I've seen first hand what activist investors will do to companies. Sometimes it's pushing an agenda, sometimes it's seeking profits regardless of the consequences. Based on a lot of public backlash against Disney, this doesn't seem like a move designed for profit and to gain popularity because it clearly alienates a large portion of their customer base / audience and is fueling a narrative that counters their "wholesome image".
It would seem that the business savvy move would be to position themselves as politically neutral as possible and put forth some sensible messaging about inclusion and diversity while understanding traditional values or some other PR bullshit that would go over with everyone. Instead they seem to be taking the position that one side is a bunch of bigots and we're doubling down on what we're doing in spite of the backlash.
Some people really think capitalism has a set of morals or ethics or aligns with any one group.

In movies with talking snowmen, toys and monsters some people are worried about normalizing something that plainly exists in the world.

Where I live they've been boycotting Disney for a few years now because of that, although I don't think it's that deep and the purpose is to fuck with people's morals and whatnot, they're just doing whatever's gonna make them more money.
