New house with two (small) 1950s bathrooms. Trying to determine how to best upgrade with potentially keeping all of the tile (floors & walls). I’m personally less attached to the floor tile in the powder blue bathroom than in the teal bathroom… but welcome ideas.
I agree. Looks well done and in excellent condition.
glad i’m not the first one to look at it and think keep it?
My first thought was “DONT CHANGE A THING.”
I agree with this. I would do period appropriate updating. Find a new vanity light that matches the 1950s. Find a color that accents the color of the tile. I bet if you did just those two cheap things the bathroom would look great.
I think original elements from the house are so cool.
Agee. I would update the 5 gallon tank toilet. Newer toilets flush so much better with less water. That light fixture is waiting for a new tasteful fixture. Whomever lived in this house, did a great job keeping it spotless.
Wrong that 5 gallon tank is gold.
My god if I need 5 gallons to flush my poop I’m going to adjust my diet. 😂
But if you need 5 gallons, you're going to want to have all 5 :-)
Wrong! That 5 gallon tank is worth more than gold
Agree!! We have the original 1950s toilet in our half bath. The flush on that thing has some power and always flushes everything down in the first try. The newer toilet in our main bath barely flushes and you have to hold the handle down in order to properly flush it. I absolutely hate that toilet.
I replaced our low flush toilet with one that uses a little more water and what a difference. You actually use less water because you don't have to flush three times
I replaced my big tank toilets and the new Kohler toilets work better.
Better than flushing five times.
I had a 50s bathroom just like this and added a more functional vanity (you will be limited by space here but a vanity with some storage underneath and some workable space above would improve things functionally. A cool fixture, mirror and toilet and you’ve got a good thing going.
I actually love it except for those tiny round-seat toilets. Were those designed by tiny people and nobody wanted to admit that when a dude sits on them, his junk hits the front, and his dirty ass-hole is resting on the back?
In the 1950s there weren’t as many phat azzez
True but there were a whole lot more peeps on amphetamines and diet pills too
I am skinny as hell, and there is still no way my junk doesn't contact the front
That is totally true! The rounder bowl is definitely shallower than our newer toilet and it actually sits a little lower to the ground. Fortunately I'm a female so I don't have to deal with my junk hitting the bowl.
Yeah, I really like the little round toilets, but I am a petite woman.
lol we just replaced 2 1970s toilets for these very reason plus they don’t flush well.
So what you’re saying is that you need an elongated bowl. Up top!
Not all of us are that ... um, elongated....
😆😆😆🫶🏽🙌🏽
My dad called those round toilets “peter bumpers” 😂
I would live it alone as I love older houses and the look. I like the color too.
This is exact. I also would only add to this list and update on the faucet to something that "fit" better.
No, don't touch the mirrors/medicine cabinets. Just add period appropriate shades to the vanity lights.
I LOVE.
Cant forget a curtain as well… haha
Leave them alone. Nothings appears broken so don’t change a thing.
It’s perfect! Don’t do anything! I’m jealous
Leave it.
Put in new light fixtures, maybe fresh wall paint, and blinds. Leave the rest as is!
A wild fun wallpaper could be really nice!
I would love to see them hire a person to do stained glass windows😭
It's perfect as is!
Yeah I couldn’t agree more with everyone else. I would feel bad gutting this bathroom for a Reno for a more modern look. It’s beautiful
I would kill for the original bathrooms in my house. This looks great. Leave it and go with the 1950's vibe.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
All you really need is a beautiful curtain for the window. I’ll leave it as is gorgeous.
Here’s the thing… two things really; first, yes it’s old, but people pay me money to make their bathrooms look like this. Secondly homes were built different back then and it’s the kind of project that once you start, it can have all kinds of fun, money hungry, problems. So, if you start, have the knowledge to tackle it or the budget to pay someone who does. Other than that, start with paint and light. These can change a room. Toilet, pedestal, fixtures, mirror, and you could do a cool wall paper.
In two weeks I’m having two bathrooms remodeled to look like this. Trying to restore my house to original materials. I hope OP doesn’t change much to these.
Thank you.
Careful if you try and remove those soap dishes, they’ll take out part of your wall, learned this the hard way…
I would not touch that. That’s amazing!
Those are cool as hell. Partially because it would be so expensive to re-create it today, it’s timeless, functional, and firs each space well. Only variables to consider are wall colors, fixtures, and window treatment -
Just replace the toilet paper roll and your good to go!
Nothing. Looks awesome.
Don’t forget window treatment no one wants to watch their neighbor sink a few
It is looks cool.
So happy for the comments here! Keep it as is!
Came to say the same as others.. keep it as is.. it’s beautiful!!
If you really want to change it I’d add window coverings, a hanging plant in a colourful pot and some colour to the walls (wallpaper might be too much? Maybe some bold coloured prints?) but honestly these are great as is.
Why do you want to upgrade? Is there a problem you want to fix? Not enough storage or something?
Omg I love this bathroom
It is gorgeous as it is!
That medicine cabinet is a treasure!
I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s gorgeous.
It's looks good the way it sits now, don't replace what isn't broke.
I love this ❤️
Everyone would appreciate it if you install drapes
Lol… thanks. Haven’t moved in yet!!
Ideas? Poo poo and pee pee goes in the toilet Sink is for washing hands after flushing the growler.
Hope this helps
This is easy. Wallpaper or color. The floors to me seem newer. I’ve had 2 1900s homes. The tile in these don’t match what I’ve seen in old homes. But it seems they tried to keep the older vibe. They are the tile that we were advised to use with my 1904 home. The tiles are not slippery, and don’t hold grime like some non slip do. Very nice.
Thanks. Was wondering about this too.
My parents have a 1950s house with almost the exact same floor tiles/pattern in a different color scheme. I'd say it's highly likely that the flooring is original.
Omg. That's awesome. I want it.
Don't change it x
Adorable! Please leave it!
Id keep it as is. Gorgeous.
You could use cool furniture to add storage to meet your needs (perhaps under the sink?) but otherwise I think you should keep them! They're so neat!
Very pretty
I love it!
Leave it.
These are beautiful and you will probably never get this kind of workmanship from a present-day contractor. Keep it.
As long as it’s not cracked keep it! It’s gorgeous.
So unique and well crafted. Usually those toothbrush holders don’t fit modern brushes so maybe replace that, and add a vanity that still floats. Don’t bring it to the ground. Also ensure the mirror has storage
It’s gorgeous I’d try to restore it rather than remodel
Love it as is.
This is one of the nicest bathrooms of this style I’ve seen I think. Seriously consider leaving it as is. Timeless color choices it’s the tiles. I’ve seen these with hideous color tiles before. This one looks very nice.
It’s beautiful, and be aware that the mastic used to attach tiles and mirrors in that era may contain asbestos. The bathrooms in my 1955 house certainly did. So if you remodel, there may be additional cost (if you do it the right way) or some risk to your health.
Do nothing. It’s incredible.
Omg it’s perfect. Don’t touch it! If you do just change the light fixture
I would leave everything except the mirror put around the circle mirror there or gold framed one it would look fabulous. Paint that cupboard door a very, very dark gray and put a new knob on it.
Whatever you do, don’t get rid of any of the tile
Hang a shade for privacy and call it a day. Walk away. That’s a beautiful 🤩 bathroom. I design/art direct movie sets for a living and this is sweet! 🩷 Edit to add: looking a little closer and you are right, the light over the sink needs some period correct help. Still in love though
Omg i love it
Keep it
I love them. I would probably only accessorize. Beautiful.
I’d leave as is, looks really nice. Find some glass bulb covers, and bulbs to fit, that will go over the mirror. I can see the screws to hold glass in place.
OMG leave it.
Looks great. Something to brag about. Why would you want to change it?
Leave it!
I wouldn’t touch a thing
This is gorgeous MCM and if I were in your shoes I'd add storage and change not a single thing. Please don't change it!
If nothing is wrong with it, I’d keep it. It has a really nice retro look to and seems to be in good condition.
If you don’t like the color, than that’s fine. Maybe stick with a similar look with finishes that you like. I’d for sure keep a patterned file floor in mind
It's beautiful! Far better than any cookie cutter home depot bathroom.
Put up a curtain that matches the beautiful tile and you’re finished.
Larger window for better pooping views
Leave it alone it is lovely
Please don’t ruin them. They are perfect.
I'd keep it as is! It's lovely
Change nothing!
I would find some fun light fixture covers to upgrade the bare bulb. Maybe some cute curtains? That’s all I would personally do. Maybe paint?
Leave it. These are immaculate.
Why touch it. This bathroom is beautiful
It’s in amazing shape. Maybe just update the toilet and sink and fixtures and keep the rest.
DONT TOUCH IT PLEASE
I like it as is.
Are they back to back? Keep them identical but replace the mirror with a window so people think their reflection is gone!
Oh the money I would pay to have the original bathroom back in my 1950s home!!! Please leave it be!!
Gorgeous
I cannot see how anyone can look at this and thing "I need to change something here" hhhhfhasjksafk
Leave it alone. It looks pristine from the pics!
Yes. I absolutely love that bathroom
Honestly, it’s tastefully done, colors are very relaxing and beautiful. In excellent condition.. if the rest of the home is in similar style.. keep it. At least until you live there for a little bit and get a feel of the home and what you would change. Give it a little time.
Leave it alone 10 years will be in fashion again. Green and yellow 70’s kitchens coming back in style. Maybe new light fixture that bare bulb is little blinding.
Put up some blinds?
It’s adorable! I’d leave it alone.
Don’t remodel these. Enjoy them!
Do not change a thing. It would border on criminal if you did.
I wouldn’t change a thing it’s glorious
It’s darling! Keep it as is!
Don't you dare touch this
What everyone said — these bathrooms are great. I might update the light fixtures, maybe also the mirrors, and add curtains, but that’s it. I agree with you about the floor tile but they both look like they’re still in great shape, so I’d just put a nice rug (not a bath mat) under the sinks to break up the pattern.
Swap fixtures and lights knobs with black and call it a day.
Paint the wall light blue
Gutting that bathroom is a dirty dusty day…….!
Wow, rust reminds me of Jacob’s Ladder. But your bathroom looks very well done and clean.
"look honey, Bob's on the shitter again"
For the love of god! Please don’t rip these out!!
They’re beautiful and in amazing shape.
Leave it. It’s beautiful.
Id rather have that than my 1970 RR.
I had a vintage bathroom like this but with pink tile, ans added wallpaper on the wall behind the sink that coordinated with the tile. It ended up really cute (I think lol). Maybe look at some pics of vintage bathrooms where wallpaper was added, for inspiration.
What is the thing above the toilet? Storage? Because I think that's my favorite part.
Yes, it’s a little storage cubby. We were surprised by that too.
Leave it!
Leave it.
Love that bathroom!
Embrace it. Maybe a funky/cool wallpaper? Add some color, a nice vanity with storage, updated fixtures and window coverings
Leave the tile, it is a selling point.
Maybe frosted tint on the window, unless you like shitting in front of your neighbors (to establish dominance of course)
Definitely keep the wall tile. A black/white tile floor wood look amazing in the one. Walnut vanities with storage, gold round mirrors and sconce lights look look gorgeous with that color wall tile.
If you keep the tile, get it regrouted.
A nice cover to the light fixture and some blinds that give you privacy but let in light.
Otherwise this is a beautiful bathroom that deserves to be untouched untill absolutely necessary.
Please please please leave the first one alone. It’s a classic that many people would kill to have. There are entire subreddits dedicated to their appreciation. The quality of materials alone are irreplaceable, the tiles are gorgeous. I’m incredibly jealous.
Love it
Keep as is. It looks good. Don’t light money on fire.
Maybe put some blinds there. Can people just see in during the winter?
Your 1950's bathrooms look much nicer than mine which are bright pink everywhere including the sink, toilet & tub, walls, floor & wallpaper!
The sinks are beautiful and in excellent condition, I am sure you could find or build a nice little console or cabinet to sit underneath for storage and keep those.
Other than that I agree with others to leave it as original as possible! Maybe some paint and window treatments and new lighting. You could fit a cute little floating shelf over the blue bathroom toilet too!
Both bathrooms are gorgeous and I'm super jealous :)
Nothing wrong with it, modernise taps, light fittings etc to modernise, but keep the rest!
New light fixtures will go a long way. If there isn’t an exhaust fan, adding one might be a good idea.
You could also add another ceiling fixture to brighten them up after dark. Recessed lights, although not period appropriate add functional light without being very noticeable during the day.
Beautiful rooms!
I would leave it. Looks good. Maybe put a pathos in there?
Some plants would be cool
Crazy how these 80 year old tile showers dont leak but todays tile systems require over the top ego driven water proofing products that are pointless.
I think it's great. They don't make them like that anymore.
I would be thrilled to have these bathrooms. The older toilet does use more water to flush, but water saving toilets are not perfect.
I love it!! Maybe as stated by many before update the fixtures and let it ride.
I’d change the light fixture and probably the mirror. I like everything else as is.
This is awesome. Only fix what is needed. Ands putt a curtain on that window!
If you touch a single thing, I will hunt you down and do unspeakable things.
This bathroom is gorgeous!😍 If you want to change it, you could look into some cool towels and a neat bath mat or rug to go under the sink. You can add a cute little piece of art over the toilet if you wanted. Perhaps some vintage style cafe curtains for the window? And there are some really awesome lighting options, including vintage inspired that would look phenomenal in this bathroom! I would honestly say to just enjoy, really!🩷
Leave it. Please.
I wish my bathroom looked this good.
I think it looks kinda cool tbh, retro themed and looks in really good shape
I adore everything about this bathroom except for the light fixture. But when you replace it, make sure it’s nothing too modern.
New lighting, new mirror, new shower curtain and a nice window treatment would do wonders.
I love it the way it is!!!
I’d say it looks great already 👍
Leave it
The only thing I would change would be the window; those cross hatches are just plain stupid, and they inhibit the view and make it look like you’re in jail
Upgrade toilet to elongated and slow close lid (maybe built in bidet?)
If you buy a new vanity it will be *Particle Board* which sucks
Either way you will *never* get the same quality tile job you have now.
Personally, I’d keep it.
OMG IT IS AMAZING!!!! If you want to mix it up, add wallpaper and accessories. Otherwise enjoy your gorgeous bathroom.
Keep theeeeeese pleeeeeeeeeeeease!!!
I'd change out the sinks for vanities, but I'd leave the rest alone. I love the floors. I have to say those are the biggest windows I've ever seen in a bathroom.
Replace the vanity light. Otherwise this is very good
So you like people watching you take a crap?
Why would you remodel it. This looks amazing. I would keep as it is.
Keep all the tile in both bathrooms and the original sink, that floor tile was flat which made it easy to clean.
It’s perfect. I wouldn’t change a thing.
Just something for the window so people can’t watch you pooping
It’s beautiful like it is
Maybe a curtain for the window
I like the walls, but is that linoleum?
I'd change the light at least. Probably era matching neutral tile.
Looks amazing! Id do a new mirror toilet and fixtures that's it.
Leave it. It is beautiful
I got suggested this community and not even part of it but please keep this bathroom and just update for functionality. It’s beautiful
I kind of love it
Do nothing, it is perfect! Lucky you!!
It is so beautiful!
I love how bright they are! Maybe curtains to pull for privacy when needed, something white or otherwise light. Love the floor and mirror of the teal room. I don’t love the floor in the blue room but being as it’s in such good shape it’s still not worth touching. New lights and I think you’re good!
Don’t touch it
Leave it.
If it's in good shape, keep it! This is incredible as is. Update toilet, light fixtures, mirror, etc. but other than that, that bathroom is beautiful.
