A couple of these are good advice but “volunteer” and “hire someone” are usually not in the cards for someone making a teacher’s salary.

I understand that, but it’s in bad taste to suggest to teachers to give more time and money to their job search, considering we already spend money out of pocket for our classrooms and often work overtime for shit ass pay. I got a job without doing any of that simply by reading lots of articles, following advice I found that didnt encourage me to spend more money, and improving my cover letter with every application I submitted.
It's bad taste yes, but they're also not looking to hire us. They're actively trying to weed through us.
If you can build those skills without volunteering, awesome! However, it's a viable option for folks as well. There are plenty of tiny NPOs, churches, etc that would love to partner with teachers looking to build skills.
