I would call the landlord on this one. This is some very old stuff, looks like at least the bottom pipe is lead.

There is a big chance that if something breaks there wont be any spare parts.

We are renting a house since November and I'm scared all the time that our sink is gonna get clogged.

I would be leery of doing any work if you're renting.. Even if your landlord gives you a verbal okay to do the work, the terms of the lease you signed could still result in you being held liable for any expenses/damages that result from attempting to upgrade/replace this.

Don’t touch this; unless you have the time and funds. We would need to see the rest of the plumbing to give you any real advice. Is this on first floor is it over a finish or un finished room? What kind of water lines are there? Brass? We need to see the drain line better where it goes through cabinet and below. But if you don’t have experience this is probably a bad idea to tackle yourself. It will be one of those jobs that definitely grows as you go! One more thing ; where is this !? What Country and state ?

We live in Northern Sweden, but we moved here from the Netherlands. It's really hard to find an affordable place to rent if your a foreigner here because lots of people don't speak English. We have a really good relationship with our landlord, and everything that needs to be done will be a win win situation for both parties.

The house we're renting is about a hundred years old. We are not paying for any repairs ourself, but there is an better countertop+sink laying around in the barn which we can use. To put it in, the plumbing needs to be changed. There will be a friend coming over who is a plumber, but we want to know what to prepare for and if it's even doable (on a budget).

This is a little more involved than what I would consider a DIY project. depending on what you're replacing it with, you'll probably have to cut it off back to the hub and then re-plumb it.

To answer your question, the quick method would be to cut the large pipe as near to where it is vertical. This edge should then be deburred and ideally folded over itself to add some rigidity.

Remove that old trap and weigh it in, or give it to a museum 🤣

Once the trap is removed and the waste pipe dressed, the pipe should be rodded to remove any blockages, lastly a rubber bung/grommet pushed into the end to reduce the size of the opening to accept your new plastic pipework and waste traps.

If you cut the big pipe too far down then you will save some space, but you will also potentially expose the bung/grommet to water. This can lead to water migration.

If it's draining slow there appears to be a couple of drain plugs at her knee caps. Might take those out to clear the pipes.

You need a Studor Vent a/k/a Air Admittance Valve

Get rid of that p-trap contraption.

Cut the drain above the 45 where it goes vertical. Use a Fernco/CT connector to add a vertical piece of 1 1/2" PVC with a sanitary tee and put the Studor vent above it, at least equal to the bottom of the sink but higher if you can.

Then run both sinks into 1 p-trap into the sanitary tee.
