Would like to hear any bands you all like from the old dominion. Any stories too!
I saw him once on 95, around the mixing bowl, in a blue M5. Wow, many years ago
I sat next to him at the DMV one time in the 00s, totally down to earth and we had a whole conversation while we waited!
Rumor has it that as a teen his band (Dain Bramage) played a high school prom in Arlington.
And the FF song Weenie Beenie is about an actual hot dog stand in Shirlington.
I had no idea they had a song called Weenie Beenie. I used to live on that side of Arlington and when giving friends directions to visit it normally included “make a left at the weenie beenie”.
That’s nuts.
I think this is the place right off four mile road? Has amazing reviews but doesn't look the best today.
"I believe..."
Dannnnng still remember that song from the Pokémon first movie
I love Dave's Killer Bread! I don't think it's affiliated with Grohl though.
Dave’s Killer Bread is owned and operated out of Portland, OR. Their thing is that Dave is an ex-con and they employ ex-cons to help them transition back into productive society.
You might want to Google that one
Keller Williams
Love those tweakers
The ones down by the speaker?
Carbon Leaf is underrated
Came here to post Carbon Leaf. Will now upvote all Carbon Leaf
Very much so.
Had to scroll far too long for this. I love Carbon Leaf
For sure. We went to one of their shows in C’ville a few weeks back and it was great!
Came here to add Carbon Leaf and see lots of you already have!
Apparently Bad Omens is from Richmond.
Woah really?? Those guys are awesome
2 of them are. The singer and the guitar player. The guitar player Nick is also a tattooer, who apprenticed under my best friend
A forgotten 90s band, Seven Mary Three, formed in Williamsburg.
Ahh I love them
There is only one answer.
GWAR
And Dave Grohl
Dave GWAR.
City of Caterpillar or Pig Destroyer, anyone?
Love City of Caterpillar
Lamb of God
Municipal waste too
These are all answers that are not the only answer.. they are not GWAR.
Carbonleaf
Came here to say that, went to college with them. Great band, great guys!
I was never big into them. Certainly heard of them but knew nothing about them until I moved to Richmond in '05 and learned they were local.
My 11 year old son is really into them, so I've been listening to their entire catalog. They are a great band, and once again, I show up late to the party.
Not too late. They still tour, always a big RVA show near the end of the year. Family friendly crowd too, take your kid.
They also did a drive in show during Covid, it was awesome to break up the boredom that summer.
J. Roddy Walston and the Business. And obviously GWAR
Municipal Waste
Car Seat Headrest
The only other one I can think of off the top of my head other than those mentioned is maybe…Southern Culture on Skids? I think two of the 3 members are from Virginia. I don’t think they are widely well known but they had a moderate hit back in the 90’s with Camel Walk.
Baby—would you eat that there snack cracker in your special outfit for me, please?
SCOTS is still touring. Saw them play last year.
Yep! I’ve seen them three times over the last year and half. They’re a fun band and it seems like they tour constantly. I know their songs are kind of niche but I always loved them and thought they should be a bigger band than they are.
Fugazi, The Nighthawks (DC & Va), Eddie from Ohio, The Legwarmers, Kat and the Travelers, Old Crow Medicine Show
Finally some Fu and not Foo
Ed fROMOHIO? Like in fIREHOSE? I thought he was yanno from Ohio?
Avail
Thank you. Why is this not at the top…?
Lamb of God
Hell yeah
This is the answer
I was a huge Emmet Swimming fan in high school
Same, but in college.
How about Pharrell and the Neptunes?
And N.E.R.D! My favorite Pharrell project.
🔥🔥🔥
Off the top of my head:
Awareness Art Ensemble, Bruce Hornsby and the Range, Cashmere Jungle Lords, Cracker, The Dads, Dave Matthews Band, Eddie From Ohio, Everything, GWAR, House of Freaks, Seven Mary Three.
From Virginia: Stewart Copeland, Robert Cray, Steve Earle, Dave Grohl, Mojo Nixon.
Surprised you didn’t have fighting gravity on that list
Used to go to all their shows back in the day.
Formerly Boy Oh Boy. Used to love them and The Eccentrics (Xntrix) back in the day.
Thank you! I've been wracking my brain trying to remember their name. They used to play around me when i was in college. Fond memories
You'd be amazed what's not on the top of my head that early in the morning.
I did not know that Stewart Copeland is from Virginia. Learn something every day.
He was born in Alexandria. His father worked for the CIA. Really.
Jim Morrison lived in Alexandria for a few years.
I remember that second part from when he appeared on the Grand Tour.
Everything was a fantastic college band who got their start attending JMU, and hitting lots of the popular schools and beach towns in the mid-Atlantic back in the 90s. They had their 15 minutes of fame with a song on the Waterboy soundtrack. A variation of the original band is still performing to this day.
Don't forget Cass Elliot from the Mamas & the Papas. She was born in Baltimore, but was raised in Alexandria. Also Ella Fitzgerald, Missy Elliott, Timbaland, and Pharrell Williams all from the Hampton Roads area. Plus Pasty Cline from Winchester, and Jason Marz and Aimee Mann from Richmond. And there are sooooooooo many more bands and musicians from VA and many who are fanatic.
Pusha T from the 757 too
Timbaland and Missy Elliott
In that same vein Chris brown (cancelled), Pharrell, Pusha T/Clipse, D.R.A.M, Goldlink,Lil Ugly Mane, Sickboyrari/Black Kray (more underground)
Finally!
Rock?
Check out WHRV's Out of the Box! Host Paul Shugrue brings the greater Hampton Roads area all new music every week, including a wide selection of local artists. Tune in or listen online!
Who remembers the Pay McGee Band, with their song Rebecca? 🤷🏻♀️Their drummer was my neighbor growing up. Straight from the RVA ☺️
We had them play parties during college, great guys. Pat has been playing some locally.
Yeah, all really great guys! Seems like a lifetime ago and yesterday all at the same time. Before Chris passed away, he would always get me into the shows and just tell me to wear something cute 😂🤦🏻♀️
Dave Mathews Band
Darkest Hour
Ehn…when they came out they were from MD, I think they moved to DC when they got signed…maybe
Almost. They’re originally from Fairfax, Virginia.
J. Roddy Walston & the Business, Carbon Leaf, LUCY DACUS. HELLO.
Boygenius!
Carter Family
Car Seat Headrest, Lucy Dacus
Dave Matthew’s Band- though he wasn’t born and raised in VA, he started in VA and played around the State before being famous.
DMB is for sure a VA band. I don’t know how you could call them anything else. Straight out of the VA college party scene, of course particularly UVA. They recorded at one of the studios (Flat Five Studios) here where I live when they were putting Remember Two Things together. The company I work for did quite a bit of production work with them too. I know people who worked on his crew from the start of it all. Definitely have to be considered in the top bands to start in Virginia category.
Dating myself but I remember getting a bootleg tape of them while I was in high school…. then i was hooked.
Oh yeah there were tons of tapes going around. I was a big tape trader as I was into the Dead, Phish, moe., etc. Had several Dave shows though, mostly from around VA like The Flood Zone in Richmond or Trax in C-ville. Dave did a big outdoor show at the stadium here in Roanoke in I think 1998. It was rainy but so much fun as a teenager. I’ll say it…those were the days 😂
They were a house band at the Bird In Hand in Richmond in the early 90s. Every Wednesday. It was like $5 cover.
They were a house band at the
Bird In HandFlood Zone in Richmond in the early 90s
Avail, Strike Anywhere, Ann Beretta, Inquisition, Celebration Summer, American Television, Talk Me Off
YES. Good ol’ Richmond c. 1990’s-early 2000’s punk!!
Illiterate Light is currently my fave. I’m a big fan of WNRN out of Charlottesville and they place a lot of emphasis on playing VA bands.
Not really a rock band but SOJA !!
Four Walls Falling
Lots of good hardcore/screamo VA bands from that era too like Sleepytime Trio, Four Hundred Years, Engine Down etc.
I still listen to Sleepytime Trio and Engine Down on the regular. Glad to see them mentioned!
Virginia coalition! So underrated, love their old stuff! :)
Apparently some of the former members are still in Alexandria will do impromptu jams at friends’ bbqs and such.
Richmond is ground zero for some killer new hardcore! One of the best scenes in the country
Got any suggestions on new Richmond hardcore to check out?
Downfall, Killing Pace, Torment, Bracewar, Naysayer, Mutually Assured Destruction, Division of Mind, all are east coast legends. I live in Florida now but people think I’m cool there because I “come from a city with real hardcore” lol
SLAAT
Baroness is originally from Virginia, I believe.
their mother was my piano teacher growing up in Lex. She used to say that she has this same gene mutation as Mozart and passed it on to her sons (The Harveys).
Fugazi
Denali
Dude.. yes! I was at their last show and I think I’m will forever have a crush on Mara Davis..
You and every other person who saw them live hahaha
Emmet Swimming, Dave Matthews Band, Carbon Leaf, Everything
Inter Arma.
FINALLY
49 Winchester! They are amazing. Definitely southern rock. Depending on song sometimes it sounds more classic rock, sometimes more country. But they are awesome!
They rock..
Named for their actual address in Castlewood near the Wise/Russell County Line. (Russell County Line being their most popular song.)
pentagram, gwar, municipal waste, lamb of god got to take the cake for me
The front man to The Head and the Heart is my upstairs neighbor
Tell him it’s good stuff!
Everything. https://thebandeverything.com. Not really “rock” though, more like funk, ska, go-go. Also Fighting Gravity out of Richmond for Ska.
Bio Ritmo. Legendary salsa band.
Good answer! Not enough love to the Richmond Latin/jazz scene
RIP to the People’s Blue’s of Richmond (PBR)
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Pavement or The Silver Jews
Not sure if it’s what you’re looking for but I love me some Fighting Jamesons.
Soja , more reggae than rock but still
Foo Fighters is top of the list.
Foo Fighters are not from VA, Dave Grohl is.
Clarence clemmons.. victor wooten and his brothers..so many more esp from hampton roads. Not bands. I know but still deserving of mention. To me anyway
Robbin Thompson-“Sweet Virginia Breeze” and “Candy Apple Red”. Never really got the props he deserved. Read a story about him a few years back-he joined a band called Steel Mill years ago. They were from up north and played a lot of gigs in the Fan District back in the day. When it was time for them to head back, they invited Thompson to come with them. Robbin declined; he didn’t want to leave Richmond, and he didn’t think this kid from Jersey named Springsteen would ever amount to much.
Haven't seen anyone mention Agents of Good Roots or The Rentals yet.
AGR were set to become "the next Dave Matthews Band" at one point.
The Rentals are basically just Matt Sharp (the original bassist for Weezer) who lived in Northern Virginia from when he was one until he moved to San Diego at 16.
Agents!!
GWAR, Lamb of God, Missy Elliot, Pharell, Chris Brown, Victor Wooten, Wayne Newton, Jason Mraz, DMB, I'm sure I'm missing a bunch

John D Cronise, lead singer for The Swotd, is from Roanoke
Bellweather is a really promising indie/shoegaze band from Vienna. Windhand is from Richmond and they do highly atmospheric doom/stoner metal.
I didn't see anyone post Wild Nothing on here yet. Really good.
I'm surprised no one's said Dave Matthews Band yet. They were formed in Charlottesville.
Check out dropping julia! They have an awesome funky sound and write original music.
My Enemies & I
What a terrible band they were.
Gwar
Battlemaster
Folk Soul Revival
Car seat headrest
Got some really old ones from Roanoke. Early 90’s there was Deaf Child, then in the eighties there was Fast Passion. Loved goin to the Iroquois club in downtown.
Egads, The Iroquois. Haven’t thought of that place in a minute or two. I started going there when it was still the King’s Inn. Dating myself, I know. Took a girl there on our first date after a movie at the Jefferson. Three years later we were married. Still together and going strong after 49 years all told. You just brought back a lot of good memories. Bless you.
while not my favorite, I will never forget the fact that Alabama Thunderpussy is indeed from Virginia
Nick Cordle is a Virginian guitarist that played on Arch Enemy's War Eternal album.
Daughtry

Frodus
Bruce Hornsby is from Williamsburg/Yorktown
David Matthews and his Band
The Isotopes
Red hot chilli peppers
Fungazi
Family Tree
Members of The Speaks are mostly from virginia i think
Freedom Hawk. If you’re unfamiliar you should check em out
More folk than rock, but John McCutcheon is a treasure.
Rattlemouth
Wallpaper has to be my favorite in the diy scene around here
Happy Flowers
Same Time Tomorrow is a really great up and coming rock band from Hampton Roads. Give them a listen on Spotify!
John D Cronise, lead singer for The Swotd, is from Roanoke
Suzy Saxon and the Anglos
Not a band, but Scott Travis (longtime Judas Priest drummer) is from Norfolk. He was in Racer X before that. Ridiculously good drummer.
Dave Grohl, drummer for Nirvana and leader of Foo Fighters, is perhaps the best known and most respected rock musician today. He also was raised in North Springfield, Virginia and considers it his home turf. But he's not a band, right? Fair enough. I always loved Blessed Union of Souls
