#**What's Melanoma?**

Melanoma is, in simple terms, skin cancer. It is not limited to just being on the outer skin. There are forms known to happen under fingernails and eyes.

Common causes for the disease include:

* Having a fair complexion.
* Being exposed to natural sunlight or artificial sunlight (such as from tanning beds) over long periods of time.
* Having a history of many blistering sunburns, especially as a child or teenager.
* Having several large or many small moles.
* Having a family or personal history of melanoma.
