How did you discover Power Electronics and how have the genre affected you?
That was exactly the way I got into it as well.
I always liked what I heard but didn't know there was a name to the genre (I always assumed it was some form of Noise) util I discover this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3-4BTEEpRY
Saw Consumer Electronics supporting Wolf Eyes. Wasn't a fan until much later but circled it for about 10 years before diving in. The best of the genre actually turned me away from 'pure noise' as I could get my harshness fix elsewhere.
There used to be a DJ who called herself Noiseindex - she put out a number of online mixes combining noise, power electronics, martial industrial, and so on. That's where I first saw names like Anenzephalia and Genocide Organ.
I discovered Power Electronics when I was researching Godflesh and Napalm Death, Justin Boardrick and Nic Bullen said they were a fan of Whitehouse. I looked them up on YouTube and was dumbfounded at first but became more fascinated and then discovering other groups like Sutcliffe Jugend and Ramleh which made me become more interested to the genre.
Broadrick and Bullen did some fuckin' great stuff themselves. Never knew they digged Whitehouse
If you listen to “Streetcleaner” (1989) you can find noise-screeching guitar parts just from being inspired from Whitehouse. The name of the album was named after a track named “Streetclearner” from Whitehouse’s album “Right to Kill” (1983).
By going to noise shows
Found them through the band Human Failure who combined power electronics with punk rock and death metal. It's affected my taste in music quite a bit as I don't really fuck with anything that's not atleast a little bit noisey now.
I was listening to a lot of Gilla Band (formerly Girl Band) and as I was attempting to dive deeper into noise rock, somewhere along the way I discovered pharmakon and I’m glad I did
I remember having her album cover out at a cooking job. The whole beautiful maggots shot. That photo has stuck with me for years. Think I felt personally attacked for my white pantie Fetish long after, and have a bit of a love hate thing for the whole Feminist pretty horror aesthetic detournement thing that's been popular for over s decade. Like nothing makes something so damn appealing as trying to make it obvious I'm supposed to be disgusted when I definitely am not going to be.
I think you should’ve kept some of that to yourself and not on the internet…
I've been searching for that artist name off and on for decades and so I was being appreciative by being too honest and hopefully humorous. The mood has past. I have no regrets. Onwards!
Within each musical style i got into, i tended to dive into its fringes pretty quickly. From goth it was a small step to Throbbing Gristle, Diamanda Galas and early Current 93. After that PE followed directly. I always loved the intensity of the sound and the sheer aggression of the style. Like so many others i ended up making PE myself.
