grand and intoxicating innocence
MemeIn all fairness stamina runs out much much slower than in any of the subsequent games.
It certainly does, until you realise that you have 1% stamina left. 😂
Then you decide to rest for a bit and are killed in your sleep.
Shouldn't be sleeping a dungeon. The rat on the other side is gonna coup d'etat you without you knowing. Super realistic
coup de grâce*, but I like your version better
Lol oops, it sounded funny when I was writing it. My 3.5 is rusty
Iirc you can't get killed in a sleep. If only die of poison or an illness. The game would prevent you from sleeping with enemies nearby
I think you are missing three great points about daggerfall:
no temple censor!
if people don’t like you they use racial slurs to dismiss you.
that final dungeon teleport trap.
Why I play unity now. Least the dungeons are not as bad.
I love the huge, labyrinthine dungeons in Daggerfall. Makes you feel like you're actually an adventurer exploring a perilous dungeon. Dungeons in later games feel like walk-in closets in comparison.
Yeah, but the smaller dungeons in Unity are still massive. It just takes them from "Labyrinthine and impossible to navigate" to "Still huge but you can kinda figure out where you're going."
I mean, I loved the huge labyrinth until the last room was filled with 8 wizards in a level 3 quests . Died of 8 fireballs in one frame
That is true. Even the largest dungeons in skyrim are small in comparison to daggerfall ones.
Good to know, i always wanted bigger dungeons in skyrim, now i know where to go to get them
just know that the dungeons are not "flat" as in "more or less representable in a 2D map". The dungeons are huge and the map useless because even the smallest dungeons have like 10 layers and go up and down one as they please.
I would have loved bigger dungeons. Hell when I heard people say "tick that smaller dungeons checkbox in unity" I scoffed. Then I played and got lost even in the (tiny in comparison) starter dungeon. Ticked that box mighty fast. Dungeons still huge tho.
I don't think the map is useless at all. It becomes tedious later on for sure, but it's probably the best way to find hidden rooms and your way out when you're deep into a dungeon.
Daggerfall will DEFINITELY scratch that itch. One dungeon can take a good hour or two to fully explore.
Yeah. Not that I'm knocking it, morrowind still had great dungeons. But daggerfall really gives that "intrepid adventurer" feel.
True. But it also has those unbeatable dungeons which hurts the game in my opinion.
I mean the dungeons in Later games fit the world a lot better, cuz they make sense as an actual ruin from an ancient civilization or a Random cave smugglers are hiding in, or like a Fort that was teken over by bandits, an old tomb, etc
They also just became giant hallways opposed to an actual dungeon
The mod/option that makes the dungeons smaller is literally a godsend. Not that the huge dungeons aren’t a cool idea but I don’t want to dread a milk run lol.
Unity? What's that?
Daggerfall unity. It fixes allot of daggerfall bugs and issues.
Ahhh gotcha
Is unity a Daggerfall mod?
In a way yes. But it allows you to add other mods on top of fixing several issues and bugs of the original game.
It's more like a rebuild in a different engine using original assets
I've still had the issue of unsolvable dungeons. First time I encountered it was in Unity actually (which I've played more than DOS, granted). Got frustrated trying to find a kidnapped child and eventually gave up and cheated just flew around to figure out where she was. Turned out she was inside one of those disconnected rooms used for ambient sounds.
If you dont cure your poison you will die, if you fast travel while poisoned you will die.
If you run out of stamina while fighting, believe it or not, you die.
If you fast travel while diseased, you will definitely die. Oh and diseases work like real life, with an incubation period and everything. And no tooltip to tell you anything until you start experiencing symptoms, and even then you get nothing other than "you feel bad".
It was so good.
Jesus
Does stamina stamina/max stamina still affect whether an action succeeds or fails?
Annnnnd that is why I haven’t been able to get into daggerfall.’
That does not sound engaging. MW FTW!
The main quest can also break and never come if you join a faction within the month you leave the Privateer's hold. Unaware, I had two savegames where it happened, I promptly stopped playing lmao.
All of that sounds awful
Even the nipples?
I’ve seen some nasty nipples, course those were on men.
I have nipples greg, can you milk me? (Meet the parents ref for anyone who doesn't get it)
Not all of it
Fair
It is a thing of beauty.
You sound awful
You had me at nipples
Time limits are huge tho, as well as everyone plays DFU where dungeon generation is fixed and plot important dungeons are manualy created. Also for me playing DFU with a whole bunch of rpg and survival mods was the greatest fun I've had in tes. It really did feel like a typical anime adventure
If you look closely behind Daggerfall, you can see the air molecule that's supposed to be Arena fans
Where's Elder Scrolls: Redguard in all this mess?
Dead, just like Prince A'tor.
Well, Kirkbride was already creating the universe for this one, so there is still a solid fanbase that I think are more active than Arena
And if you squint just hard enough, you will see Battlespire
LOVED battlespire
💀 I like Arena
Daggerfall was difficult. The timed quest sucked so much cause it added more worry. I got infected by a werewolf during a main quest mission to kill a werewolf, but was able to track down an artifact that let me be human and werewolf without the negatives. Goty
I hate poison and diseases in Daggerfall so much...
But they made me try to play smarter and not spend days trying to grind loot in that nasty tomb. I think I caught a disease just from staying in there for too long.
Becoming a werewolf in Daggerfall can be beneficial. I’m considering becoming a vampire if I ever play it again
I heard the transition cutscene into a vampire is pretty dope compared to later games
Oh no! Consequences, magic, monsters and actual time limits for jobs in my fantasy adventurer life simulator RPG 😡😡😡
They hated him because he told the truth
Dont you dare writting something like that on mainly skybabies subreddit
What Oblivion has over Skyrim is skooma-Indiced conversations between potato headed NPCs and the worst iteration of Bosmer ever
Best*
I mean in Skyrim Bosmer are just depressed Manly elves in Oblivion they are silly short femboys just like the Lore
Lol they are not femboys in lore, the men were supposed to be grotesque tree goblin abomination elves, and the women were supposed to be absolute baddies just cos why not. Imo eso has the best dichotomy and representation of Bosmer
Bosmer women are really saints to marry some of the things I’ve seen in early bosmer concept art lol
ESO has I think 3 selections of horns/antlers for wood elves. The bosmer actually have a distinct look in that game and I hope Bethesda keeps them that way for es6
Bosmer in skyrim are still femboys tbh.
They look to muscular and manly for me exept Faendal
Malborn looks too muscular and manly for you? Same with Enthir, Ungrien, and Syndus? The two brothers in whiterun are kind of “muscular and manly” till they explain the silly way their shop got its silly little name.
If you think it's unrealistic to have a hunter get an accidental arrow in the ass after getting drunk, you've never known hunters. Wood elves are just the rednecks of Tamriel.
Oblivion Fact: It is impossible to make a High Elf that doesn't look like Beeker from the Muppets
Oblivion characters still have conversations with each other and their own little schedules and whatnot. I feel like in Skyrim they didn’t even try to make the NPCs realistic or immersive, even if the Oblivion ones are outdated
The problem is Oblivions NPC convos were…well, unintentional comedy
“I saw a mudcrab the other day. Horrible creatures.”
Oblivion NPC convos sounded like AI conversations. Game was truly ahead of its time
Skyrim has schedules and conversations for its NPCs too, dialogue tailored between specific NPCs whenever they walk near one another, what are you talking about?
Skyrim NPCs do converse as well as have their own little lives and routines.
Skyrim does that too actually lol. I love when people just lie about Skyrim to bash it lol
I'd recommend people trying Daggerfall Unity. You can get mods for it on Nexus and it's bretty gud
I wish I wasn't one of those people who gets sick playing early 3D games. Iunno if it's the models or something to do with the distance but when I play games that look like doom within 15 minutes I feel like I'm gonna vomit. Daggerfall looks really tight though especially for the age it was released in
It might be the limited field of view in those early games.
Skybox is what trips me in Daggerfall. It moves really weird when you look around. That's why daggerfall unity as it has several great skybox mods
The skybox in that game is a 2d image that moves really weird. Granted, it’s a cool looking image, but it made me sick enough to have to change it to an actual skybox
its insanely good
Hol’up. Real ones know that Morrowind is actually, on average, harder than Daggerfall… at least, if you aren’t taking advantage of blatant exploits, like the soul trap bug or arguably the alchemy system in general. Daggerfall is hard for a few minutes, but then you can rush off to find like, a crypt or something, to raid it a few times and come out the other side with enough money to buy whatever spells or gear you want. Or, hell, you can legitimately go to some no-name kingdom and legally rob the bank of like, 50k to fund your adventuring… which you never actually have to pay back so long as you never go back to that kingdom. Then, you have the movement speed of Daggerfall, and the enemy’s tendencies to remember you and stick to you in Morrowind, and it makes it a lot harder than Daggerfall in the end.
Ive played morrowind and daggerfall on highest difficulties with and without mods. First morrowind then daggerfall. Daggerfall is more complex and therefore harder. Literally includest every system that morrowind has and twice as much on top. But realisticaly both games are purely rpg based and therefore insanely easy with some proper preparation
no one says this about oblivion
Yeah... I love Oblivion, but Skyrim's level scaling and difficulty system is leaps and bounds better than Oblivion's.
Oblivion's difficulty curve is a straight line unless you deliberately gimp yourself. I don't think anybody who's played both games for a significant amount of time would disagree that Skyrim did the whole level scaling thing better.
The perk system is my big gripe with Skyrim, magic users need so many perk points to even try and keep up with warriors or thieves.
That’s less of a perk issue and more of a magic balance issue.
Warriors: Can get new weapons. Damage scales with level. Can upgrade weapons with enchantments and repairs.
Archer: Can get new weapons. Damage scales with level. Can upgrade weapons with enchantments and repairs.
Mages: Can get new spells.
I suppose, but another issue is that warriors and archers dont have to spend as many points to get their damage up as well.
Yeah that’s again because of the balance. You don’t have to spend a single point in melee and you get bonus damage every level anyway and can equip the highest level weapons. Mages have to invest in their tree to be effective
That’s not exactly in Skyrim’s favor as much as showing how bad it was in Oblivion.
I never said that it was good in Skyrim, only that it's better than it was in Oblivion, and basically nobody argues that. Level scaling in general was a mistake that Bethesda has never been able to make work in a satisfying way.
To be fair, skyrim on legendary was awful to play, especially when you need to waste 30 arrows in early game per any npc unless you rig the game and 1M dmg sword takes two hits to kill something. Oblivion was a spongefest too but at least spell chaining works.
One of my bigger issues in oblivion was bandits scaled armor.
^ there are many ways Oblivion is better than Skyrim, being more challenging isn’t one of them. Nor do many people say it is.
I'd say all of the newer three are easy to cheese, but if you don't know how you should level (as seldomly as possible) and what you should pick as major skills (those you never use, which is counterintuitive), you get your ass mutilated in oblivion because enemies scale by level, your might doesn't necessary.
I remember the last time I replayed it, not too long ago. I forgot the level peculiarities and fucked off doing dungeons as soon as I could and went to Kvatch quite a way later. Thanks to having leveled like 7 times, but without actualy improving most stats much (One of my major skills was athletics..), I was met by.. Let's just say at that point I could hardly survive a single clannfear and in kvatch I was greeted by several of them at once plus some even stronger enemies (don't remember which, probably the big crocos).
So yeah, that was more challenging than anything in Skyrim - and probably an experience many had if they didn't read up on proper leveling.
As in general comparison.. I always saw it as such: Skyrim doesn't really have strengths, it just lacks weaknesses.
Morrowind has the strength of the lore, the main story, the world building, the environments. It has the downside of 90% unimaginitive side quests that are nothing more than fetch quests.
Oblivion is kinda inverted, it has a rather boring world, looking the same wherever you go, and the main quest is kind bland, but god damn the side quests/guild quests are brilliant.
Skyrim.. Doesn't have the most interesting world but more so than oblivion, and it doesn't have the best side quests but more so than morrowind. It's just.. Middle in most aspects.
Oblivion is more challenging to play because nobody can look at those faces for more than a few hours at a time.
I was going to say, are there actual diehard Oblivion fans out there that hate Skyrim? I can somewhat understand TES 1-3 fans hating TES 4-5 but Oblivion and Skyrim are too similar to have such strong disdain for one but not the other.
They're pretty similar games. Execpt Skyrim is more streamlined and doesn't have the worst level scaling system in gaming history.
Hi, die hard Oblivion fan who genuinely tried to like Skyrim but doesn't. I'm not even really sure what it is about Skyrim I don't like, just every time I start playing it I end up back in Oblivion. 😅
All elder scrolls games are engaging RPGs made with soul and character
I agree but goddamn Cyrodiil in Oblivion was bland as all hell. The tropical rice fields, the Venice-style Imperial City, the flying dragons circling White-Gold, all GONE!!
Todd watching LOTR has been a disaster for the Cyrodiilic race...
Dragons in Cyordiil? I didn't knew that! Sounds cool and interesting!
But im pretty sure that LOTR was not the reason. Rather Limitations.
On the descriptions of Cyrodiil as a jungle in Morrowind: (08/22/20) Cyrodiil was going to be as described in the first PGE, which the book you’re talking about took its quotes from. The heart of the province being what you think of when you think of a traditional jungle, tumbling down to the fields of large rice paddies that fed the Empire, guarded by Romanesque troops and dragons everywhere. The Imperial City was to be vast, rolling across wetlands and swamps, with large sections lost and overgrown, full of too many cults to count, the oldest temples having obviously been around since the Merethic. Then Todd watched The Fellowship of the Ring and mistakes were made.
That's from Michael Kirkbride (I'm sure limitations played SOME part too though)
Yeah I know I know. This stuff was also originally planned to be in the game. But from what I heard it had to be cut for the Limitation reason. You can't add all this to a game from 2006. BUT I think they should had added it via DLCs (or at that time Plug-ins)
I hate that majority of the cities are crumbling and struggling in Skyrim
To be fair there's a civil war going on so that's to be expected
Yeah I love all elder scrolls but Oblivions world was just a platform for its quests and stories not really in and of itself engaging either lore or politics wise
Well, Oblivion is not really difficult or challenging, it’s rather… broken. You can become either extremely weak (due to the leveling problems) or pretty much a God himself (say “hello” to enchanting and 100% chameleon set). Almost like in Morrowind, though.
Where is arena as a cosmic horror eating all three alive?
Weird take, both Oblivion and Skyrim have floaty combat and a bad level scaling mechanic, the only thing mechanically Oblivion has a leg up in is that it actually has classes so you can play a role. They're fairly similar compared the the older games.
Technically Skyrim did fix the level scaling from Oblivion but people in this subreddit never seem to acknowledge that for some reason 🙃
That...is literally the point/joke of the meme though?
Though tbf Oblivion's quests are way better. Imo the cities are better as well. The lore element, though, is more controversial.
I agree I can recall way more Oblivion quest, all the guilds were pretty good.
Mages guild is hands down better in Skyrim if you are just comparing the two. But some of Oblivion's random quests are my faves.
Eh. Skyrim’s scaling wasn’t god tier but Oblivion’s was actually hot dog shit.
Ok but they’re all spectacular games tho
as the time went on they got less RPGy and less accessible
Thats not necessarily a bad thing, but i would love if TES 6 was more like morrowind
Skyrim literally has no class
old is better mentality
Cromulent.
Zork
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

Even Jager Tharn rolled in his grave in oblivion hearing this.
Daggerfall should actually be just dozends of reused stickmen combined to make a phantom of a larger person.
With all of them yelling "Halt!" in unison.
I can’t play daggerfall, it’s not that I didn’t try, but I can’t beat the tutorial
The dungeon you start in isn’t random, just look up a map or something if youre having trouble
I played Daggerfall. It was super fun, and I’d gladly go back to it… if I had guarantees that the guild quests that sometimes have me spend over forty minutes in a dungeon wouldn’t break. Great game and concept with some serious execution flaws. Morrowind can break, but at least when it breaks, I can usually use the console to fix it, and it doesn’t break nearly as often lmao
Daggerfall Unity fixes Daggerfall's broken quests, so that's a big plus. ;)
Bethesda made the Elder scrolls really bland, removing all the Sci fi inspired elements and deluding the high fantasy aesthetic, I know it's an unpopular opinion but compare daggerfall and mirrowwinds art to skyrim or esos
I think call of duty Bethesda edition is called Fallout. Skyrim is Fallout, viking edition.
Although fun fact, when Fallout 3 first came out, fans of the first two games who hated Fallout 3 would detract it by calling it “Oblivion with guns”
I like the way it was put in the Honest Trailer for Fallout 4.
From the company that makes one good game two different ways...
Daggerfall is on a whole different level 😩
Arena is the weird butler from Scary movie two
where is my daggerfall remaster Todd. Where is it???
Daggerfall unity is most likely better than any remaster would be.
I never saw a Oblivion Fan saying this. This and the Term Skybaby is what I mostly hear from Morrowind Hardcore Fans.
as someone who tried to play even a modded out daggerfall unity this year.. morrowind wins
I've never made it out of daggerfall's tutorial dungeon haha
I will never forget immediately dying in the first battle in Morrowind. Took me awhile to figure out the weapon accuracy. Thought my game was bugged. It was my first serious open world RPG I ever played. Only did FF before that and halo really along with driving games. Opened my eyes into a new world.
Will also never forget layering up all my clothes and making crazy enchantments like infinite levitate so my character was invincible and flew everywhere.
Crazy progression from dying to a crab to becoming invincible like Superman. Loved it. Oblivion was fun but not the same and I was disappointed they got rid of all the skills in Skyrim.
They are all fun but different.
Sounds like nostalgia straw-man cope to me.
I am going to defend Oblivion a but. Due to level scaling, you face hard foes when you level Up, but in Morrowind you enconter enemies with low level.
Due to level scaling you never get a sense of progression. I hated Oblivion's level scaling.
Usually its a feeling of falling behind
Daggerfall had baller argonians 💪🦎
I like how Mehrunes Dagon sided with Daggerfall instead. You know; ‘cause he failed in his invasion.
He’s not wrong about oblivion, it’s just that ME and DF are even more so
That’s true. Morrowind is the best game. Who played in Daggerfall?
First time strolling the streets of Daggerfall at night. <There are enemies nearby> Eh. Alright, probably rats and stuff-
King Lysandus: VENGEANCE!!!
14-year-old-me: Oh my god I'm having a fucking heart attack!
Where my Arena fan at?
I still need to get the motivation for beating morrowind but so far it's my second favorite next to Oblivion. I love skyrim but Oblivion will always have a special place in my heart and morrowind is just oblivion with worst combat (still fun when you get the hang of it) but better exploration/quests to me
Ah yes the famous hard = fun
Daggerfall is unplayable shit
fans needed 20 years and entire game rework in unity engine to make it remotely playable
Does anyone actually believe Oblivion is better than Skyrim? The only thing Oblivion really has over Skyrim is a better story and quests.
I personally like oblivion more, solely because it has the better dlc, shivering isles, that dlc is awesome, but game to game, skyrim wins, hands down no contest, better level to level mechanics, no need to bullshit the game and overpower beyond your level to do 2 points of damage to an enemy, but if oblivions best mechanics and skyrims best mechanics were combined it would be a near perfect game, also oblivion has better npc interactions, and that stuff actually happens when your not on top of people doing stuff
Dlc is one thing I hadn’t considered. In my mind, the Shivering Isles is still the golden standard for dlc.
Skyrim's DLC weren't bad either.. Maybe they were not Shivering Isles but they were good through and through
Conversations with no logical flow are better interactions to you? "Did you hear about the high elves?" "Last week I saw a mudcrab" riveting stuff lol
I don't know you, and I don't care to know you.
Yes but have any of you played the original fallout? Difficulty should be taken with a grain of salt.
I think that Max Difficulty Oblivion is harder than Max Difficulty Morrowind, due to the spongeyness of all the enemies. To be completely honest, and this may be surprising to a lot of people here, but I would say Daggerfall is definitely the easiest game out of all of these, including Skyrim. Unfortunely, there is a very brief window of time towards the beginning where the game is challenging and by extension, fun, but you very quickly hit a point where you can destroy everything with ease. Granted, all Elder Scrolls games have this, but you hit it much quicker in Daggerfall.
It can be hard to gauge difficulty especially when you consider exploits and glitches. Assuming we barred most major game-breaking exploits and glitches and were playing by the rules of Max Difficulty, Perma-death, as well as including a level cap of 10, I would order the games something like this: (From Easiest to Hardest)
Daggerfall < Morrowind < Skyrim < Oblivion
I don't have enough experience with Arena to fairly place it.
Best comparison?
Skyrim and CoD Warzone 1. Oblivion and Fortnite. Morrowind and PUBG/Warzone 2.0.
I don't play ESO so I can't say about it.
Idk why Elder Scrolls of all series would have a hard on about difficulty lol.
Nah, neither morrowind nor daggerfall fanboys are the 'good guys' here, they're all the annoying dude.
Some gatekeeping is good in all communities, but people, too much means too much!
Hehe, Oblivion Made with soul and character, that's the funniest joke I heard all week
I made a instant kill touch spell at lvl 1 in oblivion, what are we talking about
The haircut is pretty spot on too
What about Arena, Battlespire, and Redguard?
There is another…
I would switch Morrowind with Oblivion and Daggerfall with Morrowind. (Even though my favorite is Oblivion by far)
Daggerfall doesn't have soul
I explain this every time I tell someone Skyrim sucks ass and their jaw drops like I just kicked their dog and don’t like pizza.
Someone who played the older games will always say that what came before is way better. Someone that played daggerfall is laughing their ass off at the fact that I think they can’t reach another height like morrowind again, cause obviously morrowind was a huge step down in scope from what daggerfall was, and the dlc really didn’t make it that much better.
My old boss always said Daggerfall is the best
Oblivion and Morrowind are best no exceptions
Arena
I would play daggerfall exclusively if u didn’t get trapped in dungeons if ur not careful
I tried daggerfall, morrowind is still the best
Lol it’s so true. Daggerfall is brutal
Honestly I played more skyrim than any other elder scrolls game and I started kn morrowind. But I didn't play much oblivion. I am now replaying oblivion, and omg it's actually really good. I am really getting into the game.
Morrowind fans protecting their lil bro Skyrim fans (source: I am a Skyrim fan)
False. Morrowind players are the most likely to start talking about their game to Skyrim players but now you shift the blame to oblivionchads
morrowind quests be like: escort while navmesh issues result in me pulling every hair out cuz npc has speed of 10 and agro range of ever single hound, rat, cliff racer and other from the entire island on them
Oblivion quests are the Best and I also love oblivion's flora and biom variety but autoleveling makes the game borderline unplayable (that is without taking a hit to my ego and lowering the difficulty slider)
You mean Arena
Meanwhile arena be in the background drooling lol
Honestly if they want to remake the entire Elder Scrolls series with updated graphics, etc. I would buy that.
nah Daggerfall is just ass ngl
ARENA
Fun details about Daggerfall:
