I think it is guitars. Sorceress plays in standard tuning with the E string dropped to A. The other B9 songs are in Drop D, so to go from Sorceress to the other songs with the same guitar you'd only need to tune the E string from A to D or the other way around
Look at this video from Wacken at 42:23 you can see the marking on the back of Mikaels guitar: https://youtu.be/aRhfmbV3c7Q?si=33_u8x8iHoEdoDLT
Yeah I was thinking guitar swaps makes sense, I think Mikael swaps more often with different guitars each time but Freddie uses the same guitars more often I think so the swaps seem about right for him.
he other B9 songs are in Drop D
The other B9 songs aren't all drop D; "Cusp", "Heir", "in My", "Face", and "Deliverance" are all standard
gotta be something else
Thanks for this. A question to ask him, if I'm ever lucky enough.
Could you share an example of some of these number-comma combinations?
Sure....
X8. SWARM. 6, 7, 6, 8, 6
02 COMBUSTION. 2,5
RATIONAL GAZE. 1,5
OBZEN. 7, 8, 7,9
LETHARGICA. 1,4
DO NOT LOOK D. 1, 3, 5
THE HURT... 1, 2, 3
I AM COLOSSUS. 1, 5, 2
BLEED. 1, 5, 4
DEMIURGE. 1,5
NEW MILLENNIUM.. 1, 5
CATCH 33. 1, 5, 3, 2
Meshuggah put in their setlists whether the last note of the song is sustained, or cut short. That could be it! On the Immutable setlist they used Nyp(for final note being cut off) and utslag( for final note being sustained).
Did he use a modeller or an amp? Maybe it's preset numbers at the pedalboard.
That’s what I thought as well but In My Time of Need can’t have the same tone as the heavier songs
Some effects processors use the term “bank” for a preset of effects. Maybe that?
This seems like the most sensible response to me. He won't need to look at his setlist to know what guitar to use, his tech will just hand it to him (and the tech's setlist would have the guitars on it for each song).
The only reason that this confuses me a bit is why set up your live rig so that your primary sound is B9 and not B1. I'm sure there is a reason.
Anyone know what his live rig is and what effects processors he uses?
That setlist is pure Gold/Fire. Wow.
It is a thing of beauty! They played half of Cusp Of Eternity and went straight into Heir Apparent in the middle of it. Mendez looked so happy to be playing metal, lol. All of them seemed to be in such good form and enjoyjng rocking out.
wow nothing from ICV?
Right? I haven't seen them since their Sorceress tour, and it would be such a bummer to not hear anything from ICV. At the same, it is an Opeth show, so gonna be a good time.
Why is there an "A" in Demon of the Fall?
The B-x numbering must be pre-amp presets. The only thing that songs with the same numbers share is their guitars' overall "feel".
The B can’t be it, since “Sorceress” is in A-A-D-G-B-E.
Maybe what guitar he's using?
That makes sense. Cheers.
It can’t be. Sorceress and deliverance are separate tunings.
It’s just one string which he can tune it right before the song. Although, it’s a pretty big change for that one string and could even cause some buzzing if the guitar’s not set up properly. Who knows
Can't be, Demon of the fall, Heir Apparent, Ghost of perdition and sorceress all have different tunings.
Fantastic setlist, did Michael fell in love with growling again? lol.
Interesting observation but I think he did. I'm gonna call it now and I could be wrong but I won't be surprised if the new album has some heavier, nostalgic Opeth elements to it - including growling.
I was on the fence about going to see them in a few months, but my (adult) kids talked me into going with them. I've seen them many times over the last 20 something years, but I thought the last couple of times were perhaps a bit underwhelming. However, if we get a similar setlist as shown above I will be happy.
Do it!
Yeah we got tickets for the LA show
Damn what a playlist. Heir Apparent, Face of Melinda, The Grand Conjuration. Yes please.
Also, knowing that Opeth songs are ten minutes long on average, wouldn’t that be at least two hours? I’m not complaining though, since I just got back from a concert that was almost three hours.
I'm absolutely clueless, i dont see how it would relate to tuning
Holy shit what a setlist! I'm so jealous
Signals for the dancers where to begun.
Haha! B stands for Boogie.
Wonderful relic!!
Try on r/metalmusicians maybe?
They only played older tunes at Tuska as well. I was extremely surprised by that. Sadly the set was only an hour or so, but still the best show this year by far.
its the guitars they use
I have the answer for you. It's which guitar effects bank he uses.
IIRC he uses a loop switcher for his effects, it should be the MusicomLab EFX-LE As other guys said, B probably stands for Bank My 2 cents EDIT: Ghost of Perdition probably requires 2 banks since Fred looper only allow for 4 presets (or 5, if you use the 5th button for a preset instead of tap tempo). Should be something like: Acoustic (piezo pickup) Clean electric (very beginning of the song) Distorted rhythm Distorted lead Distorted rhythm + acoustic (during Mike's solo)
Something like that, he probably uses some other preset with some pedal I'm not aware of ATM
Still my 2 cents
Excellent 2 cents. You're not the only person to say this and you given a supurb explanation. I think you could be right.
I will add to this:
Check out this video, starting 6:17 is Fred's pedalboard. Not only I dissected this video a couple years ago but I got my hands on a MusicomLab EFX-LE II along with a Laney VH100R, an Electro Harmonix Small Stone Nano (one of Mike's favorites) and tried to replicate their sound and gear. I'm pretty happy with the result, not much Fred based sound wise (I'm more of a BWP sound guy) but definitely kudos to Reverb for that video, I chose the loop switcher based on this, highly recommended!
I would die to listen Face of Melinda live. Too bad they didn’t played it in Oslo last week.
No idea but that setlist is stacked.
Absolutely stacked. I took a friend who wasn't an Opeth fan and through out the whole night I was like no way, another heavy one. She hadn't a clue what was going on, haha.
Dang , they really need to play some different stuff. Same songs all the time
Definitely not tuning... Demon of the fall and sorceresses can't have the same notation... Could be anything ... Lights, backing track etc.
I have a meshuggah setlist i grabbed in 2015.... That one has numbers separated by commas for every song... Haven't ever been able to figure that out as well...
