Bugs over May Long Weekend?

Hello!

Have a tent site booked in Mikisew and was wondering how the bug situation is. My partner is a mosquito magnet and she is worried about black flies as well.

Is it unbearable? Do able with spray/thermacell?

Wondering if anyone has been in the area recently

Tip for May to July. Prepare for the worst.

Would be unbearable for me without a bug shelter and a bug suit. I don't think thermacell and spray would be enough.

Can't speak to this year or Mikisew but last year this time I was in Algonquin and it was brutal.

I live not far from Mikisew and the black flies are thick and biting now, prepare accordingly

The black flies are out in full force, doesn't matter if you are a bug magnet or not. I would consider a bug jacket mandatory

Is it a morning/evening problem or a all day?

If we are at the beach/water can we expect to be left alone for the most part?

I assumed a tent/bug shelter/evening fire would deal with most of them

Fire won't do much, a strong wind is the only thing that will keep them away.

All day. They almost always go away at night though.

All day, on the water, at the site, everywhere. A high wind will keep them down

It will be unbearable even lathered with deet. I’d be more worried about black flies, personally.

It’s not complicated: It’s Ontario, in a forest, in the middle of spring. It will be buggy.

Will it be “Unbearable” or “do able [sic]”? well that’s dependent on the person.

I'm heading into the backcountry as I do every May long weekend. The bugs will be very bad this year because it has been a warm spring.

Bug suit is the most important thing I packed and I hate wearing it.

This will be fun. I’m padding and camping on Gareairly Lake! If the bugs are biting, the fish are too!

I was up this weekend and they didn't seem bad. But maybe I'm just not bothered by them 🤷‍♂️

Was up in Kawartha on weekend and some type of buy was biting not mosquito or black fly but I think it's going start getting worse here on out until late July.

I was at the western uplands all of last week. They were starting. 2 of the 7 days we wore bug suits all day. If you want my opinion, You are in for a nasty time. Sorry if I sound like I’m trying to discourage you, but you asked and I’m telling !

What you want is a eureka no bug zone, currently on sale everywhere

Perhaps But that’s camping per say I hike, so the bug suit is pretty much 24/7

You will need a bug shelter such as the Eureka no bug zone. Just got back today from 4 days in the Backcountry, they're getting bad
