I’m 100% P&T. Admittedly it did take a long time to get approved for CHAMPVA but boy was it worth it.

The past couple years, the doctors have been trying to figure out what was wrong with my wife’s health. They eventually did, one month before I got approved for CHAMPVA. I’m not a religious man in any sense of the word (I don’t see how anybody could be after what we went through/saw/did in Iraq) but that was a goddamn miracle. My wife’s medicine costs $38,000 per month for one shot. She’ll be on it likely forever. Unless by some miracle her disease, Adult Onset Stills Disease, goes into remission, the Docs say it’s not likely though because how late we identified it.

We had commercial insurance before CHAMPVA because we’re self employed. The commercial insurance was going to cover $150 of the $38,000 because “that’s what we cover for prescriptions” I asked for it to be delivered to the hospital, so it would be considered a hospital med, but they denied that request.

The first month was covered, less $3,000 from a co-pay card from the medicine maker, but then that card was all used up. CHAMPVA took over the next month covering it 100%.

So strange how getting injured physically and mentally can turn into my spouses life saving medicine.
