Also remember the preemption law for edged weapons comes to be next month. Starting tomorrow you can carry open or concealed to your hearts content.
Tomorrow's the day y'all! Constitutional Carry becomes law of the land.
LA - PoliticsYou will be able to open or concealed carry a broad sword. 100% serious.
It just prevents local laws from being more restrictive than state law on controlling bladed weapons.
Meaning only switch blades or other automatic knives are illegal.
So I can’t carry one of the knives I use to cut vegetables?
What kind of knife do you use to cut vegetables? Personally I prefer my broadsword.
Katana is also acceptable.
Never thought I'd see the day I'd want to willingly move to Louisiana because I could legally open carry a Katana for self defense.
Anyone want to open a Samurai Deli in BR?
Yes!!! Samurai <insert all his jobs but my favorite was optician>
Samurai Deli!
I like his art
The blade is about 8 inches long and not serated. My grandfather’s cousin was the American champion in fencing, so maybe I have some talent that I need to explore.
You are a ok to carry just not conceal it as hilarious as that is.
I could carry some vegetables too. Perhaps I’ll run into a criminal who could find me too amusing to attack.
Tldr leave your epee exposed
Is it concealed while in the vegetable?
So you can't have a knife hidden in a vegetable to make it look like a vegetable but if you stabbed it into the vegetable with the handle sticking out you're good.
Edit: disguised weapons are ok it seems. Knife in a zucchini go!!!!
Oh yeah, my nephew's great grandmother invented the plunger.
Thanks for the chuckle
Yes you can
What the hardest part of a vegetable to eat? The wheelchair.
OMG
You was still need a conceal carry permit to carry a concealed knife over a certain size or brass knuckles. This state makes my brain hurt.
What if it’s a whole brass glove?
No you don't
But then aren't you really just pistol whipping someone? Luckily though we're ok I was just informed ALL CONCEALED WEAPONS ARE OK. Rushing out to get my cane with conceal sword now!
So when I go to Ren Fest, I don’t have to have my sword zip tied?
Nope
Automatic knives are legal in Louisiana. I have bought several recently.
I've had a SEAL Pup for years that has never seen the light of day. I'm about to get rid of the beard so I can rock a crustache, buy a belt and a cowboy hat, and sport that bad boy on my hip for like two days.
You could’ve been doing that since the state formed in 1812. That is called open carry and it has always been legal.
The new law makes it to where if you want to have your weapon covered by your clothes without a permit, you can. You could always have carried it, just not covered up.
Perfect, now I can walk around Walmart with Blackfyre at my hip
It is a shame everything is shit here, but hey, at least I can live out my anime dream of wielding a pistol and sword at the same time… 🥲
That's the attitude!
We got rid of the switchblade ban.
Push button and otf is legal in much of the state. Except for places like New Orleans that for some reason think push button is bad but assisted open is fine.
Yea just reading knife laws here. Kinda insane they are more strict than gun laws. It's just no concealed carry for switch blades and the like now correct?
Yeah, I think there is still length limits. So far as I know the ban on concealed switchblades ended in 22. NAL, and don't know which statute, but the ban on concealed should have ended.
SB 194 preempts local laws on both guns and edged. So, starting next month, switchblades and otf are legal even in NO, BR and Shreveport.
Automatic knives are illegal to carry in Louisiana?
Automatic knives were made legal in Louisiana a few years ago.
Ok great.
Wait, I can't carry a switchblade?
Not concealed.
Unless you have a disabled hand. Folding-blade knives are only legal to carry if it requires two hands to open them, but there's an exception for people who don't have two working hands.
Automatic knives were made legal in Louisiana a few years ago.
Oh, I must have missed that. Thanks for the info.
So like I can open carry a Samurai sword?
Yes
What a time to be alive
Local governments and cities uniformly have to follow state law concerning firearms and edged weapons. Which means open and concealed carry of edged weapons like a bowie knife, pocket knife, or sword will be allowed statewide. Whether in New Orleans or out in the sticks. Places like New Orleans can't have local ordinances regulating guns or edged weapons.
Wonderful summary, many thanks
How about while on private property? AKA LARF
Yes private property can still make their own rules. Preemption only applies to public property and governments.
I was wondering the same thing
Agree 100% the funny thing is the last time that happened “republicans” changed their tune real fast and went in on gun control laws. Just turned out to be the same time minorities were beginning to hold marches and protests while legally armed.
You definitely need to charge your phone.
hey man i’m taking my just got home after hours out of the house shit n scroll. phones will be charged and showers taken as soon as i get the hell off reddit lol 😂
Hey those getting home shits are worth the scroll 😂. Ain't no place like home to take a proper defication.
I lol'd

One of my friends said yesterday that he got so mad at Walmart that he almost pulled his gun. I believe flooding the streets with more guns is only going to lead to more senseless murders.
So just gonna throw this out there...find a new friend.
He's not my friend he's my husband's friend. I believe he's has cognitive issues due to old age. I spoke with him about seeking medical help and offered to help him if needed. I don't control who my husband is friends with. He's been knowing this man longer than I've been alive so I doubt they will stop being friends because I told him some anonymous person on reddit thinks the know the situation better than me. You're focusing on the wrong part. Even if I got rid of him it still doesn't protect me from you and all the other "good" guys with a gun and zero training.
It was more of a joke though they seem to have anger issues which goes poorly with carrying a lethal weapon. Also I'm 100% for training and against the constitutional carry law so not sure what that last bit was about.
You know the constitutional carry wouldn’t have prevent this one. Your friend needs help. I’m gonna guess he doesn’t have a concealed carry license while carrying so it’s either illegal or he can’t maintain his anger. Most conceal carry folks sort of know when to draw.
Have taken multiple concealed weapons classes. The vast majority of them should not have been approved but I never saw anyone who was not. Many people who were actively looking for ways to shoot people and/or had little/no experience with guns. Like this is the first time ever handling and shooting their weapon.
Most do, but my buddy said when he took his class it was full of people that should be nowhere near firearms. People who just really wanted to justifiably shoot someone.
That’s his opinion honestly. I’m not from this country (a migrant), but I assume it’s in your constitution and everyone deserves that right. I got my citizenship through military service with your country, so I assume I’ve earned that right too. You might be correct, some folks shouldn’t have it. Other states have implemented the same concealed carry and I want to say there are more good folks than bad folks in the world. A concealed carry won’t stop the crazies. They do what they want and a law, bill or sign will not stop them.
Yes it’s his opinion, and trust me I’ve heard some really dumb people talk about this topic. You are right laws generally won’t stop people who want to commit crimes from committing them, but that logic is flawed. Laws are deterrents generally, and not preventions. Nothing is ever 100% effective, but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have rules since 1% of people may break them.
Happy Fourth man. Some things we can’t control.
He said he has a CC license.
Knife AND gun fight in Shreveport Walmart not too long ago.
30 minutes
I feel this law is going to hurt kids the most. More adults carrying firearms leaving them around their house for their children to pick up.
Yep. I am a gun owner with a child and I am obsessive about safety. Safe, trigger lock, only one loaded weapon with nothing chambered which has manual and palm safety. Other guns are kept locked and separate from ammunition and magazines. I went to an acquaintances house with two toddlers. While I was there he lost his chambered gun in the couch his toddlers were watching TV on. Needless to say I never went back. Personally I think safety training should be required to even own a gun. Offer it as a free service through state government. Why this is even an argument confuses the hell out of me.
If the other 28 states that already did this are any indication, then violent crime will actually drop slightly (questionable as to if it's statistically significant). Seriously, the people you need to worry about were already violating weapon carrying laws. It's only the people you don't need to worry about who are impacted by this.
That's a gun control organization mate. Its stats aren't any more believable than the NRA's. Now, I'm sure the data is real, it's just heavily cherry picked and misrepresented.
John Hopkins University isn't a trusted source...what source would you say is legit on this issue?
John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. It was part of the school that was funded by gun control mega donor Michael Bloomberg for the explicit purpose of generating gun control propaganda. It's very similar in its mission to "The Trace," which is another one of his many little proxy organizations. These sources are no more reputable than "American Rifleman," which is one of the NRA's publications.

Nah, most of them are saving their powder for Jan 6 2025.
At which point they would find out how much their powder matters against the military.
My guess is very very little.
Don't trip and shoot ya balls of y'all.
The French Quarter is gonna be a mess and I see lots of felonies from people becoming constitutional carry idiots. Granted we already have problems with guns in the quarter. Now we will have people thinking they are good but didn’t do their homework and being idiots.
Was going to get my CCP but decided to wait. I’m moving to the woodlands next month so it makes no sense to get a ccp and an LTC. they don’t transfer.
Here’s to online shopping, grocery delivery, and streaming media. Anything to avoid the over-armed and under-educated yokels. Thanks Governor Landry for speeding us towards Armageddon. Bless your lizard heart!
Just make sure you tip. Delivery drivers dont get danger pay
I’m a very good tipper. Maybe we should start a GoFundMe for body armor for Door Dash drivers.
Hey now, don’t insult lizards like that!
I’ve already got a concealed carry license. Military veteran with ample training. So I’m not excited.
Crazy idea...requiring people to get training and a license to operate something that can kill people.
COMMON SENSE IS FOR THE LIBTARDS. JUST IGNORE LOUISIANA'S MURDER RATE
Where does the murder rate actually come from?
Statistics are well and good, but dont tell most of the story. Basically....for simple minded people.
So you're arguing that gun laws don't affect the murder rate?
You know, the single thing that makes murder way easier than any other method?
You sure you want to do that?
I have no problem defending my point. You are trying to use a statistic that does not paint the whole picture. You are also assuming people are ready to kill at any moment.
Let me ask this simple question. If I break into your house with a machete in the middle of the night, do you want to reach for your gun, or for a broomstick?
What you'd be doing wouldn't be considered a murder, so it wouldn't get caught in the murder statistics
Propensity towards crime is absolutely socioeconomic, but let's not play pretend and go to LA LA land where easy access to guns doesn't greatly increase the murder rate.
There's a reason why the deep south has such sky high murder rates while also having the most lax gun laws.
Louisiana has a murder rate near 16 times higher than Europe. It's also over 3 times the American national average.
It's very telling that, even with Chicago in it, Illinois has a murder rate of less than half of Louisiana
Responsible gun owners support responsible gun laws. To let any idiot have unfettered access without any training or licensing requirements is flat out dumb and bad policy. It's so obviously driven by corporate donations it's sickening.
ETA: 85% of homicides are committed by firearms. Sure, there's some other things that can be used, but guns make it easy. I don't think it's crazy to try and make it hard.
You didnt answer my simple question. Turn down the emotion. If I came into your house with a machete, would you rather have a gun to fight me or another machete?
That's because your hypothetical isn't relevant to the discussion.
Having a gun for home defense is entirely possible within the framework of gun control.
The fact that you prefer a gun for defense means you're admitting that guns are the most effective tool for killing.
Great, now we are on the same page.
Now, don't you think we should maybe make it harder for the people doing the home invasion to get weapons?
I think that's common sense.
A gun for home defense is pretty useless if you don't know how to use it. Mandated training, licensing, storage and registration requirements are all common sense and none of those would stop you from using it for home defense.
Why do you refuse to answer a simple question?
Unless you're so- called African American. This law did not apply to us. We will get shot by a race soldier.
Now the cops just get to assume everyone is carrying without any proof, doubly so for minorities
They already assume that anyways.
That was the plan all along!!
There's already some controversy about it in New Orleans.
THIS is why I’m getting the fuck out of Louisiana. We have murders literally everyday and it’s always some crazy shit OR a domestic issue. Yeah, let’s let people walk around with swords and shit. And guns. Bc why not? Get out while you still can!!
Just so you know, 29 states or majority of the US have laws that are exactly like this. So keep that in mind if moving. Open or concealed carry, guns, knives, and swords without a permit.
Does that make Louisiana any less dangerous? We are one of the most dangerous states to live in. Education is almost the bottom. But atleast I can carry a sword or gun everywhere I go.
No, just saying the same laws are widespread. So if its a factor or deterrent to you moving somewhere it probably helps to have a list.
How are people prepared to draw their weapon out in someone? Like that’s just wild to me. Having a weapon is a huge responsibility. Idk… Earth is weird.
They aren’t. If you go to /r/CCW you can see a ton of people who “train” but still aren’t ready.
Here’s a problem discussed on WWNO today I hadn’t even thought of - under consent decree, law enforcement obviously can’t stop and frisk, but they can ask someone to empty their pockets if it looks like there may be a gun, and in turn ask to see the permit. It’s how they occasionally find illegal weapons. This law says they can’t do that anymore.
So now they will just assume you are carrying.
And act accordingly.
So we can wander around Louisiana like pirates starting tomorrow?
Um... Yeehaw?🤔
“It’s a set up” 😂😂😂
The law of the land or law in some backasswards enclave that tries to be a state?
This is why y’all are last in education in the US
It’s going to be so much fun to explain to idiots why this doesn’t mean they can come into my bar open carrying. I have enough trouble from people who actually went thru the process for it. I’m sure untrained morons will be so much more reasonable.
I am absolutely certain this will NOT make things safer. Just make it easier for people to reach for a gun when angry.
I'm still gonna be staying under a roof all day, and checking my fire extinguisher, as usual.
Stupidity governs
Literally, the law was passed multiple times by a vast majority and got vetoed by the governor twice. The third time is the charm. Welcome to democracy. Leave if you don't like it.
Can’t wait for the murder rate to rise. -____-
And which party always plays up the crime rate to get or keep power?
Was nice knowing y'all. My idiot dad was bitching that schools are still technically gun free zones.
Dad is probably smarter than you for sure. No criminal is gonna respect the law to begin with, much less do something now with constitutional carry, but schools do seem to be a target that needs protecting. At the end of the day, the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good one. If you wanna argue with that, you can argue with the countless veterans and police I've talked to because if anyone knows about putting down criminals and bad people, it's them.
Louisiana is the 28th state to approve constitutional carry. I don't expect any major changes. Criminals who carried before will continue to. Law abiding gun owners will have an easier option now as well. Taking some classes for cc is definitely advisable though. You don't get the same protections as a true ccw holder. One of the most notable, no carrying within a 1,000 ft of a school zone.
You take that logic and common sense outta here!
Like you, I don’t really expect any real changes. The folks that were carrying illegally still will and the people that were legit ccw’ing already were. Biggest change is one less tax to the state.
Sorry mister, forgot where I was for a minute...
There may not be major changes because we already have problems with guns and shooting.
How do you think this will go?
Oh wow. Logic!
My concealed carry permit just expired (or is about to) so I got an email wanting me to renew it. I guess I'll pass.
If you value CC reciprocity(being able to CC in other states that acknowledge LA’s CCL), the CCL can help you there.
Plus more legal protections with a CCL
Explain your reasoning?
I have my lifetime veteran CCL . . . The only benefit I see for it now is being able to cc legally in some other states.
Reciprocity, and there were some new laws passed to strengthen protections in the special session im pretty sure. I can dig them up and get back to you
I’d appreciate that. Thank You
Is this supposed to be a good thing?
It is a good thing.
Joy.
I think you mean, oyez.
Can someone tell me why this should be concerning? Would people with malicious intentions just do what they want with weapons anyway?
Welcome to r/Louisiana If a normal legal carrying citizen carries... it's the end of the world. Meanwhile a bunch of people where shot the last few days. One trigger puller was a minor. But nooooo... crime isn't an issue.
And you think that's going to happen less when more people are carrying guns?
Right because people who followed the law previously, and didn’t carry concealed with a CCL, will now find the urge to start shooting people.
Yo, Louisiana! Time for Robocop. It’s come to this. Not even safe for Florida Man. Hehehe
Are bandoliers legal now too?
Is the katana considered concealed if it’s in its sheath at my hip
Nope, if it's visible it's open carry. Doesn't really matter though because most bladed weapons can be carried open or concealed.
Aye !
Now that you can carry your gun, I hope you are not scared anymore.
You could always carry a gun, it's just before it had to be open carry. Now you can carry openly or concealed, dealers choice.
I still recommend taking the course and getting a permit. Now you don't have to but I think it's worth the time and money.
How is the “Louisiana shoots more of their people than any other state” going for ya.
Am I wrong? Louisiana has the Highest gun murder rate ( per 100,000) in the U.S.
Great…dozens of mall ninja morons are rejoicing.
Guys carrying machetes, katanas, broadswords or any other large bladed “arm” will be shot by the PD because they have to draw it to drop it and the cops will take that as a threatening action (from 15-20 feet away of course)
Why would they have to drop it? If police disarm you it'll be the same way they do with handguns. They do it and it'll stay sheathed.
Yes, it's the "I Have a Small Penis Law".

welcome back to America.

Whoops. Louisiana (28.2) is second to Mississippi (29.6)
Here is the link to rate of firearms deaths by state.

Back to the old west People need to practice their quick draw.
The old west wasn't like the movies.. Strict gun control laws were the norm.
Fascinating article, thanks for sharing.
There are a lot of interesting articles showcasing history from mythology on the matter. I'd encourage anyone and everyone to go down rabbit holes on the mythology we're sold as history.
Never forget that the shootout at the O.K. Corral was due to a bunch of drunk fuck wads breaking city laws about carrying firearms.
Open carry is already legal and has been as far as I can remember.
I think you mean the Old South and prepare for dueling.
Now people with bad intentions can see exactly who the moron John Wayne wannabes are! Open carry makes zero sense other than announcing to the world you’re a scared little bitch.
You could already open carry without a permit in Louisiana. This just extends it to concealed carry. Also say what you will about open carry but I'm not fucking with somebody if they're open carrying. Not worth getting shot or stabbed.
But how do you know the people not open carrying aren’t carrying?
The amount of morons I see with open top holsters is insane. I could walk up behind them and take their pistol before they even had a clue what’s happening. Permitting is also there to ensure people know how to do things correctly. People need to know how to carry if they’re going to.
SWEEEEEEEEEEET!
Can I carry brass knuckles yes or no
Sorry can't conceal carry brass knuckles without a concealed carry permit just a Glock.
Can I conceal flashbangs?
Just have to wear them openly
This stupid fucking shithole.
Pretty pumped about it! One of the main reasons I voted for Landry…
Can someone summarize the edged weapons preemption?
