Anyone else wonder how Will would've turned out had Amanda been able to adopt him?
SpoilerQuestionThat’s a great point! I like this theory. Looking and keeping tabs would have emotionally killed her.
In the book the rich brother of one of the pros and his wife would NOT let Will get adopted
YESSS. And I get so sad because how much she obviously cares about him & how it must've hurt seeing how his trauma from foster care affected him 😭
If that was possible, he would have likely had other issues growing up in GA at that time period in a single mom mixed race home. He wouldn't have been BFF's with Angie or gone through any of the trauma that shaped him. It's likely he would have had gotten help with his dyslexia and learned to read instead of suffering with it well into his adult years. Additionally, it would have likely changed Amanda as she would have had someone depending on her and she probably would have realized her work put her in more danger than she would have been comfortable with. I would imagine Angie's life would have been even worse without Will there. She might not even be alive.
Yes, I mean non-cannon to the show/books. of course everything would be better for Will and he would be a totally different person. The main premise of the show and who Will is (and Angie) wouldn’t be the same. Amanda wouldn’t be the same either!
I’m sure they would have had many challenges together but of course they would be together … and it would have made all the difference for Will.
Finding out later in life what happened to Will must have been heartbreaking for Amanda! A person who was guarded with her heart and emotions anyway, finding out he was abused and she didn’t protect him like she thought she did… total gut punch for her.
At least she has tried ever since to make up for it… getting him in GBI etc. It’s a tragic story at its base, for everyone.
In the books they explain that she was a single woman and at that time it wasn’t allowed.
It's what was stated in the last episode of S1 as well.
I know that. That's not what I asked.
When Will was not adopted by the family that was supposed to adopt him I wonder why Amanda didn’t find out. I realize she was not a blood relative and the “home” was probably under no legal obligation to let her know however if she loved Will as much as she says she did I find it hard to believe she never checked on him. Sorry for the run on sentence. Yes, the story wouldn’t be as interesting if Will had had a normal childhood. Just a thought.
I’ve been thinking about this too. She’s a cop, she has access to records, she could have followed him all his life, checked up on him, been a “family friend”… why/how could she completely disappear from his life? It just makes no sense!
Based on who Amanda is, I think it would have been too hard for her to check on the baby she had "lost." She's so hard and guarded; and, for good reason. It also appears that she had very little emotional support. Her father was definitely not going to support her adopting a dead prostitute's baby. Look at what happened to her after the attack in last week's episode.
Oops!! I’m not caught up, but no worries, this is helpful to know. Yes, you’re very right. No support, dated a closeted gay man for 10 years, she was going through the wringer herself.
I wondered that as well.
Question: is Will just dyslexic or is he possibly on the spectrum? His attention to detail, certain social cue interactions, his preference for suits. I'm not positive but I was just wondering.
I feel like they wrote him this way in the show, but in the book he’s definitely not.
The easiest answer is Amanda didn’t look because it was too painful for her. Hindsight is 20/20 and she assumed he was adopted. It would have been painful for her to watch him from a distance. So she didn’t watch.
