For my college final as a product designer, I have to redesign a first aid kit for camping. I am trying to gather more information on already existing kits and improvements people would like to see. Any insight and feedback are greatly appreciated! It is relatively short, consisting of 16 questions.
Thank you for the info! I forgot to attach the survey above lol. It is now linked if you have the chance to fill it out.
No problem. I'm not seeing the survey
Edit 04/18 21:00: I see the survey now
For me, quality is super important. A bunch of options on the market will have 1 or 2 good things, often times its the pouch, but then a bunch of low quality fluff to fill it up.
When you say first aid kit, for me there are a few levels.
The boo boo kit. This will have bandaids, insect bite treatment kit, burn cream, antibiotic, disinfectant wipes, splinter kit, maybe a finger splint or two, benadryl, moleskin, asprin, crevats, ace bandage, ect. Its to treat the average bumps, bruises, burns, blisters, and cuts one can expect when playing in the outdoors. Itll be needed 100 to 1 over the trauma kit which is next.
The trauma kit, its an add onto the booboo kit with things like a torniquet or two, israeli battle dressing, packing gauze, hemostatic agen, simple splints, and a long bone traction splint, and a quality trauma shear (I prefer Xshear). This is for a major hemorrhage such as if one slipped with their camp knife while preparing something, or a major break such as if one slipped on a backwoods trail and broke their femur. Stuff that non treatment will almost certainly mean death, but requires a higher level of profficency.
Theres also some addons such as extras of rx medications, epi if one has allergies, and things like glucose and a glucometer if diabetic.
The pouch should be red with a white cross. Black and cammo are getting popular, but red is universal. If I have to ask someone to run to my overstuffed pack and get the medical kit, there isnt much simpler to find than the big red pouch with the white cross. But one in cammo or black that matches everying else will be a difficult process. It should be waterproof, and as compact as possible. The booboo kit will fit in a simple cargo pocket, but the full kit will be a good bit bigger, but it kind has to be.
Thats a pretty good rundown of what I carry, but im also an EMT and Skipatrol. Ive yet to find a company that makes exactly what I want or need, so I always end up making my own.
I always end up modifying mine and balancing it out. I wish more of the bags were waterproof.
Did you mean to say a 16 question questionnaire?
