This is probably a dumb question, but me and my buddies are riding to Yosemite National Park this weekend 174-200 mile ride. So, my left fork is leaking pretty good and I ordered a fork seal kit for my bike, but its possibly not coming till the weekend of going on this trip... now I was wondering if I'll make it there and back. We have choppers so we ain't going super fast, so in my mind I'm thinking cruising speed and no abuse on the bike and we'll make it there and back home?
Tie a rag around the leak to help soak it up
This worked! Thank you!
Tie a bandanna around it and go
I have rode with them leaking. Unless a lot of oil is gone you won't know the difference except when you clean the bike.
I did the same and made it home! Thank you!
Glad it worked out for you.
ur fine
I sure was lmao. I was overthinking for nothin lol
i understand it friend. i got a tick in my motor riding to sturgis in 2009 while going thru vegas it was 117. i rode the whole way there with my ear down by the gas tank listening. fuckin nutso.
Stay hyper aware of that oil. Thoroughly check your front brake disc and tires as often as possible.
I did! Kept wiping the oil off the fork, kept it chill. Did 500mi in total, hell yea!
Make a DIY version of a seal mate out of a bottle & try cleaning out the seal of any debris.
If you get AAA now, you can use it by the time this weekend comes around. Roughly $100 for the year and it pays for itself using it once.
You have to add motorcycle coverage to one of the plans. Or if you have the plan that covers RVs it will cover motorcycles. Just adding the info so people don't miss it and just think the basic one covers bikes.
Good call I should have added that information myself
No need for triple AAA!
As others have said.. makes seal mate out of a plastic bottle.. then BOUNCE THE HELL out of the front end to get more leaking oil out . then clean the hell out of your fork leg and if it’s on a brake side.. clean the rotors and caliper.
After you have everything cleaned off tie a bandanna or two around the leg to catch remaining leaking oil .
200 miles is nothing. It'll make the trip fine. Minor inconvenience of harsher absorption of bumps at front, greasey dirt seen at seal area. Run too many thousands of miles, may score the tube's, needing replacement, in addition to the seal. IMO that's not a big enough reason to not ride either.
That's crazy people here would say it's fine.
If your fork seal is leaking really badly then it could cause a catastrophic accident. WHY???
If you understand basic mechanics of the forks then you will understand that fork fluid SLOWS the dampening of the forks.
IF YOU HAVE TWO FORKS YES 2 AND THEY ARE DAMPENING AND NOT REBOUNDING THE SAME THEN ONE WILL BOTTOM OUT AND ONE WILL REBOUND. WHAT DOES THIS CAUSE??? WOBBLES WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN? CAUSE YOUR FRONT WHEEL ISNT BALANCED.
I've done at home simple mechanical fixes, spark plugs, fork rebuilds, oil change etc etc. That's crazy these fking reddit mechanics are so stupid.
If its leaking too much it may be a problem , keep the oil away from disks and caliper to avoid mishap
It doesn’t take long. Just fix it. Go to a Harley shop and buy the parts.
Send it.
