I can't find anything on the internet, just that you need to heat in some certain way, but how? Is it even possible without some special equipment?
Thoughts on the method from the other comment?
Cooking wood in your oven with oxygen (air) can change/darken the color close to that of real torrefied wood. However it's purely cosmetic.
In a kitchen oven you can't heat the wood nearly hot enough to really drive out the oils and crystalize the sap. So you're not going to get any of the structural changes that we want for guitar wood. You need an industrial torrefication process with inert gases for that.
Luckily torrefied maple can be found reasonably cheaply! I recommend American Specialty Hardwoods if you're in the US.
There are some.videos.on.youtube both music and just plain woodworking where home.oven roasting is explored.
Definitely some level of results are achieved by DIY
Starting moisture may be a big factor
You could easily split, warp or otherwise get unwanted resilts
There is no reason to do this yourself - it isn't that expensive to buy roasted maple neck blanks.
I have done this several times and it works out great if you follow it exactly
That’s more about a visual effect. It’s not comparable to torrified wood.
I visited a facility that was using steam and pressure, in a 20 foot long pressure vessel. you could experiment with small pieces in a pressure cooker, but a large pressure vessel would be classified as "special equipment".
I have heard rumors of traditional methods of putting guitar bridges in meat smokers, for several hours. presumably the low oxygen environment created do to combustion, and relatively low heat, keeps the valuable wood from burning. If I had a smoker that would fit a neck blank Id probably give it a try (with some wood i didnt mind burning)
It needs to be "dry steam", which requires superheating regular steam beyond it's vaporization point. This is not something you can really do at home safely.
Do you have maple syrup and a roaster?
properly? you need special equipment
Not possible without special equipment. Torrefaction is done in an argon filled oven, so that the wood can't burn. If you have oxygen in the oven, the wood just burns.
Now, you can buy torrified wood, and make a neck out of it, but you can not easily torrify wood yourself.
