Same as the urban myth about when the polytechnics in the UK all got university status. They had to think up new names and the obvious one for thier city or locaton was usually already taken by an older university.
The story goes that Newcastle Poly considered for some time becoming the City University of Newcastle-on-Tyne.
Reminds me of walking by Manchester Metropolitan University. Had a huge MMU outside one building, except they’d kind of positioned it so that as you approached and first saw it it was backwards.
Most freshmen go through a CUM University of sorts. It’s part of the higher education curriculum really along with relearning how to wet the bed or floor.
