Is “A Demonstration of Power” any good? Literature/Fiction

A week ago, we released an open-source solarpunk tabletop role-playing game: Fully Automated!

Now, we’re rolling out the playable adventures that make up the starter campaign. We just released the first adventure: “A Demonstration of Power”:

The vote to elect a new chair of the Pacifica Grid closes in four days, and an auditor thinks there's something suspicious going on. Records of an incident in the lead candidate's past have been destroyed in a cyberattack, and the manager responsible for the files is being mysteriously tight lipped. Keeping power in the right hands requires answers, and it's going to take a few determined problem solvers to get them!

World building is fun, but the proof of the pudding is in the tasting. So what do folks think of the kind of stories that are meant to show off what's fun about this setting?

The game module is free, and about 25 pages, so if you've got few minutes let us know what you think. What works? What doesn’t? We’ve got two much bigger adventures coming out in the next few weeks, and honest feedback on this story could make these upcoming releases better, so be candid.

Getting seriously green thumbs in Ottawa?Growing / Gardening

So, your boy is broke, isn't handy, and is totally unqualified for anything to do with plants, biology, the works. But, being on this sub makes me wanna put some work in. Learn the permaculture/botany/horticulture/vertical farming stuff, get doing it.

So I'm asking this sub for help on that front. First of all, is there any important difference between those things starting out, or would any of them be a good jumping-off point? Second, should I even try to apply for internships, or whatever? Where and how, if so? Any advice in what to look at would be appreciated.

Closed circuit plant-chicken-earthworm-water systemVideo

Unfortunately this video has no subtitle available, but the visual itself provides a lot of worm compost bin design ideas, and this time stamp in particular he's showcasing a closed circuit system where the chicken poop and pee down a grate into a vermicompost drawer that breaks down the poop, and the worm tea drains down another layer, which gets pumped up to the top plant layer, which then purify the liquid to be drinkable for the chicken in the coop, and repeats.

This guy retired early after getting sick from work, and spent the past 11 years getting into personal farming, soil improvement, vermicomposting, and now upcycling scrap wood into vermicompost systems as well as opening his tiny farm as educational example for people to take his experience and knowledge to spread recycle and soil improvement around the country.

Solar punk in real lifeAsk the Sub

I'm very interested in solarpunk but currently, with everything going on in the world, I just want to see something in real life that brings hope. Do yall know where I can find real solarpunk architecture? Is there a subreddit or anything?

Types of Anti-Technology in FictionLiterature/Fiction

In writing a solarpunk novel, I'm trying to create some ideas for solarpunk-based innovations which, for the sake of arguement, I'm calling "Anti-Technology". While there is still advanced technology from the Age of Hyper-Capitalism, I wanted to focus on innovations that originated from more sustainable sources or geared towards more environmentally-sustainable purposes.

For instance, inventions such as Solar Weave (outer clothing that serve as wearable solar panels), Mag Rifles (compact railgun-like multipurpose launchers) and API Hives (bee drones that use over-the-air computation to support a Hive AI) are possible, but I also wanted other more low-tech solutions compared to the rapid consumerism we have currently or in the Age of Hyper Capitalism.

Any suggestions or questions are welcome!

Solarpunk music?Music

I don’t know a whole lot about Solarpunk, but I have been interested in the concept of it recently ever since I saw a few YouTube videos about it. I absolutely love the idea of technology and nature being able to work together in harmony, and in my book a Solarpunk future is a perfect, utopian one.

I realized that the concept of Solarpunk reminds me a lot of the album “Nurture” by Porter Robinson. If you haven’t heard it, Porter does a great job of mixing electronic sounds with fresh, natural ones. It really feels like the type of music that a Solarpunk society would listen to.

I really want to hear more music like that, and was wondering if anyone would have any similar recommendations, or just music that makes you think of Solarpunk in general.

Sangamon Taylor from Stephenson's book ZodiacLiterature/Fiction

Pretty new to this whole solarpunk thing. I tried going through Sunvault - wasn't my thing. Reaching back in the (little) sci-fi I've read, I feel like ST from Zodiac is a pretty good proto-solarpunk! Chemist turned environmental activist...

Solarpunk Community Map - Add your projects!Action / DIY

Hey all, inspired by this recent post, and this much older post, I thought it might be useful to have a map of real life solarpunk action and best practices. So in the spirit of this very active community, I present a first version of a possible Solarpunk Community Map.

Obviously, right now it is empty: I'm still just one person and can only add the stuff in my city - and I'd rather not dox myself that easily. That's where you come in! If you want to help the community, there are three ways to do it:

  1. Populate the map with local projects and communities.

Simply add them using the big plus sign on the map. Right now, all you need are a title and a description. Feel free to also add citywide group chats or other decentralized organizations.

  1. Check and review the submissions.

In order to combat spam and brigading, I'm still reviewing the submissions. But I'm just one person and while I try to update the map on a regular basis, I'm happy about all the people who might want to help with reviewing the submissions as well.

  1. Improve upon the idea.
If you have better ideas, tools and the skills on how to set something like this up, I encourage you to do it! My webskills are amateurish, so I just hacked something together. I'd love to see what else is possible if some group of people with real skill takes up on the idea.

what if we turned mutual aid, community building, and self care into a real life rpg? a concept for an app called NadirStriveSlice Of Life

I have this idea for a cool solarpunk magitech rpg mobile/desktop app called Nadirus aetherstrive where stuff like hunger, hp, additional stats are added to your character and there would be a real life inventory system called corporea that can be upgraded through repairing or regifting items to others (the equivalent virtual items will be tagged as Vaetheris items). I'd also love to add a magic system, cybernetic augments, magical gardening and species changing mechanics to customizable characters. I always thought the idea of an anarchist video game would be awesome.

it's not meant to be incriminating in any way but it tries to achieve all the needs of community building and self management to the best of it's abilities.
I also want to make map events anonymous by using peer to peer open street maps and connecting through encrypted channels to minimize metadata analysis. all photos sent on the app will have their metadata scrubbed automatically and faces will have a blurring option.

there will be abilities to add custom stat blocks and community driven events and contents and the app will be free and open source on f-droid and codeberg instead of the play store to eliminate google tracking

I think it would be cool to level up from dumpster diving and creating free food events for people to join. I tend to gamify my life a lot and making a mutual aid community would be really special. I kinda want to take inspiration from like ingress prime and habitica and sort of mash them into a transhumanist solarpunk final fantasy type world.

I think if we made mutual aid fun, it would make real life a lot more interesting... especially if there's live action roleplay aspects involved

Solarpunk consensus open discussionDiscussion

I’m not sure if this is consensus between futurists/ solarpunks , but when I think about Solarpunk I think fundamentally about building alternative power and the idea that operating outside a system is fundamental to opposing it. As for what I think Solarpunk would look like I think about operating entirely within and between small self reliant communities within a larger direct democratic system focused on the development of scientific knowledge and technological innovation for the greater good as from the eyes of the planet and its inhabitants.

Obviously this this is just what I see and it’s far far more complex when needing to be actualised, but I’m wondering if this is generally what people think of when thinking about a Solarpunk movement off the back of a green Industrial Revolution?

Specifically interested in the idea of alternative power at the heart of Solarpunk ideas? :)

If you were tasked with bootstrapping a viable solarpunk city (money is no object), how would you do it?Discussion

Anything from transportation, agriculture, industry, housing, urban design, governance, attracting newcomers, etc.

Just a fun hypothetical :)

why are we scared of solarpunk getting ugly.Discussion

im just thinking honestly but like

in order for us to really see a solarpunk world, revolution has to happen. and revolution is not gonna look pretty and peaceful and green is it? to how do we reconcile that through a solarpunk lens? I'm just thinking because a lot of stuff on here although nice, and useful (in a post-capitalist/ apolcalyptic world) of lot of stuff just renders itself 'pretty' and ignores the well needed PUNK elements to actually bring this thing into reality.

so i ask? why are we scared of solarpunk getting ugly? and are there posts and places or books or videos i can consume to learn more about it?

Requesting criticism and ideas for a solarpunk map of my city!Original Content

Hello friends! first time posting here, hope i'm doing it right :) As a fun side project to a paper I'm writing I'm creating this future map of the city I live in (Leiden, the Netherlands). I'm writing my paper on spectatorship at the 1939 Futurama exhibit in NY and at the end of the paper I discuss the solarpunk movement. To process some of the things I learned about solarpunk while researching I drew this map, but since the community is one of the things I love most about this movement I'd love to hear your thoughts on it! There's still a lot of room for new details. What do you think is missing? what kind of solarpunk solutions would you like to implement in the cities of today? Please let me know :)
Although it was fun to make I know my map is probably a bit amateurish; I'm most unsure about the market hall in the train station thing. It's a work in progress
Here's the map:

thanks in advance for your comments!
p.s. prezi doesn't work so well on mobile I'm afraid
