so let me start by saying i know bloodworms are expensive, but i just paid $25 for 6 bloodworms. seems like they went up a lot, is that crazy or normal??
Super high.
Unless jumbos
Even still that's high. Personally I'm over buying them. Tired of getting a "dozen" regulars at 25$ to find that two of them sucked the life out of the other ten and have turned them to mush or emaciated to the point they're smaller than an earthworm I found under a rock.
I even looked into trying to source them from Maine and distrute myself and it's not the easiest thing to break into as far as sourcing goes, and the prices and shipping make it so youre hardly profiting on the damn things, and theyve got a short shelf life and require cold storage.
I swear there are a select few blood worm fat cats out there running the whole thing.
I don’t use them either. Hot water I use fishbites.
I know there’s harvesting and supply limitations driving up the prices.
It’s one of those things that I’ll buy maybe once a year, but it’s also something I know I wouldn’t harvest them myselves. It’s hard work.
I can “make bait” much easier with other methods.
how do you rig fishbites? ive been using them on every trip out of convenience and never getting anything, typically end up switching to sand fleas or lures and at least getting hits
Small cuts. Blood worms I do in like less then an inch strips in size 4 (not 4/0) pieces. Sometimes I’ll add a live flea on there, again small.
Sandflea fishbits I’ll cut into triangle pieces smaller then my thumb nail, sometimes add live flea, etc.
Small pieces, small hooks, lots of summer “panfish” in the surf.
Huh will give that a shot, what rig are you using? do you have floats on ?
I tie my own hi lo rigs with size 4 or smaller circle hooks. You can buy premade from a local tackle shop. Don’t buy the metal ones they sell. Get hand ride rigs locally made is better as they are made for the fish near by.
I use flourocarbon on mine but most use mono.
I run some with floats and some without and see what they want any given day.
Move your baits every 10 minutes or so if they don’t get hit, or decrease your weight and hold the rod while the surf drags them around till you locate feeding behavior and target those.
Lots of fish in close in the summer, but they can also be in different cuts or channels further out.
There is. There’s basically one company that controls bloodworms. They sell to the distributors, who then to shops
Never heard of anyone selling them by the half dozen before. Thats pretty much the going rate for a dozen now tho. It’s insane
whats the name of the bait shop?
I feel like I usually see a dozen jumbos for $25.
Could be the season tho they are hand harvested somewhere in New england.
Im starting growing they now and just selling them at half their price
$25 for a dozen at the bait shops around me these past few weeks.
Pretty sure thats the price for a dozen at shop near me.
