It looks like teams will be limited to 3 charters so one of these guys will be the odd man out. Personally (I'm biased) I'd choose SVG. Already has incredible race craft, a Cup win, and back-to-back Xfinity wins in his rookie season. Will be immediately fearsome on Road Courses and is learning ovals quickly.
SVG could definitely keep going until 43 or so if he wants to... so they could realistically get a decade of Cup racing out of him.

I hope so. I'd love it for him to get good enough at oval racing that he actually is in contention for championships. He's probably gonna be my favourite driver once he's full time. Maybe it's a commonwealth thing, as a brit I like him cos he's from new Zealand and he's an outsider coming into the sport.
But he's one of the very best drivers in the world already. If anyone could come into nascar as an outsider and go on to win a championship, he could do it, for sure. He wins in everything he drives. And 35 is still young, these days. Fitness programs mean drivers can drive until they're 50. Well some of them can anyway. I guess not everyone can be as ripped as Mark Martin. But yeah.
Im from nz so he is def my favourite, im hoping hell win a nascar champ then go onto another series and each time he wins the champ he move to another discipline. Only thing is that there might not be enough to support him doing that

SVG, and it isn't even close. For someone with no oval experience and is able to hit some of these tracks with very little practice and run top 15, that's impressive. Plus, the cup car and Xfinity car are very different, and he is already used to the cup car from his time in V8 Supercars

I completely agree, and think that's exactly what is going to happen. SVG is a much bigger draw (having gone to the Trackhouse shop in Charlotte, they have a bunch of his merch and none of Zane's). Plus he's a great bet to get into the playoffs with a road course win somewhere in the season. And at 35, there's less incentive to loan him out to see what he has
As someone who's been following Zane closely, outside of the first month and a half, he really hasn't been racing too poorly (outside of Darlington), but rather has gotten unlucky/had awful calls and pitstops from his team (and really slow cars). He has 2 top 10s in only 22 cup races so far, and should have had a 3rd in Sonoma if his crew chief didn't have the worst pit strategy I've seen in a while. LaJoie has 7 more in 230 more races at the cup level
He's shown enough when things are going right to not give up on him. And needs more time in XFinity to learn how to drive the flatter tracks at faster speeds than truck

Road courses are obviously a strength. But ovals, watch during the race and you see consistently he improves as the race goes. He’s figuring them out rather well.
Also the Cup car is better suited for him as it’s more similar to the Supercar. He’s good in Xfinity but think he’ll be better in Cup.

Absolutely. He reckons the rear end feels like a forklift coz it moves and twists underneath him in the corners in a way he’s not used to. He says he’s having to unlearn 30 years of instinct when he goes into a corner and the rear end steps out because he thinks that he’s losing the backend of the car, but it’s just the way the rear end in the Xfinity car works. He’s had to learn to trust that the “hand of God” as he calls it will push the car back in Line.

I say SVG because of age. Zane still has time. SVG is 35 and probably only has a few years of top performance.
SVG if they land the third charter. The man’s been pretty good at ovals, netting consistent top 15s which is no small feat considering that he’s racing in a style he’s unfamiliar with.
Zane should be lent out for a when that happens, so when either Ross or Suarez (most likely Suarez, let’s be real) leave Trackhouse, a cup ride is ready for him. He still needs to improve his oval racing game but he’s still insanely young, so the room for improvement is absolutely massive. He has the fundamentals, he’s just gotta put it all together.
I love this false narrative of Suarez either leaving or not being signed back to TrackHouse. It really shows the people that don't understand racing, business, or brands.

Every time there’s a RC, SVG will compete. Roughly 6 or 7 times a year you have a pretty fair shot at winning and that’s just with one driver.

Trackhouse got ahead of themselves and signed too many guys and now they have egg on their face. I'd probably not give up on Zane but I am not sure Shane is going to have a lightening season on ovals either, he's going to look very Zane like at times. But the guy who has the best odds to get a win is Shane.
TBH they're smart because they had a few prospects and all of them knew they were basically competing with each other.
They just have a good problem because too many prospects worked out too quickly. It's the problem Toyota has had for years where they keep more prospects than they have space for but can take the "pick of the litter" because of it.
It works out if you have the grit to cut people and can get away with it without having to pay them out or whatnot. Def a good problem to have like you said. I do think they jumped in a bit quick on Shane and Zane though, and now it's hard to pick one for the fill season. In a perfect world, I would run Shane half and Zane half.

If anything, TH should keep Zane on retainer at Kaulig. He should be a developmental driver for TH and run Xfinity full-time. He has no business in cup yet.
Nah, it's pretty smart. For one, if you loan Zane out to Spire or Kaulig you have a couple of teams more willing to work with you. Beyond that, SVG is 35. Suarez is a seat holder who probably would have been gone next year if not for the Atlanta win. And Ross is a top talent who's marketable and always going to be a threat to jump to a top team if/when a ride opens. If they can keep Zane happy buy guaranteeing he has a seat somewhere while also making him the future, they should be able to hold onto him long term and eventually one of their other 3 will jump or be let go and he'll slide right in.
Zane should take an open FRM seat if they would take him back.

Zane is young and will come into his, he just isn't there yet. His finish this past week was due to happenstance, extra overtime and low fuel on other drivers gave him his great finish. Not to diminish what Zane has done but SVG all the way.

SVG man. He's fantastic at road courses. With 3 road course races right now and 2 in the playoffs, he's an easy path to the round of 8.
It really depends on what the goal is, I think. SVG is obviously a phenom with the road courses, but we really haven't seen anything world burning from him on the ovals - that that we should have expected to so soon, of course it will take time to learn and all that.
We've seen mid-tier teams in the past put top-tier road course guys (Ambrose, Allmendinger, etc) in full season Cup rides and it didn't go great outside of the RCs. I'm not saying SVG isn't gonna get there or anything, but I don't think he's there yet. He definitely would be a threat to make the playoffs off a road course win alone, but he wouldn't likely be a threat to make a run at the title, so is that good enough? Maybe so. I think if you're looking at a one or two year deal just to go trophy hunting and make sponsors happy, I think SVG in the car for a few seasons makes sense and would be a lot of fun. I'm not sure if it's a great long term investment though since he is on the older side of the cup field already, and it's awfully late in his driving career to be picking up a new discipline.
Zane is a really interesting case. He just doesn't have a ton of exposure outside of Trucks, and honestly I just don't think Trucks are a great determination these days of someone's likely success in Cup. Zane has a 75% top-10 finish rate in Xfinity which is bananas...but it's only over 12 starts (8 top 10s). Zane has shown in relatively limited exposure that he can run good equipment to good finishes. His performance in Spire equipment hasn't been great obviously, but how much of that is because of Zane and how much of that it because of Spire? Neither Corey or Carson have been lighting the world on fire in Spire equipment either.
All that is to say I think Zane has a lot more room to grow than SVG does, and a lot more time to in his career left to do it. He's got a better foundation for the kind of racing NASCAR does, though his ceiling I'd say probably isn't as high as SVG. I think if you're looking for a guy you want to have around for a long time, Zane is a good option. I wouldn't expect the results to be there in the first couple of years, but if they can consistently grow Zane as a driver as well as Trackhouse as an organization, I think Zane could grow into a quality driver for them over a longer period of time. Or it could totally fail and they would have wasted a bunch of time and effort, that's possible too.
So if you want wins and a chance to get knocked out of the first or second round of the playoffs, but you'll be a cool team that everyone likes for a couple years, go with SVG.
If you want to take a shot at having a long term franchise driver that can grow and develop along with the team, Zane looks like the better choice to me.
SVG can put you in contention at least 5 races (# of road course races) and has been improving at ovals. Zane would only give you a chance at Daytona/Talladega - as of today.
Also, I would think SVG can bring more money given his success in other series and international background.
I really like Zane Smith but I want to see him in a good Busch car for a full season. His part time appearances for JRM (also his first Busch season) were solid.

Id choose SVG over Zane. While he doesn't have a lot of NASCAR experience, he has racing experience which can bode well for better understanding of certain situations. Obviously he won't know every possible scenario in NASCAR quite yet but he's getting there. SVG has already proven he can jump in a car and win/keep pace with the regulars if things go his way. Ovals not as much but he has improved significantly since he started in Xfinity.
Zane is much younger and can't seem to keep the fenders on it sometimes which is just part of learning what to do and what not to do in certain situations. I do think he's more than capable of winning races down the road but not right now. Once he cleans up/learns better racecraft he's gonna come at these guys like a bat out of hell. Best bet would be to loan him out to another team like he is now or drop to Xfinity until there is a cup seat ready for him. I know he wouldn't like it but sometimes that's just how the cookie crumbles.

Neither. SVG is 35. SVG has maybe 5 more years of being in his prime and it's not like he's going to massively gain something on ovals. He hasn't shown anything that would wow me and say he deserves a ride outside of his road course ability. SVG is really good on road courses and that's it. He's not going to get any better on the ovals, he's just not. Anyone who thinks he is is kidding themselves. He's normally running at best top 20 on any given oval that isn't a drafting track. While that might be impressive given his lack of experience on ovals, it's in the Xfinity series where there's at best 10 cars capable of winning and is in a car that AJ Allmendinger has won on ovals. Zane Smith at least has the excuse of being in a Spire car, but it's not like he's done anything this year to wow you except finishing second this past weekend because of everyone running out of gas.
Also, let's not forget that SVG won on a street course where it was kind of flucky how he won. Rained the entire time. They shortened the race by like 20 laps and the two guys he had to beat was Chase Elliott in a parts car with old tires and Justin Haley with old tires. The other two times he ran road courses was a 10th at Indy later that year and 20th at COTA earlier this year. Zane Smith finished better than SVG at COTA.
IMO neither driver deserves to be in the Cup series because SVG would maybe only run well at road courses and Zane Smith is running dead last in points by a mile.

Mate Shane was set for a top 10 at Talladega in cup on an oval until Ty Gibbs put a stupid block on the third lane and screwed everybody’s race which sent them all to the back of the field. The car makes way more sense to him than the Xfinity car does. He will be fine on an oval in cup.
Top 10 at Talladega means nothing in terms of being good/bad at ovals. Great execution by him for sure, but that's not a representation of pace.
He's a great driver and he can get there eventually, but you guys have to pump the brakes a little bit because this transition is way harder than some give it credit for.

Unpopular opinion but I would pick Zane. I love SVG, but want to see him continue to grow on the ovals. He's solid top 15 on ovals his first run through so I want to see some continued growth as he visits some of these tracks a second time.
SVG immediately gives you several chances at a win and a playoff spot because of his road course ability. Zane has struggled everywhere, and his only chances to win are through strategy and plate races.
If you pick anything other than Shane, you're smoking rock. Shane is a 90% chance at getting in the playoffs on any number of road courses throughout the year. Zane Smith is literally the worst performing full-time cup driver. He gets outpaced by Carson Hocevar. His best finish, EVER, in the cup series was Sunday when he barely held onto 2nd after 5 OTs.

To be completely honest, I wouldn't choose either of them, and I'd drop Zane Smith down to the Xfinity series. Both need more experience before heading to cup. Gisbergen is getting better, and getting more experienced at the ovals, and Zane Smith needs more experience in a similar car, and the Xfinity car is obviously more similar to a Cup car than a truck is.
I would try SVG for a year but if he ends up like Zane has been performing in cup series recently I am sending him back down to the Xfinity series

Top 15 finishes aren't anything to be celebrated in the Xfinity Series. Especially when you lump Daytona and Atlanta in there. SVG should be finishing top 15 in the Xfinity series given the equipment and the lack of parity considering only about 10 cars actually have a shot of winning each week.
He's done well and I was really proud of him at Nashville. Probably his best oval race yet considering it wasn't a wreck fest like usual. But do all these top 15s mean he deserves a quality Cup ride next year? He needs another season in Xfinity. I know he'll get it all figured out.
