I just played a game and had way more damage than anyone in my team and my dps said that i was braindead and had no impact, how does this make sense?
How good do you need to be to not be called bad by your team as a tank?
News & DiscussionI came from console and played inverted so I made my W key backward and forward key D.
Without a replay it's hard to tell. Through as a tank and supports main alot of dps are useless and projet
So… it is quite clear to me when the other tank is better than me, and where the difference is so big that it impacts whether we win or no (it’s not always like that). This also factors in especially if my support and dps are also better than the enemy team. In these situations I usually compliments the opposing tank well played and tell him that s/he was better than me. No need to flame each other.
It's easier to blame teammates than it is to admit you could have done more, this is the overwatch way.
I will mention high damage doesn't mean anything though, especially if you're playing someone like Mauga.
Having a load of dmg doesn't mean you did smthn. You can get high dmg and still have low kills. And even higher deaths.
I'm not a tank main so I can't give u a lot of tank advice but you have to make space and push and be the front of your team when necessary. If ur just charging in alone, getting some dmg in and then dying or just standing in the back shooting from a distance, than you aren't doing much.
But idk how you played so at the end of the day no matter how well or bad you played. If u lost someone else will try to blame u rather than themselves lol
You've started off your reply very poorly.
All Scoreboard stats are worthless and none of them indicate whether you are likely to win or lose an Overwatch game.
I have won plenty of games going omega k/d negative as Tank, and also lost plenty of games going +30/<3 k/d.
DVa, Moira, and Ashe (Every single hero has a similar story), for example, can obnoxiously inflate their stats while providing negative value to their teams.
Eliminations are based on any level of participation, no matter how small; this means that a Dva shooting an enemy from 100m away and dealing <1 damage will receive elimination credit if their team kills that enemy.
Moira has extremely consistent/constant damage that is very low. If you were to DPS only as Zenyatta, Lucio, Ana, Baptiste, Illari, or any other non-support hero, then you would eliminate them faster. Because there is ample time for the enemy team to react, this results in both the inflation of the enemy team's healing stats, and the damage stat of the Moira. Because Damage orb is AOE, any eliminations by any of the team are very likely to also count Moira.
Ashe can farm high damage values via dynamite on grouped up teams. Due to the nature of Damage-Over-Time, this will also inflate the enemy team's healing numbers or result in Ashe receiving credit for any eliminations by her team.
Healing in general is over-inflated with self-healing which doesn't represent any value given to the team, and therefore winning the game.
Standing still and holding a barrier up, or using a barrier off cooldown, all farms damage mitigation; which is a very poor stat to track regardless.
Tank, much like every role, isn't represented on the scoreboard. Your responsibilities are:
- Peeling
- Isolating
- Contesting
- Holding Advantageous Positions.
Every game is heavily context dependent, and you need to keep a close eye on your team. Despite everyone and their mother damning communication in this game, you still need teamwork. Find where is the weakest link in your team and then adapt to strengthen it. You don't need to peel if your DPS peel instead; you don't need to contest high ground if your team can path to avoid it; you DO need to displace the enemy team from advantageous positions regardless of whether your team uses them or not.
Engage together as a team; dying all at once is far better than staggering, and forcing a 2v4 into a 3v4 is more likely to win than otherwise. This doesn't mean you go in alone thinking your team should be engaging with you; they won't.
I aint reading allat
There's plenty of resources out there to help you understand how to play and win Overwatch. It's your decision to be ignorant or not.
do you want me to read your essay
No. It's there for people who actually want to play and "get good" at Overwatch. Idc whether the original poster reads it or not.
did you actually write all that tho
(thank you btw)
Yes, I wrote it all. You're welcome.
could I ask you for some advice in dms?
If you play doom or ball expect to be flamed even if you're doing well- people hate playing with them. If not, hard carry ig. I'm a tank main and even on wins there's still some asshole who types tank diff before the match is even over.
I was watching Emongg on stream, a top 500 who’s been way up at the pinnacle of the leaderboards and one of the nicest players in the game, and he was getting trashed by a teammate.
It’s just garbage people. Ignore them, mute, and move on.

If you play hamster or doom then you need to be super good, but if you play some shield hero, just by blocking ults you wont be called bad
You need to win. If your team is generally good and working together, that bar isn’t too high. If that means hard carrying two DPS that auto-run at the enemy spawn with a disconnected mouse and two healers who spend the whole games going on flanks, the bar is very high.
I had a dude EXPLODE on me on healer when I asked the team to group up. The usual “no heals” shit. I countered by pointing out it’s a little difficult to heal when he’s only engaging while the healers are dead. He got angrier about it, but the other support on our team pointed out that I had more healing than the entire enemy team combined, so “no heals” was objectively incorrect.
“You’re bad” means nothing in Overwatch, because you have to fall back and puzzle out if they’re just projecting their own shortcomings or legitimately criticizing you.
Stop caring about that. No matter how good you are people will always find a reason to blame you. I had a game not too long ago where I was called trash and throwing by my Junkrat. He finished the game 18-13, I did 38-12. Play with friends or mute vc & hide text chat.
Make space don't feed.
That’s the problem so many people focus on the score board way too much. I got the highest damage so I was the best on the team as a support player I just wanna ask some questions. How was your positioning? Were you working together as a team or were you running in 5v1? Were you grouping up as a team after a lost fight and were you just running in and feeding the enemy ult charge? Were you using up all the supports resources and they had to focus on keeping you alive? Were you able to make space so your dps was able to do their job? Were you able to protect your support and peel for them? There’s a lot more to tank than getting the most damage.
DMG isn't everything, can't say anything much without context there.
That being said it's OW, everyone seems to want to blame someone. I just had a tank game the other day I was 40-13 at the time and hard carrying a pretty close match. I had roughly same DMG as their tank, 2 more deaths and 9 more elims, we just finished defense and our support decided to rage at me. His DPS duo was 25-12 at this point. When I told him off he decided to go in all chat and rage about me, even the enemy team defended me. Just another day in OW baby.
Don’t play Overwatch and you won’t be called bad. That’s the only solution. Nothing else you do or say will help.
By itself, having high damage as a tank doesn't mean much. It's way more impactful if you have lots of damage mitigated as that means the supports didn't have to heal as much, and that the DPS could stay up longer to do more damage. If DPS damage is low and they're dying a lot, the tank might not be blocking enough damage.
You dont need to be good. As long as you keep switching to the correct heroes then you will look like you have a lot of impact.
Jokes aside i dunno. People have different expectations of how a tank should play. Dps want the tank to push in while supports want the tank to play safe. Just do your best.
Dmg is useless
If you solo carry the entire match and dominate it all you did the "expected" amount of stuff.
If you play even slightly badly and make a single tiny mistake that didn't even result in anything major like someone dying your team will call you out of throwing.
Tank is a very thankless role where you are expected to do amazing and when you do no one praises you for it because that was the basic expectations people have towards tanks.
Yes and no. A tank is a dps that can afford to run directly into a team to kill supports. You don’t have to path a flank, do it enough times and your team will realize the mission and follow you. Essentially your playing past the other tank and not letting the enemy tank deny you your ultimate goal of picking supports or a pocketed hitscan / widow. Regular Dps have passive so they can kill the tank once you cause disarray in back and mid line. All that to say you should be comparing yourself to them in how many picks you can get per team fight, but your way of doing it is different.
Ignore the chat is the 2nd name of Overwatch. Unless of course someone is giving You actual construtive criticism which will happen maybe once in a blue moon.
Another point to make is that stats are not telling the whole story. Lets say You have 20k dmg as junkrat but it does not convert to any kills which means that opposing team healers are farming ults based on Your trash damage. Lets say You have 0 deaths as a tank but it is only because two supports are 100% focused on keeping You alive which also means that rest of the team gets 0 healing.
OW is toxic. Embrace it.
Maybe you're using braindead tank like Mauga, Orisa or Zarya
i was using ram
People seem to like when tank "presses W"
