime about the guy who has to become the villain against the team of superheroes in mechas saving the world. It goes somewhere, it does it well... But somehow got very little attention and a 6.x/10 too.
Finally, a place to talk about my favorite trash:
Tsukoyumi: Moon Phase is currently sitting at a 6.95 on MAL, but I am a big fan of it. It's a relatively early work of Studio Shaft and the legendary Akiyuki Shinbo, well known for early works on Yu Yu Hakusho and the modern Monogatari series.
Moon Phase follows the story of Kouhei Morioka, a photographer from a family of shinto sorcerers with no spiritual capacity of his own, and Hazuki, a loli vampire princess woth a sinister alter ego who desperately wants to find her long lost mother and escape the control of her evil family. When shooting on site at a castle in Germany, Hazuki bites Kouhei, an act which would normally make him into thrall, but seemingly has no affect on him, starting a strange story of found family and romance.
It's definitely aged. A lot of tropes and jokes (especially the loli siscon stuff) just wouldn't fly for a modern audience's sensibilities. But if you can look past that, Moon Phase is a compelling story of growth and found family that I've always found endearing. The side characters all feel very well thought out, and you really start to root for the main two characters to get along and work out their traumas together.
Another really funny thing about it is that it feels like a Monogatari alpha, almost. Its studio and directorial credits aren't the only similarities: Kouhei and Hazuki are voiced by the same duo that voices Araragi and Senjougahara, and their chemistry is evident even this early on. And for those who have seen Monogatari, a supernatural drama focused on overcoming personal character flaws and developing meaningful relationships will sound like a very familiar concept.
It doesn't end in a particularly satisfying way, as was the fate of many of these manga-based anime from the early 2000s. Some things don't get totally resolved. It takes its time meandering and allowing the characters to grow, slowly and naturally. I dont think I actually have it rated higher than a 6 ln MAL myself. It's a weird ride that I always like recommending in threads like these, because even if it's not amazing or a masterpiece in an objective way, it was compelling to me personally.
I loved the shows when I saw them. Just plain goofy hilarious hi-jinks. Shocked when I saw on MAL that they're rated around the 6 and 7 range. What am I missing? All shows are primarily meant to deliver laughs. Mission accomplished. Almost every single ep in all these shows delivered LOL moments on multiple occasions. On top of that they had fun animation and stellar voice acting. What more could you ask for?
People say it's just a knock-off Evangelion. But all I care about is whether a show is entertaining or not. And I enjoyed this very much with the badass mecha designs and cool atmosphere. Very underrated imo.
This one I can kinda understand why it's not rated higher. Many people were disappointed with the ending. I had no idea where it was going and after it was over I definitely did not see it going that way. And I can't say I liked that it ended that way. But regardless, the ending moved me to tears. That earns it high marks in my book. Overall it's rated a low 7 on MAL but I'd give it a 9/10.
Ghost Stories Dub, and Sergeant Frog 🤪🤪🤪
Drop out idol fruit tart.
Megalobox 7.8 is a 9 to a 10
Megalobox is incredible and so is TMS as a studio. I wish we had more anime that looked like that.
Umineko no Naku koroni
The manga and VN were better. The pacing of the anime is whack, the character designs suck, and they slowed down the OST by 40% for some unknown reason.
Guilty crown keeps getting talked as " bad " on this sub but its pretty good anime . Banger OST, banger fights interesting characters i liked it . Ofc there are things that could have been better, more detailed but its a really good one
Listeners
Back Arrow 😭 I can convince no one to watch this show but I love it so much... such a good sci-fi show with so many, SO many interesting and well written characters, and the craziest plot, AND a satisfying ending which not many original animes are lucky enough to get
Green green
Villainess Level 99, everyone agrees (or at least they should) that the main character was amazing, but a lot of people were put off by the changes they made from the LN and the animation. The animation was hilarious imo and added to the vibe of the show, I can understand why people were disappointed with the changes though. But I still thought it was a super funny show and I love Yumiella’s dynamics with the other characters
school days
With a MAL rating of 6.7, Granbelm is one of the most underrated shows I would say. It's a magical girl mecha anime that stands out for its stunning visuals, mature themes about grief & loss, and unique character relationships.
Sengoku youko (rated 7.01) Definitely deserves above 8
I loved the Fireworks movie. Sure it doesn't have the best writing, but I had a fun time watching it. Great soundtrack, beautiful animation, studio Shaft head tilts, and I was pretty much just vibing with the film. Not everything has to be a masterpiece for me to enjoy it.
Under Ninja was worth to watch
Kurokami The Animation. Great dub, solid action, an interesting concept, and a killer first episode make it so great!
Kiss Him, Not Me - 6.95
And
Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro - 7.25
TIL Grimoire of zero is only 7.07 on MAL :( great watch, and I would also recommend its sequel, the dawn of a witch (6.4)
Stigma of the wind
Gleipnir
Bleach, I watched it and liked it, then I was surprised at how much people spoke badly about it or didn't like it.
Gantz
Concrete Revolutio. I thought it was rather bold of them to acknowledge the existence of Unit 731 in anime. It was ultimately a mess but it was a fun mess regardless.
What are you after, what have you seen? Are enjoyable animes you know why they got a low rating still ok?
Off the top of my head:
Aho Girl - comedy, like a car crash. You want to look away and be above it, but somehow you click next episode.
Akame ga Kill - Gory shounen with fan service, but, without going into too much detail, the creators had enough balls to skip plot armor for the most part.
Another - mystery with gore
Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor - Wants to be an action shounen, ends up being more of a comedy. Still funny. A lot of fan service.
Log Horizon - If you aren't totally burned out by the unending flood of isekai, this is another videogame isekai like SOA
Kakegurui - gambling shounen with fan service
Flowers of Evil, mind fuck of an anime that got bogged down in the ratings because of the animation style, which I thought was perfectly fitting in most of the scenes.
Babylon (6.75 on MAL)
I was really invested in the philosophical questions presented in the show, but apparently people didn't like it.
The show nosedived after ep 7, which was a 10/10 episode for me.
darker than black
Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie has a 6.93 on MAL but I gave it an 8. I really enjoyed it and thought the main pair was really cute. I'll never understand why it got so much hate despite being similiar to a bunch of shows that have gotten more acclaim and positivity (Nagatoro and Horimiya come to mind).
Akuma Drive has a 7.59 (I know it's on the higher 7's) and I gave it a 9. It has incredible animation and ambiance and I thought it was a relatively unique seasonal anime at the time. Also really enjoyed the characters, yeah they kinda were made to fit into molds but I think for a 12 episode anime they still did a great job with the emotional fights, especially towards the end.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (7.82)
Not as low as the post recommends but I still feel like this show is massively underrated for how good it is.
6 to 7 on MAL is where all the good stuff is, as far as niche viewing goes!
