I recently went on a road trip up the southern east coast. Here’s some pictures I took.
We didn't deserve Abe, but man, we needed him like no other.
Agreed. I’m not a fan of massive, altar-like monuments for politicians, but Lincoln absolutely deserves his.
I probably wouldn’t support had he not been assassinated. I’m kinda glad we didn’t get to see him fuck-up his legacy. Because he was killed, he became a monument to those that dedicate their lives to the union at all costs, so it makes sense to build actually build a monument for it.
Imagine if Grant was killed like was intended with Lincoln. He would have never become president and would not be associated with 8 years of constant scandals in the presidential cabinet. He would be remembered as the man who led the union to victory and was killed for his dedication to his nation.
Ehh nobody knows how a second Lincoln term would've been but It couldn't have been worse than Andrew Johnsons term, Andrew Johnson single handedly held the country back 150 years with allowing former Confederates into power thus they established the black codes which later became Jim Crowe Segregation. Crazy to think the nations best President is US history is followed by its worst President.
but I couldn't have been worse than Andrew Johnsons term,
Preach it. We are still paying for Andrew Johnson's mistakes. Reconstruction was one of the worst periods of American history. Our biggest failure was the post Civil War era.
Fair point. I’ll say, however that I think Washington was the best and Buchanan was the worst
I think actively failing to serve your country is worse than setting back civil rights; because Buchanan failed to do the job he was assigned. For all his faults, at least Johnson was loyal to the union. Buchanan saw the country falling apart and did nothing to stop it - not a single serious attempt was made at keeping the country together. Johnson may have had worse moral (and by all accounts did), but in terms of the presidency, you can’t get worse than failing at the one job you’re required to do: keep the country alive and well.
As for Washington, that’s just preference. Washington and Lincoln are definitely the best presidents we’ll ever have. For me, I just find that Washington setting such a high bar so early, along with voluntarily stepping down, to be just a tad bit more impressive than keeping the union together after a large chunk split off, and emancipating slaves. It’s a thin margin, though. I wish our elections were between Washingtons and Lincolns; I wish our elections would end in a result that, no matter what, will be an overall good to our nation.
