Elderly Filipina in San Francisco dies after being shoved into incoming train
NewsPHThere is a real drug problem in US. It is very accessible, and no one is doing something. The homelessness and drug problem is visible in the streets of LA and Bay Area, and it is heart breaking to see it. Kaya be safe sa lahat traveling abroad and OFWs.
San Francisco specifically has a huge problem with homeless, drugs, theft, and other crime. It’s not uncommon for stores to have to keep all of their goods in locked boxes that the workers unlock to give you the items you buy.
Why aren't they at train stations to begin with? Wala bang pera para at least man lang mag hire ng security guards or maglagay ng platform barriers?? Yaman ng US, ganyan pa din?
I can speak for LA and NYC, based on my observation police does not care anymore because they have too much on their plate. I think police in big cities with high crime rates, tend to be selective on what they are prioritizing. That’s why it’s hard to rely on police (especially if you are a person of color).
I think Philippines has more security sa train natin. We have guards, metal detector and all that stuff. Walang ganun dito, I think that is because of “privacy”. I can’t imagine a guard inspecting a passenger bag before they can get inside the train. Baka madaming Karen na mag labasan 🤣
For me, I don’t feel safe living in big city like LA or NYC, lalo na pag babae ka at person of color.
Being labeled as a minority means something there, and usually, it's at your expense.
Plus, with these racial asian hate thing going on, it's far less safe than 10 years ago.
i felt 10x safer in the metro in manila than in NY. there's always the feeling of something is gonna go down plus all the twitchy fucks around you looking like theyre about to tip over or do something crazy. but that was long ago, i have not visited manila for many years now.
the person of color narrative is so bullshit though because if you really believe that and then if it’s true the police force would only contain white officers but it doesn’t it contains a lot of POC. I mean you are right about them being selective on what calls/crimes to take and they’re only doing that because they’re really short on staff.
Color actually drives narratives since you can create statistics about and math it all out to create a logistical approach to reasoning.
For you to think that color is non-factorial to societal ins and outs is baffling. Its like saying pork and chicken are the same because they're meat, period.
Either you've read too much/little or go out some more.
Husband says US is very corrupt, theyre just good at hiding it under legal policies
In nyc, you see nypd in some stations. I cant say the same for bay area.
After ng defund the police, catch and release and making some arrestable crimes so low level than the police and security personel are fucking irdered NOT to give chase and arrest the criminal.
there are metro cops stationed in subways and bus stations but due to their limited numbers they often missed a lot of really important stuff on top of that people really don’t like cops in major cities. Every time the police try to do something against assailants nothing comes of it because at the end of the day the D.A has all the power. The police are tired and do everything they can but it’s an uphill battle for them all the time even the people in power who are suppose to help them often backstabs them.
Even in Canada where I am from in Vancouver, it’s becoming a rampant thing on the west coast, down to our southern neighbours in Washington din.
puro naman short-term yung ginagwa ng gobyerno
Kahit rin ung Balita sa Germany last year ata un. Patay. parang may altercation lng ata dahilan. Dami talaga baliw sa Mundo.
The dude any out of his way to go to Germany to attack Asians like they do in the US. So compassionate.
Drugs.
There is a difference between crazy and just dead inside
You can be crazy by taking drugs, being dead inside need meds or therapy. Or being dead inside makes you crazy.
There is a difference, but bottom line, crazy.
Edit: grammar
a lot of crazy people roam the streets especially in big cities like L.A and N.Y. That’s why their a reason most people have their head on a swivel and are as far away as they can be from the tracks.
Race might have something to do with it. But I agree people are crazy.
meron. Racism
this is probably why lrt/mrt stations in manila have security guards, just to make sure that crazies don't enter the stations.
People being pushed onto the subway tracks happens quite often, unfortunately. Too many unhinged people, not just in NY, but everywhere else. When I took my first train ride, the first thing my husband told me was to not stand too close to the edge of the platform for that very reason.
American here.
One thing i don’t like about metro/subway stations here in the US is that our tracks don’t have gates/dividers unlike most of the MRT stations in Singapore and Jakarta.
Of course I’ve only used the metro trains in four American cities (Chicago, NYC, Atlanta, Miami), but that lack of seems to be the case in all four of them. So anyone…literally anyone in those cities, could even jump to the track on a truth or dare if they want to.
I always try to wait for the train as far away from the tracks as possible, just in case some dumbass teenager on a skateboard accidentally bumps into me and I get pushed into the tracks.
Jakarta's MRT is brand spanking new. It only has 12 stations.
NYC has one of the oldest metro stations in the world. It is also the system with the most stations in the world at 472.
That's the main reason.
The other reasons have to do with how much their countries care about their people, how rich the countries are, and how well founded the organizations that manage the transportation systems are.
Singapore is a rich country that invests heavily in social programs and taking care of its people. It's also a small city state so it's easier to focus money on a smaller area. They also only have 140 stations.
Japanese are obsessed with details and safety as a cultural rule, so Tokyo has a lot of safeguards in many (but not all) stations.
With NYC, it's not just one of the oldest but also:
- It runs 24/7 so it's difficult shut down entire stations for installation
- The entire NYC subway system is 3 different systems that were combined into 1 so the trains aren't uniform in size and door location
- The MTA is corrupt AF lol
The gates in the above ground stations at least in the older red (ns) and green (ew) lines in singapore was only put up within the last 5-10 years if i remember correctly. It was open for decades before - crime rate is low anyway (never heard of pushing in though it mustve happened before) but suicide by train, while uncommon, is a thing.
Hi u/k_elo, if you or someone you know is contemplating suicide, please do not hesitate to talk to someone who may be able to help.

same thing in Australia, that's why it's easy to disrupt the trains. been to HK and they also have dividers for passengers' safety

also no gates in Manila trains too.
People being pushed onto the subway tracks
She was pushed to the moving train it seems, not unto the tracks:
Just clarifying: she was not pushed into the tracks. It’s not better though, but just not as brutal as you’re thinking. The article says she was shoved into a train itself and then knocked back onto the platform. She then died at the hospital from her injuries.
Yes, I read the article. My comment was in direct response to u/Accomplished-Exit-58's comment re NY subways. However, with the context in general, being shoved off the platform/onto the tracks, or being shoved in front of an incoming train, or being shoved into the train all have the same intention: to hurt or kill.
One of my tita’s coworkers in Manila who now lives in NYC got attacked during early pandemic/post lockdown times when the anti Asian racism due to covid was at its peak.
My cousin in California was attacked as well during the peak of Covid. They think it's the fault of Asians why they lost their jobs because of Covid.
With matching pag call out pa sa kulay ng damit pag ayaw talaga sumunod.
Kaya I was wondering bakit walang safety measures sa mga platforms ng MRT/LRT, imagine platform eh punong-puno every rush hour tas kahit sabihin mong may ilang meters na distance dapat from the edge of platform sa simula ng linya eh you never know any eventualities eh. Madalas naiisip ko before eh kung may deranged enough na manulak nang malakas sa isang person right before the train eh they could very much do that and kill.
I guess kahit railings lang would be a very great preventive measure na.
RIP
Corazon Dandan had a very beautiful soul. She helped her family as much as she could (even financing pamangkin's education, who is now a medical doctor). I wish other commenters under this thread could be as respectful as you. 🙏 Justice for Corazon and her family.
Not just here I'm afraid, I saw news articles about her and disgusting comments were also in the cs of those sites (people assuming her opinion on politics, saying that this is her karma/her fault, and she's probably a bad mother and she had this coming etc). The internet is such an awful place sometimes. I genuinely feel bad that the world keep losing such good people and then we have... the rest of the garbage heap. Ffs...
I hope they find justice and the man who did this properly pay for what he's done.
Alam ko sa Cali is one of the most ugliest in terms of applying the law. So makukuha lang nung gagong tumulak sa kanya is few months to years in prison. Its so stupid living there.
man US is such a weird place for a 1st world country
There is a high chance that this is related to the high rate of fentanyl drug addiction plaguing many states in the US, especially in San Francisco. I have a friend living in San Francisco, and she showed me videos of people acting like zombies on the side of the road whenever she visits downtown SF. We have drug issues too in the Philippines, and I live in a mixed-class neighborhood (low-middle), but I've never seen anything like that here.
This is spot on. SF has a huge homeless population and many of them are addicted to drugs. Many (most) of them are people with mental health disorders that are completely untreated. While this problem is found in most American cities, it is much much worst on the west coast. San Diego, LA, SF Bay Area, Portland and Seattle all have HUGE homeless populations.
Yes. New York is also not great.
School Shooting -> (Unlikely, but an example) No more guns! -> Homemade bombs -> No more chemicals! -> Vehicular manslaughter -> No more cars......etc..
Baliw sa US mga nasobrahan sa drugs or di kaya may galit sa Mundo. 🤣
Have you been to squatters in Caloocan, Tondo, and Binondo? Maraming ganyan doon.
Take away the guns, people start resorting to knives (has happened in the UK, Japan, China, etc)
Even with all things equal, those countries still have lower knife crimes than the US. US-ians are just straight up retarded.
True. Just wanted to reinforce what you said, that people will find a way to kill other people if guns are not an option, by providing an actual example of what (insane) people do if they have no guns
Parang ibang-ibang lugar na yung USA mula sa kung paano ko ito nalaman at narinig nung bata ako and that's just aroudn 20 years ago.
Bum got twelve arrest records from 2014 to 2023. Wherein five of those are committed on the exact same station. Crazy.
but still on the streets? krazy
I remember yung Filipino naman sa subway new York hiniwa yung mukha during pandemic yun. Pero mabuti at buhay yung pinoy. Dito din sa states where I live Ang Dami din homeless meth head lalo na sa city.
This happened to a pinay in NYC years ago too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1owxTXH_z4
And another recent one (victim is also Asian): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWrsJ8A4bvk
The most common victims: Asian women.
The surprising amount of deaths and injuries from violence/hate crimes on Asians are often pinoys (usually middle age +) despite very low Fil-Am pop. in the whole of US.
Filipino-Americans are actually the second biggest Asian-American group in the US (3.41 million)
Wish there were more. Yall are awesome.
I'm well aware.
But there's 300 million Americans, there's 4.5 million Fil-Americans, that's around .6% total.
Previous data (NYC, time span 1990-2003 per Gershon et. al, so we can't assume everything is exactly the same in the last 10 years and spanning the whole of US), 10 subway deaths were murders. If we assume the same today, at least 2/10 (3/10 for Asian women in general) being pinays as the victims, that's a VERY significant representation in a very niche statistic.
most common suspects: alam na
This subreddit loves to be thinly veiled racists.
Is it racism when the perpetrators ARE black? No. It's just pointing out the obvious.
Bakit laging race pointed out? There's never a "gotcha" moment on men (who commit more crimes compared to women) or young (who commit more crimes than the old). But people will be quick to generalise and mock the race as a whole.
"Never a gotcha moment on men?" Huh?
Now ask youself why.
So sad. I remember when I lived in NYC, this kind of thing happened more often than anyone wants to admit. I’m so sorry for this poor woman. America is not what you see in the movies. I urge all Filipinos to reconsider moving there. (I am an American and I’m desperately trying to leave.)
Their government are neglecting their citizens, kaya maraming crimes, homelessness and drug addicts
Youre talking about the PH i presume.
Truly sickening that an elderly person, still working no less, should be murdered like this. Parts of downtowns in cities in the USA have been turned into open air mental institutions where the inmates just do as they please. I see then around Penn Station in New York - acting out in all kinds of ways with zero consequences. One guy just plops down in the middle of a busy sidewalk on 34th Street with a sign asking for money. People going to and from work just walk around him and ignore the absurdity.
The USA is such a rich country, but on the one side, people of means do not want to pay taxes to fund institutionalizing and caring for criminals and the mentally ill, and on the other side, folks with an extreme liberal agenda oppose cash bail and jail time for violent criminals, and taking away individual freedom by institutionalizing people who clearly should be separated from society, so dangerous people like this grow bolder by the day knowing they have free rein and will suffer few consequences for their actions unless, maybe somebody dies. John Q. Public and other working folks like this poor woman are caught in the middle.
The U.S. is not a rich country. It was only made so and so, because this country is a billionaire’s playground. They don’t give a fuck about us regular people except for the fact that we provide labor.
And this is why Im having second thoughts on moving to the US. My wife has juz passed her NCLEX for NY license, but I keep telling her lets give it time since were already pretty comfy here in the UK. Main reason for my concern is no universal healthcare, unlike the NHS we have here, second is this shit! I got 2 kids, little girls! And to think Ill be sending them to school there where they would have do drills juz in case of school shooting, that's fucked up! There's none of that shit here in the UK, racism is very minimal. The only good thing about the US is their pay for the nurses, if you wanna earn a lotta dough, US is the place to be.
The violence in the US really depends on where you live. It's a very huge place and these kinda things don't happen everywhere all the time. I grew up and live in the US and I've rarely ever seen violence and I lived in Philadelphia as a kid and still work in and around there. I've even done jobs in Kensington which is the worst area in America for drugs and I've never actually seen violence. The media is pretty over dramatic about the violence here and makes it seem like it's a regular things in everyday life which simply isn't true. It all really comes down to being in a bad place at the wrong time and not having situational awareness. If you stay away from known bad areas you typically will never have to worry and if you have to go to bad areas just don't make yourself a target by looking like you can be taken advantage of. The Healthcare is expensive though and I wish the government would do something about it but they won't since they get money from insurance companies to not do something about it.
Also if you plan on moving to NYC it's very expensive to live in and around the city, a lot of people move to Philadelphia and commute to work in New York since Philadelphia is that much cheaper to live in. The Philadelphia area is expensive as well but there's a lot of nice and safe areas to live. I'm in the greater Philadelphia area and love it here, I actually in the past never used to lock my doors at night and kept the keys in my car.
Healthcare and tax code in US is Complex... No Universal healthcare but most likely Nurses can get Pre-Tax insurance Plan from the employer. Pre-Tax deductions can lower your taxable federal income. If you spend out of pocket money from hospitalization then you can claim your bill for Tax deductions. Since you have 2 kids, you can get extra refund at the end of the year. I think you can get atleast $5-10k refund every year if you have dependents depending on Salary.
in regards with safety, well that depends where you live. there is no way a ghetto area is considered safe to live.
If you guys were to move here for your wife’s nursing go to C.A we have the strictest labor laws out of the 50 states. Yes we don’t have universal healthcare but your wife’s hospital should cover that and family members usually get the best treatment(their is also a reason one of the royal family members chose to be treated in Houston,Texas). As of the school shootings it’s not really that big of a problem as the media portrays it to be, it still does happen but its not something you should be worried about on a daily basis. Now for the racism it’ll depend on where you are but it’s not something you will experience everyday. I grew up here and only experienced racism a handful of times. ( in N.M and Florida)
Thats what she was planning to do, coz her mom lives somewhere on LA, and is somewhat the reason why she took the exam and plan to move there. But we do have choices coz one of her brothers is in Jacksonville FL (wife also a nurse) and the other is in Houston (navy). So its either in CA or in FL, IF we ever do decide to move.
Do remember the existence of confirmation bias. Dont let constant bad news on social media cloud your decision making.
Ano yon, trip trip lang nya? Daming 6a60 talaga sa mundo. I hope Justice will be served!
Public Transportation in California is so perilous. Having a car there is a must. If you have no access to one, better use Uber.
it depends on what area you live in lol. I could bike to my work place/restaurants/shops and other places. I do prefer driving though because of the weather
Trevor belmont like Castlevania? Hoak Taing the brother or Hawk Tueh?
WHAT THE FUCK????
Lemme guess who did it, the melanated compassionate? They've been the one attacking Asians during lockdown. It was so prevalent they started blurring the criminals' faces.
Frankly, I feel safer in Quiapo than in San Francisco. Too many drug addled people walking around in SFO and they’re aggressive too.
Kakaiba talaga racism sa US. I think last year din, si Karen Fukuhara (Kimiko from The Boys) randomly bigla na lang may nanghataw sa ulo nya sa restaurant ata yun.
Rip Lola, your family will never forget your love
Let me guess, the guy who pushed her is black
Ang sakit sa puso makabasa ng ganito :((
Funny how the suspect name is exactly the name of castlevania’s protagonist, Trevor belmont
The real Trevor would never
Now I see this. Damn.
name ng tumulak is trevor belmont (character from castlevania, hoak something yung real name) dami tlaga weirdo sa america
Are you sure? Di ba real name muna sinusulat then the alias. Di lang naman yung character sa castlevania are may ganung name, may mga (real) tao na same ang name.
baka dahil nanaman sa racism yan..
I'm happy that the comments have since improved since I last visited. Kadiri yung iba na parang nagdefault sa racial profiling and racism.
Like, seriously motherfuckers, get back to your cave.
Downfall of western society started with the:
“B LiVeS mATTer” movement
What came next:
Looting
Increase in crime
Accepting illegal immigrants which resulted to more crime , rape, and more
Downfall of europe
I’m from the Bay Area too and this is the unfortunate truth about how it’s like living in the US. Not too long ago, two elderly Filipino workers were randomly attacked by some lowlife too:
https://www.ktvu.com/news/2-elderly-asian-men-attacked-in-san-francisco.amp
That guy is not homeless, doesn’t seem like he’s even on drugs. To me it’s just pure hate. We can talk about politics all day and how bad is the policy when it comes to hate crimes. But you know what I think also plays a role here? At least in San Francisco, most people are secular—they’re religiously unaffiliated. They don’t believe in any higher power, no values of any kind, whatsoever.
My coworkers and I always talk about this since we’re all Asians. We all share similar values when it comes to care and respect for others especially with the elders. So we couldn’t wrap our head around how people could do these random attacks.
It’s disheartening how crimes have been normalized here. This is not what a first world country is supposed to be. Example, Has it ever happened in the Philippines that shopping malls or grocery stores are getting looted in broad daylight? I don’t think so. Only here in the US!
It looks like you shared an AMP link. These should load faster, but AMP is controversial because of concerns over privacy and the Open Web .

Did they identify the race of the suspect? Won't be surprised if it's a black guy doing the usual violence against asians
it always the crackhead nighters and radnecks
One of the reasons I don't consider US as a country that I want to migrate into. Especially mukha talaga kong east Asian huhuhu. Aside from the bad health care system, racism is totally on a whole new level. And the perpetrators are usually the crazy and homeless.
San Francisco is a Democrat-run state. Vote for Biden and his crooked Democrats pa more!
Yep
Sucks that there’s no outcry in the media. Asian lives matter too
The guy used trevor belmont as an alias (yung bids sa castlevania) pero apparently asian yung suspect. Parang chinese, if not chinese then viet
Tell us you didn’t read the article without telling us you didn’t read the article 🤦🏽♂️IGNORANT MF 👎🏽
Wrong question to ask in this side of Reddit, Asian lives/Filipino lives matter is racist 🤷🏼
So white republicans? lol
You're a denizen of both r/Catholicism and r/Conservative. It figures.
Sobrang shithole paminsan ng r/Catholicism. Like ibang-iba yung brand ng Katolisismo sa America vs sa atin, and the rest of the world
Parang American Gods lang yan White Jesus is all about guns. Korean Jesus best Jesus tho.
So what I am a denizen of the conservative and Catholic movement. Yes I am fiscally conservative but I also believe in progressive ideals of healthcare (universal) and environmental justice. Civil union between same sex is fine with me as long as it doesn’t intrude the religious beliefs of others. Perpetual victimization aint a solution but meritocracy is the way moving forward. Buddy, political beliefs isn’t always black and white. However, one thing I dont tolerate is nazism, socialism and communism! You’re not truly woke if you only tolerate people who have the same beliefs as you.
Btw, like you I hate Duterte and Marcos to the guts but in American politics I support Trump, Andrew Yang, and Democrats JFK and prior. Btw RBG was one of the best justices ever.
Ingat mga kababayan. Marami siraulo sa Democrat states.
Masama ang lahat ng dayuhan. Dapat natin maging mas-alerto sa kanila. Lalo na ng Puti, Intsik at Itim (na Amerikano)
Puti - See Peter Scully and his crimes; Fuck this bastard I wish he'd be hanged. Masmarami pang Puti na katulad niya
Intsik - POGO, sigurong kalaban pag nagkagiyera
(Racism logic)
Lahat din ng pinoy masama,
Ikaw rin ang kasama diyan.
What a sad life you have.
They weren’t hugged much as a child.
Bumalik ka sa bansa mo dayuhan ka
(xenophobia + racism)^2
It's true that Filipinos are not racist enough. See how ridiculously "welcoming" we are because we want to gain approval from foreigners.
It's so dumb. I am simply going the opposite way. I can only hope that other Filipinos will see the truth about how badly we are treated by them and return the favor too.
Racist much? 🤦🏽♂️
Not racist enough
or some rednecks
Don't live in a city...move to a small town if your gonna live in the usa especially stay away from democratic controlled states/ city's move to a red- republican state much safer
Isn't the murder rate in many red states even higher when you consider their population size?
No
"It's just a prank, bro"
The prank:
Something funny?
What the fuck
wtf, fucking crazy people at public transpos.
Last week, had to give tips to a nurse planning to go abroad about random shit like this, crazy people, starting fights out of nowhere and doing random stupidity. Now this.
I would not be surprised kung walang motive yan.
