Is anybody using an internet only provider in Red Deer? I don’t want TV and landline services. Is anybody using VMedia or TekSavvy? If so how do you rate them?
Have you tried TPIA (third party internet) It is shaw or rogers or Telus. But from a company that buys the service from them at a bulk rate and pass the savings on to you… (basically same internet at a lower monthly price.)
Do you know any names of these companies? TIA.
We looked into it at the time, but there wasn't much out there, and the savings just weren't there.
I have to agree for the most part Shaw is the quickest and I think I pay $100 a month.
Shaw is no more, now you have to deal with the ineptness of Rogers, complete upside down 🤡 company that doesn’t give two 💩s about their customers.
For real, ever since the switch it's sucked. At least with Shaw you could talk to someone over the phone, now they just push you to online text chat and it really sucks
Cheapest I found is Lightspeed. 300mb $60
That's what I use too.
Me three
Teksavvy is great but if you have a problem with your line they cannot do anything. They have to send out a tech from the vendor that owns the line and they are not inclined to do anything helpful for a competitor. If you don't have any technical issues that require a callout their service is great and tech support is knowledgable and helpful.
Former telecom tech here. I'd say more that we were very limited in what we could do. There were very specific agreements in place for what equipment we were allowed to touch. For example, we were only responsible for the outside wiring up until it enters the home. if there was anything wrong or suboptimal past that point, we were not allowed to work on it.
I use Teksavvy as well is good and great price. Only use internet as I use an android box to stream. Never had any issues only if Shaw goes down it does as they piggyback off their services. Have also used VMedia which is another good company same they piggyback off Shaw . They also have a utility company which is better priced too.
That's all true, but I'm talking about the line quality. If your specific drop (from the hub to your house) is degrading, needs new filters, or some other kind of tech service that requires a call-out, you will find that the service can be quite rough. Like the other poster said, Teksavvy isn't allowed to touch any equipment they don't own, and if you're a Teksavvy customer the owner of that equipment isn't very motivated to get it working right for you, just 'well enough'. This left me with service that was often spotty or dropped for 10-15 minutes at a time. Right after switching back to Shaw all these problems magically cleared up, despite it being their lines, cause they are motivated to fix things that make them money versus create competition. We really need stronger antitrust for these telecom clowns.
I live in a condo, and use “can com”, https://www.can-com.com/Bundles/Internet-TV-Phone-Bundles
They use the shaw internet lines and are much cheaper. They have no contract and you can cancel with 1 month notice. I’ve had them for 3 years and have had no issues and been very happy with them.
I have refer a friend code 35887 that gets you $10 off.
I just used this code. Thanks!
Teksavvy is great. Good prices too. Ask for a discount and get the 10mps one.... 35$ a month.

Netsetter, they've been good for me so far
Best place to review your options is https://www.planhub.ca/home-internet - I've worked for a TPIA for the past year. As other comments have said, you can get competitive rates and generally good customer service through a TPIA, but any outages/issues attributed to the infrastructure itself will need a line technician to be dispatched from the line provider (Shawgers). If you've had reliable speeds and services over that network already and just want to stop dealing with Shaw/Rogers directly, I recommend going TPIA.
I’m with shaw. It’s very fast (1gb) and I’ve had no issues.
Is xplorenet still around?
Starlink
Can’t set up the dish, I live in a condo building other wise I would do it.
Been a few years, but we always used Shaw or Telus (as much as i hated them)- whoever had the best deal. Flipped back and forth. Never had a landline or TV. It was always cheaper/better/faster than the smaller providers.
