My umbilical hernia is about four years old I’ve trained my core and kept it at bay, and it never bothers me really. The other day I noticed I’ve got a new inguinal hernia on my left side no real pain, but more discomfort from just knowing it’s there. I do kettlebell training and play basketball regularly I’m getting a “belt” I guess to be able to continue until eventually I get surgery is this an alright idea? And second question I will be traveling to Key West Florida from Texas next month for a vacation and read that it can be dangerous to fly, has anyone flown when having a hernia are there things I should look out for. I’d really like to go on the trip
I appreciate your response I actually came across your YT before finding this sub! I will definitely be following and using your channel. Of course I have plans on getting it surgically repaired at some point unfortunately right now I do construction and don’t really have the means, and possibly not anytime soon. I will be taking a deep dive into your channel, but do you think it’s smart for me to put a little extra focus into my lower abdomen when working out?
That’s awesome you found my channel! I wouldn’t put additional focus on your lower abdomen. Just really focus on breathing technique and form when you do anything physical - on the job, lifting weights, etc. Think of this like a tear in your jeans and the more you are not careful, that hole just gets a little bigger with each instance.
Gotcha! Again much appreciated hopefully I can keep you updated on the progress as I work through your program
Yes of course! Let me know how things go!
I had surgery for my left-side inguinal three months ago and just got a hernia on the right side 😩. My surgeon reassured me that travel/flying is ok with a reducible hernia. I also got a belt, but he said it wouldn't protect/help much, but if it makes me feel better (in my head), then sure.
I'd recommend that if you have an inguinal on one side and you can live with it, wait it out until/if the other side pops, then get both fixed.
Sorry to hear about the new one! Hopefully you’re healing well from the surgery. I’m going to go as long as I can provided there’s no complications and hopefully the opposite side doesn’t follow suit anytime. Thanks for the reply!
I feel your pain. I had my left side fixed 15yrs+ ago. My right side fixed about 6wks ago. And a week later discovered that I have a recurring hernia on the left side. Absolute nightmare and now require open surgery as opposed to laparoscopic
I found the best way to manage my discomfort with hernia prior to repair was avoiding foods and drinks that caused bloating, which turned out to be eliminating tons of vegetables. Also no beer or carbonated bevs. I was fine lifting and traveling with a hernia for a long time. Got it repaired and flew two weeks post op and was fine as well.
Thank you! I’m a relatively healthy person I don’t drink, and normally stick to an anti inflammatory diet although cutting some veggies out will be a rough one. Did you cut salads out?
Yeah I used to eat a bunch of huge kale salads. They do not exist in my diet anymore.
I've had one on the left side for 12 years (due to be fixed next month as one on the other side is bothering me about a year old on the right).
I've travelled all over the place, Cuba, China several times, Bali, all over Europe, Florida, India etc etc. Surgeon said chances of it getting strangulated is about 1 in 400. Had a family friend in his 70's playing squash and the ball burst his hernia though!
Thank you for the reply! I guess it’s just a numbers game at this point! Really stinks to have these things happen hope you have a speedy recovery!
71 COME SEPTEMBER 8TH 2023,short story over 3 years right side inguinal=work out 4 days a week/do my SHAOLIN KEMPO MARTIAL ARTS,only work 15 to 20 weeks year now semi retired=stay, always engage core as it strengthens muscles, less apt to get stomach pain, which you will get if you avoid core exercises ,most adults=85% do not exercise on a regular basis=thats a death sentence if you have a hernia= and for you muscle heads in construction=breathe out when you pick heavy weighted objects up=never hold your breathe=hernia down the road...................as you pick up off ground gradually breathe out, takes the pressure off your lower back and groin and stomach.....not a rocket science, just common sense......"doctor,no pain no surgery",that's why i still have not done anything except proper movements and being conscious of what you can and cannot do,small price to pay for risky pain in the ass surgery with many flaws=TRUSS BELTS WORK BIG TIME=DON'T LISTEN TO THE BS OUT THEIR,I KNOW..........................................71 YEARS 9/8/1952
I’ve had an inguinal hernia on my right side for almost 3 years and have flown about 3 times with no problem. I don’t wear a hernia belt at all as I find it makes it worse for me. I am a personal trainer and lift weights 5x per week. I suggest you do get it surgically fixed as hernias never heal themselves.
I have a YouTube hernia playlist you can checkout that goes through exercise modifications and other things to do to keep your hernia reduced to “maintain” it.
