I work at a retirement home. I give you - the voting history of a 92 year old man. Love this guy 💀
DiscussionDid this mad last vote Tricky Dick thrice? My father would approve. He likes to joke about how his mother did that.
1960, 1968 and 1972
Tbf everyone was voting for Nixon in 1972
Love showing people that election map. Absolutely insane.
Especially since Nixon was pressured into resigning less than 2 years later. That is a very steep drop-off in popularity.
Which makes the Watergate break in even more insane.
He had the ‘72 election in the bag anyway.
Whiplash warning plz
Interesting he voted for Gore but not for Clinton.
He really appreciated Gore’s invention of the internet
I know that this is a joke, but since there are those who seriously think that he said any such thing:
When asked to describe what distinguished him from his challenger for the Democratic presidential nomination, Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey, Gore replied (in part): "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."
In context, Gore's response (which employed the word "created," not "invented") was clear in meaning: the vice president was not claiming that he "invented" the Internet in the sense of having thought up, designed, or implemented it, but rather asserting that he was one of the visionaries responsible for helping to bring it into being by fostering its development in an economic and legislative sense.
The claim that Gore was actually trying to take credit for the "invention" of the Internet was plainly just derisive political posturing that arose out of a close presidential campaign. If, for example, Dwight Eisenhower had said in the mid-1960s that he, while president, "took the initiative in creating the Interstate Highway System," he would not have been the subject of dozens and dozens of editorials lampooning him for claiming he "invented" the concept of highways or implying that he personally went out and dug ditches across the country to help build the roadway. Everyone would have understood that Eisenhower meant he was a driving force behind the legislation that created the highway system, and this was the very same concept Al Gore was expressing about himself with interview remarks about the Internet.
Nah man. Al Gore grew the internet from a seedling and Bob Chandler, Internet Lumberjack chopped it down.
Is there a big blue ox that fits into this somewhere?
Oh goddamnit.
"Created" is also a poor choice of wording. I would say he helped facilitate the internet, which is still good, but a lot less grandiose than "invented" or "created."
The comment about Eisenhower and the highway system is fair, and shows just how political discourse has degenerated in the US over time. Rule three prevents me from furnishing examples, but I would say that intentionally misunderstanding one's political opponents has become the norm now, on all sides of the political spectrum.
That's not misunderstanding, though. That's intentional misrepresentation. Let's make correcting that the norm, and shaming those who willfully and consciously spread the misinformation.
Don't forget Global Warming?
Looks at world I don't think many people can. It is real and we lost a chance at having a president who would have made it a priority almost 25 years ago.
And Manbearpig
That may have had more to do with his impression of W.
Yet voted for him the second time LMAo
At that point, his approval numbers were still high, and Iraq hadn't quite turned around to bite him in the ass yet. People forget how beloved post-9/11 Bush was. Even SNL took it easy on him for a while.
True.
If only he voted in Florida
Gore HAD ridden the mighty moon worm…
Reagan, Reagan , bush, McCain, Romney… and Al Gore?!
And Carter?
Carter would not be that hard to explain, he was pissed of by the handling of the WaterGate affair.
Guy was a part of the problem. Voted Nixon thrice
So did a lot of people. People knew Nixon as being a politico but they didn’t necessarily think he’d do Watergate.
It's not that complicated. Ford was an unpopular liberal republican and Carter was a popular conservative democrat.
Outside environmental policy Al Gore wasn't very different from George Bush, sharing very similar views at least regarding the military and social security. I would guess that 92yo is an environmentalist, which further explains his vote for Jimmy Carter
Wonder why the Stevenson to Ike vote
I assume a conservative but sometimes swing voter
He says he supported them both equally but when he first voted, thought Stevenson would be right. Guess Ike impressed him.
He saw the pick of Ike sitting and thought “nice,” I’m assuming
Based Swing Voted
I'm guessing since there's no 2016 vote here, we know who he voted for. But would love to see his 2020 vote even more. Very interesting voter history here.
Honestly it feels very unclear. Seems like a conservative who doesn’t automatically vote for the Republican if he doesn’t like him.
In 2016 he did not vote for a woman. In 2020 he voted for that same person.
Plot twist- he wrote someone in
Ban incoming
/s
It's possible he just didn't vote
Or OP is respecting rule 3.
That’s what they’re saying. If he voted for Hillary, it could’ve been put up there, so we know he voted for rule 3.
Or didn't vote at all
That too.
This goes from Maybe conservative to maybe conservative to definitely conservative to okay moderate to okay definitely conservative
Was impressed with Ike's first term, remained a republican for most of his life. Exceptions are Carter because he was disgusted with Watergate, perot because he never liked the two party system, and Gore because... maybe he didn't like the idea of political dynasties?
The fact that he can remember everyone he’s voted for the last 74 years is even more impressive. My dad isn’t even 60 yet and can’t remember past the last 2 or 3 elections lol.
I really want to know about the rule 3 people though. Is there a way u can share that without sharing that?
In another comment, OP said in 2016 they didn’t vote for a woman, and in 2020 they voted for the same person they voted for in 2016
Were there any third-party candidates that meet those criteria?
Sure, but none that get blocked by rule 3
They can dm u.
Is it alright if you tell us which state or states he lived in when he voted in all of these elections? I'm curious to see if his vote actually made a difference to the Electoral College count. (No more personal details than that, though.)
Indiana to my knowledge.
The inclusion of Carter between Nixon and Reagan is an odd choice.
He told me he just didn’t trust Ford due to the Nixon Pardon - he really had a falling out with Tricky Dick 💀
Yes. People now seem to forget how unpopular that pardon was.
I would have
You found the elusive Stevenson/Romney voter
Lol once I got to Goldwater I was like “ok surely no more surprises”
I imagine Carter and Gore were shocking then?
He seems like an independent or republican center right guy, but not very partisan
Gotta be a southerner right?
No. The voting pattern is similar to a lot of the rural Midwest (with occasional exceptions).
Crazy he gave up voting after 2012
Rule 3 man 🤣
I’m 58. Practically mine
Curious about the Goldwater -> Gore voter
When you’re a Republican but you respect anyone who’s ever ridden the Mighty Moon Worm
gold water > Carter > Reagan > gore voter lmao
He's a conservative
Thank God he voted for Perot.
Give him my regards.
I like Ike
Votes against Dubbya the first time
Very nice, very nice.
Votes for Dubbya the second time
Ayo wtf??
I can understand voting for him both times, neither times, and even voting for him the first time but not again but who votes for him only the second time lmao
He claims that he didn’t like Jr prior to the election; but he thought Iraq was going to be ‘successful’. He also thought Jane Fonda and John Kerry were criminals - he’s my favorite senior citizen 💀
Not bad. Republican, but willing to consider the Democratic candidate and vote for them. Well done.
Based 64 vote
What a fun post, I love this Idea... I'm going to work it into my questions with older people. Thank you for sharing!
Didn’t vote for Obama once? Yikes
He voted for Goldwater
That would help explain it lol
Guy seems pretty based
No offense but he seems hog-brained tbh
That’s not nice to say.
With few exceptions, he voted for a bunch of dog-whistling racists throughout his life because the had an R next to their name on the ballot; He wasn't nice with his politics, so I have no obligation to be kind to him (especially considering he won't even see this).
I’m not saying you have to be nice to a senior citizen: I’m just saying it’s not a nice thing to say.
