I was playing Silo because he uses guns but I just learned that he can equip any weapon.
Do people change weapons on characters? Is it better to stay with their original weapon type or does it even matter?
Yes I’m still pretty new to the game.

Don't knoiw but I find that shooting as the dagger demon lady is pretty good makes you feel like you're playing Risk of Rain.
Valid observation. If you're jumping in blind, then it is hard to figure out. Because of its MMO roots the game does an overall bad job at explaining the systems clearly.
I'd recommend putting your thoughts down and sharing it in the discord. There is a feedback channel for gathering this sort of stuff. There's still time for some QoL stuff in early access so be sure to post there.
Play however you like, I’ve got 500+ hours in the game - truly doesn’t matter, as long as you build a character in a way that fits your play style. I play Kyros for example not with a two-handed scythe, but instead daggers and it goes really well. Same with Venomous.
I started to play Venomous... maybe a melee build can be great. TY for the idea.
Happy to help 😁
Before the echoes update most hardcore Ven players I knew only played her with daggers. She was a beast!
After the echoes update, daggers work well too. All those heals / DOTs in close range. She is mighty lethal 🗡️ ☠️ 🗡️
Kyros with sword and shield can really rack up those orbs with the 2-hit combo finisher. That's what I ended up using, dude is a mad lad brawler if you take heals with his 1 ability and use something like bastion or legacy if even more sustain is needed.
What do you like about daggers with Kyros? Which dagger type is your favorite?
On Kyros, in the current version of the game, I use night’s edge. My main dmg is using rakes and my ult. I’ve got like 14k ability power, and my crit is really high too. So basically I do no weapon dmg. However, when I use that weapon’s ability I am able to get my dmg combo meter up to 250% in just a couple seconds, my weapon ability does tens of thousands of dmg per dagger hit (3 ghost daggers total). So by this point my combo meter is maxed out, I’ve got seven rakes stored, and my ult meter is full. I activate my First echo (increaseing my ability power by X%) and I just dump everything in 15 seconds.
I kid you not, it’s not uncommon for me to 1 shot most mobs, including bosses. Highest crit so far on record is 120K from a single ability. Build is truly bananas. Only problem, is that requires a bit of prep to get everything how I want it. Even when I play with a full group, I’m a glass cannon. Even with healing rakes I can get 1 shot (I have like 2,200 health). But once I get set up, a fight that would take us typically 5-10 minutes will be finished in 30-45 seconds. Sooo they’re happy to play around it 😬
I prefer melee on everyone tbh
So there's a couple factors that can weight a character towards certain weapon types. But in general, if you build towards a certain weapon, you can probably make it work.
Hero powers. A lot of heroes have very short range powers. Other heroes have powers that can work at any range. Of course, you could always build to emphasize weapons so much that you generally ignore hero powers.
A ton of other build choices will determine how you approach each character. In my experience, most characters do very well with sword and shield - I like to create brawler types with high sustain, and every character I've played (haven't played Silo or Grendel yet) can do fairly well, especially if using Bastion whose weapon power is a heal. But those heals might not be needed if playing at range, or countering everything with daggers.
Consider how Silo's Red Feast talent changes how he plays. If he crits, suddenly every hit is healing him. This will then favor fast attack weapons such as sword and shield, dual daggers, and rifles.
Some character kits work better with some weapon types.
Venomess starts out with a ranged weapon, but giving her dual daggers is pretty disgusting.
I'm probably going to give a shotty to the spooky shadow demon girl since she can blink around a lot in closeish range.
I jump around a lot and depending on what character I’m playing, usually a gun or a breaker weapon since they click with me.
You never dreamed of being a shotgun paladin?
The only character I actually use "their weapon" for is Venomess because it actually synergizes pretty well with her.
I dunno why but Niss with guns is killer for me.
Also Senja with Sword and shield is pretty beefy.
I'm going to guess you go very high weapon power, and the abilities are more like escape tools? I've wondered if that would work, seems like it could be legit. What guns do you like on her?
Yes exactly.
Basically rifles. I used to play shotguns but I think they got nerfed.
Yes! because the build depend in your style! But some characters do better with some weapons. The important part is if the damage output is with weapon damage or special damage.
Linear game with no custom character
Play what you like really. I will say that certain wayfinder abilities are better with melee or ranged weapons as they can change depending on the weapon used. I'd experiment and find what you like. Silo's grenades work much better in melee these days.
