That same line of logic would also lead you to say Dustin Jacoby is a better kickboxer than Dominick Reyes, or that Holly Holm is a better kickboxer than Amanda Nunes, or that Marvin Vettori is a better kickboxer than Jared Cannonier. Having a base in kickboxing doesn't by default make you a superior kickboxer to an MMA fighter who can throuroughly outstrike you without even threatening a takedown. They're all MMA fighters once they reach the octagon. This isn't Royce Gracie and Art Jimmerson in UFC 1

What exactly did I say that gave you the impression I think Strickland beats Blachowicz in an MMA fight? I did say I think Strickland would beat these other fighters Izzy has beaten, like Vettori and Whittaker. Not that Strickland would beat opponents from other weightclasses that Izzy has lost to. Their two common opponents are Pereira (who is definitely a better kickboxer than Strickland) and Cannonier who had a magnitudes better performance vs Strickland and arguably lost.

The fact that Sean soundly beat Izzy mentally broke some people i swear. They have two diametrically opposed styles which cannot really be compared as better or worse. Izzy baits aggression and Sean smothers it. Sean mitigates any damage possible and Izzy will take damage to return it. One goes forward and one goes backwards.
That's very fair, and style matchup likely played heavily into their fight against one another. It's just funny seeing people act like I insulted their sacred cow, when all they can grasp on as an argument is the appeal to authority that Izzy had a career as a professional kickboxer. There's a whole chain of removed comments because people started hurling insults.
This is why sean fans aren't taken seriously.

Another fun fact: Jamahal Hill only won one fight in the UFC against someone who had not just lost. It was against OSP in 2020 (who was 2-3 in his last 5). Even his title win was against someone who was coming off a loss, since Glover had lost against Jiri and he fought Hill for the vacant title.
He has also made multiple UFC level fighters look completely lost and ineffective in multiple fights, including Izzy.
Regardless of your personal feelings about the guy, his style and training regimen have created a very difficult puzzle for everyone in the division, to the point where guys look like they don't even want to be in there with him after a couple of rounds.
You sound like the (naive) fans that complain about dominant wrestlers - you're locked in a cage and you're fighting another trained martial artist. You're going to do what you do best to win.
Tbh I don’t think most fans would have a problem with Strickland’s style if he wasn’t also the guy talking about how he loves violence and wants to be the first person to kill someone in the octagon then hitting them with pitter-patter punches and shelling up at first contact for 95% of the fight.

It’s like Sean created a few seconds of action in every fight for advertising purposes. That works for him in terms of getting new fans. The Adesanya fight’s last 10 seconds, he is screaming but how his body tenses up at the slightest movement from Adesnaya - Sean is more cautious and defensive but not with how he carries and speaks about himself.
I really doubt this man is thinking of advertising in the middle of his fights, brother. He's thinking of winning and getting paid. The concept of round stealing by doing impressive shit at the last few seconds has been around for way longer than Sean's career.
A lot of boxing greats in particular used that tactic.

I think most people hardly even pay attention to the fights. So focused on cell phones or a beer that they fail to notice many 'action' fighters floating around the cage and avoiding exchanges for 3 minutes of every round, and simply remember the 60 seconds of excitement per round. Strickland is walking into exchange after exchange but since there's not many power shots connecting in either direction, it doesn't leave the same impression. For some, the big question seems to be if Strickland slips a jab while landing his own jab, then lands a follow up jab, and a teep, was there ever even an exchange?

It doesn't matter how clean or impressive his form is. If he's the one being aggressive and landing more shots, more flush, that will win him rounds.
It's not about doing something actually impressive, it's about leaving an impression at the last moment. You look like you were winning. Literally can just be dropping your hands, or throwing one or two flurries that do no damage.
The concept of round stealing by doing impressive shit at the last few seconds has been around for way longer than Sean's career.
And honestly it's just the last 10-15 seconds of his fights that he does this. One of the biggest knocks against Sean that has really hurt him in the past as Eric Nicksick points out is people doing a lot in the last seconds of rounds to steal them against Sean.
That makes sense. I wondered about the impact of those last few seconds seen together like this in one video/reel and how much it helps his brand appeal to a newcomer

It also helps earn some grace after 24:50 of boring jabs. Like it wipes away the memory of how inactive his fight was and almost changes the narrative of him as a fighter. Really smart move on his part.
He's not even that aggressive in half of these. It's his usual defensive gameplan but with some occasional yelling with his hands down at a safe distance.

Comparing max and Sean is delusional. Max is entertaining because he’s entertaining the entire round PLUS the last ten seconds.

Nah, he throws 1-2 pillow combos for 24:50, and landing enough to the face will mark up anyone even at half power. If anyone dares to swing back, he backs up or rolls. He's defensively sound, and difficult to style on, but he's not getting in your face and throwing hands. He jumps in for a couple and immediately jumps back.
He never stands in the pocket and exchanges like Max, he doesn't blitz like Max, he doesn't take one to give one like Max does, he doesn't have a chin as tough as Max, he doesn't have KO power if he actually fights hard...
When Max points at the middle, does he take a backwards step? Sean sure fucking does. He barks like a nervous dog that runs away if you actually try to engage.

I know people love to hate on Izzy but the state of the top of MW without him sucks. Jared, Driscus, Sean, Costa, Vettori. Not a single one of them garner any sort of excitement. Sean’s the only one who is marketable and that’s because of his mouth certainly not because of his 25 minute 1-2’s.

I’m talking about the contender pool at MW. Nobody stands out, nobody has that star quality. Exciting is fine but I’m talking about the state of the division moving forward. Costa and Vettori are cooked, Sean is boring, DDP and Jared are okay but have no marketability (I’ll give DDP more credit he is an exciting fighter). I hope Allen can be more exciting but he just lost to Chris Curtis.
Imavov, Bobby Knuckles and Khazmat need to help the top of this division.
Vettori is 30, Costa is 33. They had some good performances and especially Marvin has time to improve his skills and get better. Costa is kind of cooked, I'll give you that, but he can still turn things around and get another run at the title in his career. It's too soon to write him off.

He was (past tense) during his climb through the MW rankings. His first title reign was marred with some of the most boring fights at the time, with Costa being the lone exception in his first title reign. Use reach advantage, feint, jab, calf kick, repeat. Extremely safe point fighting style.
Sean O'Malley is the peak example of a dynamic fighter at an elite level. Saying Izzy was one of the most dynamic fighters has not been true for quite some years.
Edit: Crazy how this is somehow a controversial take now. For people downvoting I urge you to rewatch Izzy vs Romero, Cannonier, Blachowicz, Vettori, and Whittaker 2. Literally the complete opposite of dynamic and flashy striking. People were leaving arena's in the latter rounds of Izzy's title fights (notably vs Cannonier) because of how boring they were.

My god I hate Strickland's style the more I see it. He's like an angry teenager just spamming front kicks and flailing. I don't give a fuck if there is some technique behind it, it looks like a straight up joke.
I know it's popular to talk smack on Strickland, and indeed, those last seconds of his fights show that he can adjust his style. However it is also true, that it takes two to tango. If his opponent would try to actively engage Strickland, there is a good change that they would end up like Abus Magomedov or Adesanya at the end of round one. So we often see this dance when Strickland pressures his opponent, jabbing the entire time. I do like his style nonetheless. His kicking game was much better against Costa. And the cardio is seriously impressive.
Yeah, when his opponents get aggressive with him you can get entertaining fights, but it’s much riskier for them. Abus and Brendan Allen were super aggressive and got finished. Dricus brought the fight as well and got lumped up pretty good.
It’s pretty clear that Strickland is perfectly happy to coast through 5 rounds if his opponent refuses to push him though.
DDP did push him though, and Sean coasted to a unsatsfying loss.
Yep, du Plessis gave him a good challenge. It would also interesting to see how Strickland would deal with Chimaev, who is very aggressive, and he has very good wrestling technique.
Could possibly be interesting. I think Sean could be a greater and more exciting fighter if he had a higher gear to go into, or if he hunted more for finishes. Kind of weird with his presentation and personality that that part is completely missing for him (outside the last 10 seconds of the last round).

They really don't, though. They show exactly why he can't be more aggressive if anything -- his defense, which is his best quality, is a lot worse in these aggressive moments. It's similar to Leon Edwards coasting to decisions despite having elite skills everywhere. Their defense is amazing when they fight at the pace they've mastered, trying to be more aggressive would leave them way more open to getting tagged. It might be boring, but if their boring styles make them world champions, why would they risk losing their belt just to satisfy some "Just Bleed" fans?
