Excessive battery consumption in CA

2022 RWD

Anyone experiencing terrible range loss this summer? Currently 103F here in California and I have literally just been bleeding miles. I’m typically anywhere between 30-50 miles consumed more than projected, but today specifically wh/mi has skyrocketed to 830!! My typical is 248wh/mi… I keep temp at 72F and on auto(low fan setting)

Any thoughts ?

….Of course not… was just wondering if anyone was expecting this much of projected range loss. I have 86 miles of range in picture, lost 6 while taking few minutes to post this and a projected range of 20-30 less than current battery level.

Yeh. I’ve seen upwards of 7 kw draw from my wall connector when cooling my car off from the Floridian sun.

It takes a lot of power to cool the car down. Unfortunately that power is “miles”

I’m in the OC so running ac now. Big drop in efficiency to 300 Wh/mi from 240 all winter but never used the heater. I’m also running the ac at 75

Check your brakes.

Set AC to 75, tires to 42 psi, tint windows with ceramic film and put battery to %. Problem solved.

Your wh/mile looks fine from the graph. Going up hills will temporarily spike consumption

Think of the cost difference you pay in CA from winter to summer. That gives you an idea of how much electricity air conditioners draw.

Having similar issues in Texas. I can alleviate it some by starting the climate 10-15 minutes before I leave when I’m plugged in and setting it to auto when I’m driving.

I’m currently on the fence about my wife’s car as well, she averages about 110-140 every charge. AC ruins these cars range, dug up some research and census is you get best range spring time when it’s 60-70s because battery temp is happy and minimal ac and heat is used. Seriously considering getting my wife a new accord hybrid. I’ve been told to dial back the ac usage, y’all crazy for having such mentality. Let me raise the ac temp a bit to get better range seems contradicting to modern essential needs. My wife’s a rwd too here’s her last charge lol 15bucks for 100 miles is just silly. Gas near me is the cheapest in Cali at 3.99, if you do the math comes to around 25mpg.

AC has the same effect on ICE vehicles as well. Are you unable to charge your wife’s car at home?

This is what people don't understand. If ICE cars gave you the same detailed information, these people would lose their minds! That's why ICE cars just have that silly guage that doesn't start moving until you've used a quarter tank of gas.

I have a level 1 charger that does 3-5m an hour. Wife just charges it at our local Walmart that has about 20 Tesla superchargers. Told my wife I’d get her a level 2 that would charge much faster at home, showed her the price and said let’s not fully commit to this just yet.

My wife just paid a local electrician a few hundred bucks to install a 240v outlet in our home and now my car is charged 7x faster than before. It’s well worth it. I don’t have range anxiety anymore.

It’s still slower than a supercharger but it charges when I don’t need it so it doesn’t feel inconvenient.
