I've never been able to afford a brand new car. i'm in my early 40s and prior generations used to buy brand new cars all the time at that age. I was saving for a good down payment but now the prices have doubled and it makes my savings feel like nothing. 10 year old cars are going for 15K now.
How many of us have never owned a brand new car?
DiscussionSame. I even got the color I wanted. Prior to that, I drove a 2007, 1999, 1995, and 1994. What I drive now feels like a spaceship compared to the other cars. I did not want a new car, but it was just a better deal compared to the hot garbage that they were passing off for $20K.
I went from a 2014 base model Honda to a 2024 VW and I say this too. It’s like going from a bike to a space ship. I don’t even know how to work everything yet. It’s wild.
How do you like the VW? Which model is it and why did you choose VW? These questions are coming from a late 30s guy who owns a 2014 mazda 3 and this thread is giving me hope that I can buy a new car in the near future. I was looking at a GLI b/c it has a manual. Can you give any insight?
I have a Tiguan SE R-line. So far, I love it, though I wish you could keep it in sport mode all the time because it’s really zippy in sport mode. We were looking at 23s and 21s (22 seemed to be a problematic year) but we were only 2-3 k away from a new 2024. And why not get new at that point? I’m 40 and it’s the first new car I’ve ever owned.
I had a Jetta years ago and also adored it; I went with a Honda CRV because the a/c in the Jetta was quitting intermittently and I needed something ASAP. It was a good, reliable car but it wasn’t fun like VWs can be.
