A Florida panther attacks and kills an unfortunate raccoon

That's just insane that this panther could be there watching you mow the lawn, waiting for its chance.
It should be noted that cougar attacks on people in general are incredibly rare and that Florida hasn’t had any documented instances of such an event occurring within the past hundred years. They should absolutely be given respect for the harm they can cause, but a given cougar isn’t looking at people as food.
All the cougars that considered people as food were probably slaughtered quickly. Artificial selection.
How is that artificial? It's the same thing as any other animal except we use advanced tools like guns.
He's referring to selection being "man-made or man-produced"
Exactly. I mean that every time one of these animals harms a person, they are punished by other humans. Eventually they learn that what looks like an easy meal can be deadly later
"Learning" here could mean that an individual saw another fellow cat be killed by humans or just that those with the tendency to attack humans don't get to reproduce because they die young.
And not many animals do this, btw. Humans are quite good at associating with each other and defending themselves in group.
I mean, it feels weird to call it "natural selection" when humans do it, but that's sort of what it is
This is good to know, not that I plan on visiting FL ever again lol.
Plenty of small easy prey in Florida. There’s also documented historical respect to the species that decimated them to near extinction. We are not ‘prey’ because the man eaters get exterminated
That makes enough sense.
Nah, cougars aren't like leopards, they tend to avoid humans as much as possible, some leopards instead develop a taste for human meat but you won't be surprised, they are among the most prolific human and primate killers on the planet
