You got free food, housing, and even clothing though. Not a terrible deal.
Those are the bare minimum responsibilities that all parents sign up for when they have kids. Kiddo didn’t ask to be born lol they’re 100% dependent and vulnerable. I sincerely hope you didn’t grow up to feel grateful for straight up neglect.
Boomers were far from the first generation to expect their kids to help out lol.
I worked at the family business as a kid, I feel like it's common among immigrant families. It kinda sucked at the time because I would have rather played video games but I at least grew up with some sense of work ethic instead of being whiny and entitled.
The point I’m making is that shelter, food, and clothing is the minimum required threshold to move from neglect into parenting. Not something the child should be made to feel grateful for (you said, “gee, good deal”). Now you’re talking about something else in response to my comment (helping out the family..?).
Yes, when a kid helps with a family business they are helping the family. It's also possible OPs family couldn't afford a sitter and brought them to work and they interpreted it as unpaid child labor. I was just saying it's bitchy to complain as an adult about not being paid as a child.
