I'd like to install a tonneau cover but there are so many options that it's a bit overwhelming to choose one. Seems like the Bakflip MX4 is a popular choice however it claims 100% bed access but based on this picture it is not. Also the top panels seem to get dinged easily. Another alternative would be a retractable one and Rough Country sells one for under $1,000. What do you guys think?
Second this - definitely allows access to 90%+ of your bed and doesn't ding as easily as you think. It's one of the best hard folding, flush mount tonneaus on the market. There are cheaper alternatives but the price reflects the quality and is backed by great customer service.
Thank you I appreciate your input. I estimated my percentage by what I saw in the picture, but it's good to know that it's above 90%. Yeah I think $1,000 is a lot for this type of cover.
Trust me they can take a beating mine is absolutely been tore up all over the place. I don't think any cover except maybe a soft one has any option to be able to utilize at 100%.
I’m a fan of the BAK Revolver X4S
I have the revolver, it pretty great. Nearly full bed access and you can still see out of the back window. The little plastic covers on the closing corners need a better design - they can pop off if you’re heavy handed locking it down. But otherwise it’s perfect. I haul dirt bikes, and actually have the front tires cinched against the rolled up cover, it’s tough enough to double as a wheel chock.
Gonna thirds this. Revolver is great minus the mentioned plastic end caps. BUT I’ve had good experience with Bakflip sending me replacements. Also the look of a flat and flushed bed is 🤌
100%!
I have the Peragon and I like it for the reason I can pull it out with relative ease, but even if I leave it in I still have about 95% of my bed accessible. And it's sturdy enough that you could stand on it when it's closed. Check them out I think they have a $1k version.
Cool. I'm checking this one out. Interesting that it doesn't have a canister.
I've had the HDX for about a week. Took me about 2.5 hours to install but I got it for how easy it is to completely remove the panels for full bed access. The HDX also doesn't require a separate key to lock which is nice, and the coating on the panels seems pretty durable. Can't really speak on the other trim models, but mine seems to be high quality.
I just got ahold of someone that had a new truck that didn't want their OEM Tacoma tonneau cover so we swapped and had it on my 18' for years. Things are solid. Might wanna look into those.
More information, I keep a 10mm in my truck at all times so I can easily take it off if I need to randomly. Also read that the backflip is so heavy you need to be standing in the bed to flip it. With this one you can do it one handed from the ground. (Except removing completely obviously..)
My Bakflip is not heavy, very easy to operate with one hand only
Oh! Weird someone would say that then.
I had a bakflip on my Tundra and it was great if you wanted to beat it up, but I fucking hated it! Sure, it’s strong enough to even lay on top of if you’re under 200lbs, but it weighs a ton. You have to be standing in the bed to flip it all the way back because after the first flip it gets too heavy from the side with one arm. Also, someone else mentioned with it all the way up (hauling a bike, furniture, etc.) it blocks the window; well, it also scratches the hell out of the paint on the sides of the window and makes small dents.
It’s not that heavy
The new ones are way thinner. I hated them too for that reason but I can single-handedly flip the current ones all the way back.
The weight isn't that bad on the one for the Tacoma. At least, I've never had to struggle to lift it all the way.
Did your kit come with the foam bumpers? It's supposed to have some of them along the edge to keep it from damaging the truck when resting against the cab.
It did but they wore off after a while
I have the soft top Toyota one. I love it because it’s light, and takes less than 5 mins to remove if need be.
My dad has the Bakflip and he loves it. Me however I use my bed, so I did a roll up one by Tuxedo.
This. If you’re actually using (and no, this is not a pavement princess comment) the bed of the truck, you can’t beat the truxedo roll up. You get 100% of the bed, and it’s flexible - no bent hinges, frozen latch/lock or being knocked out of alignment.
I have been considering this. I have a soft trifold right now and only get access to about 3/4 when I'm trying to put things in. Does that tuxedo easily roll up as tight as it looks in the adverts?
Yes it rolls up very easy. For the price you can’t beat it. You can adjust it as well
Whats the long term durability like on the velcro?
That seems like it would wear out after a few years, if it doesnt get caked up full of shit before then
I’ve had a Truxedo on my ‘18 Tundra CM since new. I had seen a lot of these on other trucks looking pretty ragged out…but I figured WTH I could buy another after a few years and still be ahead. However, it still looks nearly new (Velcro still in good shape) and I am very happy with it! I usually wipe it down with 303 protectant after washing to help maintain it…but I don’t have any need to replace it for some time. I think for something like this it really depends on how well you take care of it.
I wanted quick and complete access to my bed…and didn’t want my back window obstructed at all…which was the reason for choosing this one. Should mention my truck is garaged most of the time and the cover spends 90% of the time unrolled covering the bed.
You’ll have to put in a little effort to keep the Velcro clean (there are cheap little brushes for this) and you have to keep the cover tight if you’re going to drive around with the cover deployed all the time. If you leave it loose and flappy, it will get worse over time. I treat them as a consumable, like ratchet straps and tarps. Run till done and replace as needed.
I also have a roll up truxedo pro x15.
I love it, rolls all the way up without blocking your window, I treat the fabric with the same dwr spray I use on rain jackets and bags. It only drips in the corners some like all covers that sit on top of the rails.
I keep it covered most the time and then roll up for bigger object and when I’m pitching stuff in the bed.
I have the Lomax tri fold tonneau cover and I love it!
Second the Lomax tri fold, it works well and very low profile.
Im saving up for diamondback
you won’t be disappointed.
If not set on buying new make sure to check local online marketplaces. Grabbed a smooth textured one with front runner rails for $950 earlier this year, absolutely love having it.
But doesn't that split the bed in half? It looks awesome and heavy duty, but functionality seems like a pain.
Love mine. Super simple full usability and simple to remove and put back on if needed
I plan to get a diamond back because the split up bed will only be an issue for large loads, which I rarely haul other than kayaks, which can also go on top of the cover. Anything else I know about ahead of time and I can just remove the cover before.
It is very nice, but it took some doing to get it to stop leaking. It is also a bit of work if you need full bed access. So much so, that I am not considering getting a small trailer. I love being able to walk around on top of it and know my tools are safe though. Got it for security and strength.
Tbf with the bed payload limits in this truck a small trailer would be super useful regardless of tonneau cover.
I have the rough country one, and it's been a love hate relationship.
Love: Functionality, ease of use, weather protection, looks.
Hate: Shipped with most hardware missing, poor instructions, frustrating installation, the hardware that was included was cheap AF and several threaded holes stripped out way before they should have.
To be fair, RC recently sent me a brand new hardware pack and honored their warranty. But it was a huge PITA doing the install originally and going to the hardware store getting what I needed.
Also, if you are going to drill out the holes in the bottom of your bed for drainage, beware that your fuel filler line is immediately underneath the OEM drain hole that you're supposed to widen. Don't drill more than 1/4" through the other side or you'll be kicking yourself later...
Oh wow. Glad they sent you the hardware though. And about the fuel line I had no idea. Thank you!
Have had the backflip for about 3 years now and holding up great overall. Agree with the above that $1k is too much, but nothing quality for our trucks is cheap. Also can speak to backflip cs, as I had a couple small plastic parts wear prematurely and called and they sent me a whole new hardware kit for free. I feel better about supporting a company that stands by its products.
Bought my Tyger cover on Amazon around $200. Two years later and still holding strong.
We had the trifold on our 2017 F150 on our short bed. It had to be taken off if we wanted to fit virtually anything in the bed.
When we traded it in, our 21 has a rollup one. It's heavier, so hurts payload, but so much stronger and rolls neatly out of the way.
I'll never go back to folds and only rollup ones. Especially on shorter beds like yours
I have a roll-n- lock, works pretty good for me 🤷♂️
Peragon is 100%, and can fully be removed if you need more space in the bed.
I loved mine on my SR5.
Stupid question. Can you install the panels closer to the gate? That way the locking key is closer?
dont buy this!! i hated mine so much i popped that badboy off within 2months of frustrating limitations to "bedaccess." jus dont. if ur gona want full access then go with anyother kind....
I have the gator fx hard tri fold. They weee 699 at the end of ‘22. Look like all the other Al tri folds, just rebadged.
Truxedo
The MX4 is awesome, honestly.
It’s a little annoying that you lose a few inches of length and cover the rear window with it all the way open, but if you really want to pull it all the way out it takes 5 minutes once the rails are installed.
That's good to know.
I’m thinking about getting the rough country retractable hard cover, I use the bed of my truck all the time so I think it’s the best of both worlds!
Seems like the best bang for your buck. Right?
Rough Country Tri fold hard top has been great for me!
any leakage? Thats significantly cheaper than the BAKflip
Not that I know of.
I got the TRD one from a regular at my bar cuz he got a camper top, Gave me the thing in brand new condition for like 250$ does everything I need it to
The OEM one from Toyota?
Yessuh
Just went through this myself… I bought a used diamond back from marketplace and I honestly love it.
Just reread your post. Disregard diamond back recommendation if you want full bed access with no height restrictions.
LOMAX is a great aluminum trifold that can be had for around $700 thru user Truckalter on Tacomaworld.com. Same guy can get you a big discount on Bakflips.
THIS. Got mine a few weeks ago and love it.
I'll check it out!
Have you thought about a roll up tonneau cover? I have an access one and it does the job. Get 100% bed access without blocking the rear windows.
Lomax trifold
I was able to get the OEM tri fold for half price from the dealer when I got the truck, other perks as well. But the Tacoma branded one is nice looking but probably not the best on the market.
I prefer the hard covers over the soft covers. Especially since I live where it snows. I have one similar to the bakflip style where it tri-folds. I love it, I could flip it up all the way and still fit my dirt bike in it. I eventually would just take it off when I put my dirt bike in the back cause I hated hearing the whistling noise it could make while fully flipped and traveling on the highway. Removing it by myself was easy after doing it once or twice. So I made it a regular thing. Mine got a little hail damage, but that’s my fault for not putting my truck in the garage. Have had it on since 2018 and still really like having the cargo in the bed secured in my truck. I know someone could easily access it, but it’s not as easy. Plus I have a lock on the tailgate.
2015 TRD Sport Tacoma - Magnetic Grey 4WD Double Cab
I have the F1 and have no issues with dinging. I’d also say my bed access is 95-100%
Security isn't my main concern, so I went with a soft roll-up. To access all of the already tiny bes space.
The Bak x4s is a good alternative to the MX4 as it doesn't block the entire rear view, as shown in your photos.
It would be about 95% of bed access as the MX4 shows, though.
The dents and dings are less likely as it's a hard rolling cover; meaning different materials.
But as anything, it's just how you treat it.
Truxedo I wanted to still have full access to my entire bed. If I'm losing space, even a few inches, then I didnt want it.
I went with the Undercover Armor Flex. It is just like the Bak, but supposedly the coating on the aluminum panels is more durable. About the same price, so I figured why not try it.
I really love my BAK Revolver x4s. https://realtruck.com/p/bak-revolver-x4s-tonneau-cover/v/toyota/tacoma/2022/ Haven't had any real issues with dings or anything. Top is kind of a hard rubber backed by aluminum inside, so I don't really see how it would dent easily. You can't stand on it or put cargo on top of it (okay they SAY you can put 400lbs on it evenly distributed but... I wouldn't), but it's light, easy to roll up and doesn't block much bed access.
Thanks! Interesting roll-up
Mx4 for sure. You get way more than 75%, can fit my dirt bike in no problem.
I have the OEM cover and while it's a fine piece, some moisture does get through. I'm a professional artist and I occasionally travel for work with a bed full of art supplies that I'd really rather not get wet, so I have to be a little cautious.
I haven't tried any of the aftermarket stuff, but mostly dropped in to say don't go for OEM if you have any concerns about water getting on whatever is in your bed.
Look at the Bak revolver. It rolls up like a soft tonneau but when closed is a hard cover.
I vote for the BK4. I have had it for years... No dings or any issues at all.
I’ve had the backflip installed since 2018 with zero problems. In states that don’t rain, the installer may try to skip the rain proofing drain, up to you. I moved to a rainy area and wished I hadn’t skipped it. Even without the drain, I get next to zero water in the bed, I did caulk the back where there were some gaps.
It’s beefy, you can stand on it and it’ll hold 400lbs on top. Way better than electric roll up for access imo, you get more bed open when flipped up. Less parts to fail.
Truxedo Pro X15 Roll up. 5 years (3 in the direct AZ sun) and its holding up great. Like the day I installed it. Rolls up for full access and doesn't block back window.
Get a tyger trifold Way cheaper and very durable
I have the Rough Country fold up and it’s awesome. $200 only, and it’s been great. Looks nice too.
I bought a $600 CAD on Amazon a long while back, shits great. It has a little light that still works, I can stand on it without worry, and no leaks at all.
Can you share a link? Can't find it under that name.
I have a Leer HF350M.
I picked it up a couple of years ago for about $800. Honestly, I love it. It locks and doesn't leak a drop.
I really like this one that came on my truck. Any reason the one you have posted Is 4x the price? - includes clamp kit for bed rail system https://a.co/d/9gHKUql)
I have had a BAK flip for over 10 years. No longer in the best shape because I had it off laying directly on the ground. The rubber between panels though I replaced the more porous foam that touch the bed frame. It’s great for flexibility and protecting cargo from rain.
Got the rough country. It's been great. It's easy to remove also. $700 on their site with discount code found online.
Amazon’s cheap Tyger trifold.
Softopper
I’ve had several Bakflip MX4 covers and it’s not technically 100% bed access but it’s certainly not 75% either. Maybe more like 90-95%. But with the cover folded and standing upright to allow that much of the bed to be uncovered, it does block your rear window if that matters to you. And the panels don’t dent or ding easily. They’re aluminum so it takes a decent strike to ding them. Of course anything can be dented but I’ve never had a dent in one from several years of use. There are other brands that are cheaper and I’ve used a few of them on different trucks but the quality (mostly fitment wise) seems lacking on the lower end ones. Although I still think $1,000+ for the Bakflip is too much but that’s the world we live in.
