Got about 10k saved up rn, making 3k a month and my family can loan me a ton. Looking at a 2014 v6 with 40k miles for 18k. I’ve obviously been warned a lot about convertibles, insurance prices, and crashes and stuff but it’s still what I want. What do you guys think?
How bad of an idea is it to get a mustang as a first car at 15?
❔QuestionI’m going to say this as politely as possible, but that’s the attitude of an asshole. You may not care, but you should at least be aware.
You’re right. I’ll do better in the future
Ahh very well. My first car was V6 charger , my monthly insurance was about 450$ ( Cali ) insurance company didn’t give a fuck if it was a V8 or V6. All they cared was that the car was a Charger 😂
I don't have the appropriate life experience to give a rich 15-year-old advice on cars.
Same I bought my 71 mustang with a bank loan 🤦 but I had a good sub 3% interest rate
I do. Get a modest used car and get driving experience. At this point in your life, driving will be the most risky thing you do. You will be operating a machine that can get you or someone else killed. I can’t emphasize enough how important safe driving habits and skills you need to master.
Get a shitbox as your first car. Youre gonna scrape it, curb it, and do a bunch of stupid shit. Unless you intend the mustang to be a shitbox
You are asking a question you already know the answer to.
Yeah that v6 seems like a poor deal for a mustang at that price.
It might be in nice shape but I would not consider it personally.
My Mustang (2002 V6) was my first car. Was a Hertz rental that I bought at a Dodge dealer of all places. Took me through HS, tech school, and 2 years into my first "real job" - before buy a small SUV for winter duty - and several road trips. Was always there. Did crash it once fairly badly, but it was repaired and returned to me.
V6 will save a tiny bit on insurance. You could also see if your parents will let you go onto their insurance policy as I did for the first few years which also kept costs down.
I've changed and modified so many things now that it's a far cry from what it was on day one (manual swap & supercharger are the big items) but I still own it to this day 20 years later with no intention of ever parting with it.
Terrible
Terrible idea.
As long as you can afford it and insurance, go for it. I got a 2017 GT as my first car at 18
Bro u only live once get that sht and it’s gotta be a v8 not this v6 sht
My first car was a 65 Mustang Coupe with a straight 6. Burned a quart of oil a week.
Bro you got that much capital to buy one and you’re gonna get a v6?? Just get a gt and have ford set you up with my key with limits your top speed to 80mph 100mph ect.
When I was 15 I bought my 1965 Mustang coupe from the original owner for $400. This was in 1985.
My Dad and I restored it over the next few years. Now 39 years later I’m preparing to restore it again.
Other than the time I tried to out run the cops in it, it has been a fine decision.
I may actually be able to help with this since I was in the same situation last year. Except I was a year older.
I bought a 2014 Ford Mustang V6 RS that I saved for since I was 15. Insurance prices weren't great to start but it's better now. It all depends on which company you go with and how good the plan is and I imagine where you are. Also mustangs crashing will always come up but just don't be stupid and you'll be fine.
Also I saw comments about a S550 and V8. It all depends on what you want. I was down for either a 2014 or S550 but I went with what felt right for me which is what I got. Yeah a V8 manual would be cool and a S550 is pretty nice, but I have 0 regrets with the money I spent. I can get another one down the road. Not getting a V8 right now will help me save money when communting to and from school or work (25mpg usually, I got up to 36mpg when on a road trip using cruise control), aswell as insurance money. If I can get it to work I'll post a pic. *
I understand the intrigue, and being your first car, you are excited and want to get what you want, as you have a vision in your head of how this plays out… the rush, the approvals, and overall fun and cool status. Many of us have been there.
I recommend considering a few other things. - how will it be used? - do you need to travel to the point better gas mileage will save you a sizable amount of money? Work, school, using it for Uber, etc? - despite how it feels to have some cash, $3k/mo is far from loaded, but you can maximize the potential. - make your money work for you. Remember, what you put into this car will be done, unless you are using it for business that has a clear return that cannot be accomplished by another vehicle for a better deal. With $3k, the best thing you could do is buy a budget vehicle that gets the job done, and learn about investments: consider both stocks and real estate. Don’t try to get fancy with this money and day trade… do that with play money. If you invest this early on in SPY, QQQ, Vanguard, and some others, you will look back in a short amount of time and realize this is the best advice you never wanted to hear. You could quite honestly remember this moment, as a multimillionaire. Compounding works, and so do good habits. If you can learn to overcome peer pressure, approval seeking, and impulse buying now, you will have the core principles of discipline to take you further than the majority of society.
Whatever you do decide, I wish you the best.
shouldve clarified, 3k left over as my wants, im investing and all of that stuff, so i have 3k for just the car, gas, and insurance pretty much because i dont really buy stupid stuff
V8 sir
You can afford a v8 get a v8
Id rather an inexperienced driver get into an s550 rather than a s197. Reason being is s197 is the gen that has the “live axle” where the s550 does have independent rear suspension. Besides that I believe the v6 is pretty reliable but I can’t really answer to that as I haven’t owned one.
S197 has half the power and is perfectly driveable as a first car. I got one as my first car and I drive it throughout snowy winter as well. It’s very manageable. Good tires are a must.
2014 v6 compared to an early s550 v6? Power is not double in the s550. Of course anyone CAN drive it as a new driver. Speaking in terms of my opinion on it as I would rather see a newer driver have IRS as opposed to the live axle in the s197. Tires are a must though of course if driving in snow!
What situation is a young driver going to be in where the rear suspension makes a difference?
Irs provides better handling in corners for the most part. I was a kid once who drove way too fast. That is my reasoning, again just my opinion which was asked for.
Fair enough. IMO, 90% of Mustang drivers never drive hard enough to notice that kind of difference, so doubtful a kid would either.
Insurance through the roof.
