There is a long-ass response to this on the original post (CuratedTumblr) that is like a satire of the sort of excuses students give us, but it’s serious. What is so hard to understand that we as professors are there to teach and evaluate comprehension, not sit on a grade like a dragon on gold? Stuff happens outside of class. We get it. But that doesn’t mean you magically don’t have to know the material of your course and ‘deserve’ a passing grade.

I love this.
I’ve been thinking about it all day, and I think many students see a grade as something like an evaluation of them as a person.
I just wish we could make higher education be about education. If it was actually about learning, this wouldn’t be a problem. No one would want a grade they didn’t earn.
What bothers me most isn’t even the fact that students only care about the value of the grade and degree, and don’t care an ounce about the knowledge itself. It’s that this value system is externally imposed. Things will stay this way even if both the students and professors would like things to be different
Right, but if that stuff that happens outside of class has impeded the student’s comprehension for whatever reason, their comprehension is still what it is.
No exam? 0 marks
“I love you” is my favorite part
Is this real? I love you.
perhaps not literally, but spiritually yes
Spoiler: The student is majoring in English.
I am not familiar with r/CuratedTumblr, but the comments on this post do not restore my faith in humanity.
refer to student support/mental health office ASAP. clearly this student is not well.
I know this exchange is from the past and not a current situation but I agree with you. A student who is too sad to complete an assignment and demands no consequences, then comments on the submission of an assignment in the manner within the text is showing signs of emotional instability and should at a minimum be flagged to the Dean’s office for tracking and support.
10 points for not using ChatGPT
