Hi, I was asked to take a drug test in a state where cannabis is legal.

I was not expecting this, since I’ve read that federal regulations are relaxing, and it’s a seasonal aide position. I have smoked once but recently in the past 30 days… should I disclose? Is it over for me? Is there a time limit to complete the test, is it possible to buy more time?

I really wanted this job more than anything. I am not a heavy drug user whatsoever, and am ok to never smoke again in my life.

Advice is appreciated.

It’s better to take the test, let the results come in and see what happens. If you pee “dirty” there is still a chance your supervisor can clear you conditionally, like pee again in thirty days. If you were asked on a form or during an interview and were honest it helps, if you lied you’re toast. Don’t disclose, but don’t deny.

Get in the sauna, do high intensity cardio daily, hydrate as much as you safely can. Schedule the test for late afternoon, the first piss of the day is the most likely to test positive if you have anything left in your system. Day of the test hydrate, take a multivitamin and you should be good to go. I work for the Feds and am a heavy user and have been able to pass multiple tests in under 5 days notice. I’ve your really nervous get an at home test from Walgreens for peace of mind.

If you hydrate too much your pee may be too diluted and they’ll ask to test again. More time for you

I was asked to do a drug test for USDA and apparently it was too diluted, so I was made to retest. *However* the follow up test was the next day.

If I remember correctly, I got an email saying I had 24 hours from the receipt of the email to report to [place] to give a sample.

You will laugh at the answer. I didn't take my "pre-employment" drug test until I had been physically on the job (and been given multiple firearms) for eight months.

Buy fake piss. I’ve done this for lots of drug tests for employment it works fine.

Everyone says “oh they can tell” yeah if you bought expired fake piss from 7 years ago, sure. If you buy modern fake piss, it’s incredibly easy to stay ahead of innovations in drug testing because they aren’t a secret and take ages to work their way into the beaurocratic systems that define procedure in these cases

Do not volunteer the info. If it was only a small amount and closer to a month ago just go sweat for a day or two and you should be fine! But do keep in mind that it is still federally illegal so it really doesn’t matter if it’s recreationally legal in a states view - feds trump those state laws.

You can get a thc urine test from Walmart or Walgreens to see if it is out of your system! It may give you peace of mind, I have been in a similar spot. Good luck!

As a person of Finnish decent, a sauna of 150 F or higher for 20 minutes with a 10 minute break between steams does a good job. Follow up with lots of water afterwards. Do it every other day. Below 150 is just a sweaty room.

How many steams is safe in a day? I’m doing one in morning and night for now… with “sweaty rooms” in between (and so much water 🫠)

I'm 69 and have problems because I had a severe case of Lyme back in 13-14. I can tolerate about an hour so about 2 or 3 steams. Many of my relatives sauna every day. When we are at the cabin on Lake Superior the rest of the family will sauna and swim in the lake for hours.

My preference is for the sauna to be 150 to 180 F. Some relatives and friends prefer 180 to 200.

The was a long term study done in Finland where they followed men over many years comparing the rate of heart attacks and how often they took saunas. Those who took saunas often had lower rates of heart attacks. The more saunas in a week the lower the rate of heart attacks.

In the United States you will see warnings about that sauna might cause a heart attack. This is true if you don't regularly take a sauna as it stresses the circulatory system. Just like shoveling snow kills people who don't regularly do physical work.

Do what the top comment says, and additionally, if you don’t want to get flagged for failing- drink a large Gatorade with an entire pack of certo jelly in it.

It’s not 100% fool proof but if you’re very well hydrated, as in you’ve been drinking 1500mL (a large nalgene) of water everyday for a 3-4 days before testing, have already peed a couple times prior to the test, and drink that Gatorade mixture your urine should be diluted enough that THC won’t show above 15 ng, which is the cutoff for most federal agencies. The Gatorade mix just helps it not test diluted and you won’t be flagged to retest.

But whatever you do, don’t divulge the information. That can hurt your chances in the future. If you fail, just tell them that you used your friends vape and didn’t realize it had THC in it, and that your friend didn’t object because they had no idea you were applying for jobs that tested. It actually happens and intent to use narcotics is usually the reason that federal jobs are wary of it, if it’s an accident they are less likely to make it an issue if you check the other boxes. But that’s plan B and only if you have no options left.

How the Gatorade mix helps it not test diluted, specifically… I’m thinking it can’t be a sugar-free one, in case there’s something beyond the electrolytes that the mix helps with.

I honestly can’t tell you how it works from a science standpoint, and I personally never needed to test it, so I never looked too deep into how it worked.

But I worked for the fed in a legal state with plenty of people that swore by it that were surprisingly open about being habitual users- and part of my job was to process paperwork for test failures, never saw their names once, and they weren’t privy to knowing random test times so it wasn’t likely that they got their system clean prior. I didn’t work in a lab though, so maybe it was pure luck they weren’t caught, and it wasn’t my job to test them, so if they didn’t fail, then I wasn’t starting any paperwork.

Good luck though, I’ll be keeping you in my thoughts! I really hope you get the job and that it gets your foot in the door for future opportunities!

Oh thank you so much, it’s reassuring to hear it from someone who sees it unfold in real life! I feel crazy to even wish for a negative result after having smoked so soon. This makes me a little less hopeless.

In this case, I’ll definitely try this method. It can’t hurt. I’m trying a few other things in tandem, hopefully it works out or at the very least I get an opportunity to test again after a period. Appreciate the well wishes 🙏🙏🙏

It says they’d test for controlled substances in accordance to the city’s substance policy (which it is legal in, so I had no idea federal requirements would be applied.)

Then double checked a few times, all I could find were recent articles about how federal employees will no longer be required to not have prior cannabis use. I should’ve been extra prudent, I have been wanting this position for a long time. Had no idea it would be this stringent. Actually had a date on my calendar for when it would be safe to apply to federal roles…

Do you know that they specifically testing you for cannabis? A lot of states/cities still do drug tests but exclude cannabis if it’s legal in that area. So they’d just be testing for things like opioids and cocaine.

I’d go to a drug store and buy thc pee tests. It will give you peace of mind either way and what you need to do. If you’ve used once in the last 30 days I’d say you are probably 100% fine.

Do you know for sure if it’s a urinalysis? Cheek swabs have been gaining in popularity in legal states (not sure about state gov) If it’s a cheek swab and you haven’t smoked in 48-72 hours you’re in the clear.

Have a friend call HR anonymously and ask about what they test for and what method they use. Easy. They are interested in applying but use cannabis recreationally, calling to ask if that would be an issue, not linked to you at all. Just go to the source for the info you need.

Hair apparently takes 90 days, urine can take up to 30 😭

By not disclose, do you mean not volunteer the info, or lie about it?

Not comfortable lying outright, but it doesn’t seem like I have a chance either way if they urine test. But I am really praying that I’m wrong

It is not whatsoever. Is there any way to show that, after having misunderstood the guidelines, or do you suggest I cut my losses? I really want this, and strive to prove that I am serious and that cannabis is not a priority in my life one bit.

Straight answer is no. Each hiring manager is different and they can be understanding or not. The only thing you can do is hope for the best. That's if you've smoked with the last 15-30 days. If it's longer than that, you're really over thinking it and this entire post was for nothing.

It was less than that timeframe, but I’m not a frequent smoker, so I’m hoping it’ll leave my system by testing time.
