The gasp I gosped at this baby using a HIGH CHAIR as a car seat
Brain hypoxia/no common sense sufferersI had to call 911 when I was leaving my job one day because I saw a grandma strapping her grandson (maybe 4yo) into the front seat of a convertible car without a booster or anything 😳 I tried to stop her from leaving and even grabbed my boss (I work in childcare) but she refused to stop. Watched the cops pull her over a few min later so that was fun
Thank you for calling. When I worked in insurance I had a 7 year old who died in a car accident. He died because his grandma didn't believe in a kid being in the backseat. She wanted him up front with her. This was before the car seat laws changed to be up to 8. So he didn't need a car seat but he sure wasn't supposed to be in the front passenger seat.
Grandma's car was rear ended which forced her into the car in front of her. Deploying her airbags. The airbags crushed and I mean fully crushed the 7 year old's face. Kid died choking on his blood and bone. 100% preventable of grandma had just followed the laws.
Even if I wasn't a mandated reported I would have called. But like legally I was pretty much required to call since that was 100% child endangerment
I also called the police on someone with kids in the bed of a pickup truck. They were on a busy 40 mph limit street, crossing an even busier 50 mph limit street. I didn't see if they caught the guy, but I'm sure he'll end up just telling his daughters to make sure they don't pop up and wave at other drivers at stoplights anymore.
geez, i am not a fan of even dogs in truck beds
I feel bad that I used to drive around with my dog unrestrained in the back seat!
They have dog seat belts on Amazon , I was thinking of getting one because my dog loves to ride but I worry about having an accident.
I recently called 911 because two young women threatened me in a parking lot after I mentioned their 3 year old needed to be in a car seat (he was roaming free in the center of a mini van).
Cops came IMMEDIATELY, pulled surveillance camera footage, and interviewed parking lot attendants while sending other squad cars out looking for the offenders. I was shocked (pleasantly) at the response. I mostly called because I was threatened with my kids in the car but also wanted to make sure the cops knew they had an unrestrained toddler in the car.
Question on this, I saw a kid restrained in a car seat (FF) in the front seat of a suburban yesterday. (Older, so idk about airbag situation). I really wanted to talk to mom, but didn’t think it would go well ( see seemed a little volatile). My state has pretty strict child passenger safe seat rules. Should I have called 911?
Every state has different laws. In my state it’s not illegal for a child to sit in the front seat.
I just double checked and apparently the actual law is “must ride in the back seat when under 13 and practical”
I used to ride in the back of the pick up all the time…20 years ago and with a cap on it. Now? I wonder what the hell my parents were thinking!?
The things our parents did were crazy AF. Sometimes I’m surprised a lot more of us aren’t dead.
We used to ride in the bucket of my grandfather’s tractor and there were a few kids killed that same way out west a few years ago. There’s a lot I did that I don’t let mine do.
Does she think 5 in 1 stands for Shampoo, Conditioner, Body wash, High chair, & Car seat?
This comment wins. Thanks for the laugh
If he won’t sit in anything else… then he doesn’t go in the car. We don’t get to ignore laws and safety to keep a child happy.
Right? My kid is 3 in August and we haven't managed to get him on his push bike yet, even though he likes the idea of it... Because every time we get his helmet on, he screams blue murder until we take it off again. But he's not getting on a bike without a helmet, end of story. And pottering around on a push bike at the park is far less likely to result in serious injury than getting in a car accident without a proper car seat! Why would you ever take the risk?
My 2 year old resisted the helmet too. I left it where it was accessible to him and let him mess with the straps and try putting it on himself. He got used to it pretty quick and has no issue wearing it. Maybe that'll work for you?
It's definitely worth a try, thanks!
That’s a 5 in one, the 5 steps are all intended for kitchen use with one being hooked onto a kitchen chair. None of the uses involve the car. That kid doesn’t even look that big. She could walk into Walmart and buy him a Horizons for $100.
There are free car seat events all over, and I would bet if a desperate person went to a fire station or police station and asked that the first responders would figure out a way to get that person a car seat.
on facebook marketplace i see people giving away car seats they got but their baby didn’t make it earth side or selling cheap car seats they bought but had to replace bc their baby hated it. and normally im not for 2nd hand car seats but fuck that’s better than this….
We got my parents a back up seat at Walmart for 50. This is ridiculous
This makes me feel physically sick. I knew nothing about child safety when my baby was born and we borrowed an infant car seat. No one in my family had done rear facing (besides de infant seat) before and people still find it odd that my 5yo is rear facing.. but this is unacceptable!
He’d probably be a hell of a lot safer not even riding in a chair at all at this point. Lord have mercy. 🙏🙏🙏
He would be. A CPST could even help them use a ride safer vest
Ugh these are the kinds of people who learn to hold a boundary (a healthy thing!) and then use it to excuse the most stupid choices.
Ugh at the very least I’m glad to know she’s ordered an actual car seat for him.
I put my kids in available car seats starting in 1974, before car seat laws existed.
When we know better, we do better. There is no excuse in 2024.
I agree there is no excuse in 2024. I also remember the “car seats” that were available in the 60’s. It hooked over the seat and was absolutely useless as protection for a baby. When we were in Germany, my parents bought a 1960 VW Bus. We used to sit on the back area over the engine, no seatbelts in the car. It was a miracle nothing happened to us.
A miracle indeed. My husband (in his 30s) went home from the hospital without a seat in a car with no seatbelts.
Also I like that steering wheel lol pretty nice
It’s rare to see crash testing that really doesn’t go well, but the Center for Pet Safety and Subaru did crash testing on pet products a few years ago
People don’t understand just how quickly things can unravel and disintegrate during crash testing - and at only 35mph
The Midwest crate here is the most jarring, and all the harnesses here (except sleepypod)
People think that they’re safe just because. They’re not. In an accident that chair would shatter and if the force of the impact didn’t do significant damage, all the shards of plastic sure would
What was that comment about?
Which?
Something about the kid having special needs and needing a bigger chair?
Cerebral palsy, is my guess. Because of the foot boots.
So those are called AFOs (ankle foot orthosis) and they aren’t necessarily for cerebral palsy! I had to wear them as a kid for some gait issues related to damaged tendons. A friend of mine had to wear them for overly tight tendons making him walk on his tiptoes! He could very well have some kind of issue like cerebral palsy but not definitely!
They just help with range of motion.
This. They can also be stabilizing aftercare after an injury. I had a classmate who took a dive on roller skates from not very high, but landed poorly. He was rocking an array of orthoses for at least a year after he got out of a 6+ month cast.
That kid looks like he’d fit in a regular carseat, though?
I would say so yeah. Just wondering if that’s the “reasoning”
Looks like it. There are special car seats if for example he has something with his hips. This isn’t a kid just got in an accident and we only just now can’t make our current car seat work type of situation. He’s not too large by height or weight for a typical car seat.
People seriously don't understand how physics work.
CPST here. If this is the US, if you see this (or something similar, or a completely unrestrained child) IRL on the road, call 911. If you just see it on social media, I’d call CPS. This is not just bad parenting, it’s actually illegal.
I have personally called 911 to report an unrestrained child and they took it very seriously. In my case it was a child in the bed of a pickup truck. A child in a high chair in a car is also unrestrained.
