Hello, i was wondering what is the most fun/interesting engineer elite spec to play. Im most interested in mechanist but i see alot of hate towards it. Holosmith is cool too, but i want to hear your favorite. Thanks alot if you reply!
I still can't believe that one mech is all we have. Thought for sure they'd made it so ugly and obtrusive in order to sell replacement skins.
Try them out in sPvP, they're all good in their own way.
Holosmith is my favorite class in the game. I tend to gravitate to the low skill floor/high skill ceiling classes. It's mobile enough, and has all the utility the engineer is used to, plus some fantastic damage, in both condi and power. If holosmith had a boon support/healing build, I am pretty sure it would be the only class I would play.
Scrapper is in a weird spot atm. Needs some fine-tuning from anet to make it better as a boon source/support. Otherwise, it's good for damage, and by nature it's tanky as all get-out. I use it for open world zerg stuff, mainly.
Mechanist can do just about everything. It's got a really good condi spec, a good (albeit a bit braindead) power spec, and a very good support spec. I generally only use mechanist to play boon support/heal.
No wrong choices here, really. :-)
If you like to play Rumble from LoL then Holosmith will be a blast. It is for me.
I think Mechanist get a lot of hate cause its easy and effective. When it first launched all you would see is a sea of bots. But who cares? Play what you want to play.
It honestly depends a lot on the content you want to play. If you're doing mostly open world stuff, some fractals, maybe a bit of WvW here and there, then each one of them is definitely good enough so pick the one that speaks to you the most.
If you're gonna go deep into endgame content like raids or high lvl fractals, then you're gonna want to have a very specialized build that is great at doing the job it's meant to do. This is when it becomes a matter of knowing the meta.
Same with PvP, mechanist right now is not very strong, a holosmith or scrapper would be much more viable, but if you're not playing to get to the top of the ladder, then you can still win games and have fun as mechanist.
Personally I've been really enjoying scrapper for PvE, but I'm probably gonna try mechanist soon. I like the idea of having a companion that fights with you, but I did not enjoy ranger very much, so hoping it will be a better fit.
I've gotten a liking to holo, huge damage but it's squishy.
Mecha is not bad but I found it got boring because how easy it can be depending on your build.
I never liked scrapper.
I've just gotten my engineer alt to lvl a few nights ago 80 and am working on a boon support/quickness scrapper build.
I'm still unlocking abilities and traits, but I'm already loving the consistent swiftness and superspeed uptime.
I only play engineer. Holo has kept my attention for the longest by far. I play mech in group stuff to fill roles. Open world condi mech is ok.
I really love my Cele Mechanist for open world. Has a good mix of survivability, damage, and control, and I find the mech abilities to be a lot more impactful and fun than most of the toolbelt abilities.
The Mechanist is all right for all PvE, it's just that the spec is another one of these classic ANet's wasted opportunities. The mech is huge, uncustomizable (mostly) and commonly considered to be an eyesore. Also makes irritating noises. So much of the spec's basic functionality is baked into the robot that if you walk up to an enemy and start your auto-attack, 80% of your job is done. So not the most engaging playstyle, and you can argue that it's too much buck for too little work.
Also, for me personally, the Mechanist loses quite a bit of Engineer flavor. Makes utility skills that aren't signets or weapon kits feel sucky (because you get like half a skill basically, you lose the toolbelt part in favor of mech skills).
Still, Mechanist is a great spec for group PvE (support and both dps versions are fine), and an absolute monster in the Open World. If you go the Cele route, you can run perma Alac and Quickness for a solid 17-18k dps open world monster. Or you can drop perma quickness for superpowered survivability with signets. Or for a genuinely two-button Low-Intensity build in which I think it's literally impossible to die (because you heal for like 1200 per second on top of a significant chunk of barrier).
My personal fav Engineer is the Scrapper, due to Superspeed. Scrapper turns strike damage into barrier and runs around like an Energizer bunny. When you get used to it, everything else feels like a bit of a bummer. Also, if you have SotO, all Engineer specs can use the Hammer now, which is awesome :).
Mechanist gets hate because it's very strong while requiring very little mechanical/technical skill, and also because the jade bots are just friggin huge and clog up people's screens.
Scrapper is my favorite of the three. It's tough as nails, has a good amount of skill expression potential but isn't ridiculously hard to pick up, and can provide a ton of group utility that lets you feel like you're carrying. Also hammer is super fun, but that's not locked to just scrapper anymore.
