Great review about Mavericks
I got the mav because I have some extremely limited truck stuff I routinely have to do as a homeowner.
I could do multiple trips to lowes with my Subaru outback for certain things like patio pavers or lumber of limited lengths, etc.
But when i needed to get 4x8 sheetrock or plywood i had to rent a pickup or wait for a buddy with a truck to help me out. Or haul a couch to the dump, or pickup a new lawnmower. The list hoes on.
The mav is the perfect truck for people like me. Im not towing a giant boat around, im not a full time construction worker. I just need a pickup sometimes and now i have one that is also not a ridiculous monstrosity.
I tell people “I don’t own a farm, I just need to go to Lowe’s”
I literally own a farm... and for the last 7 years a hybrid fusion was my work truck.
My new mav is more than enough for a hobby farmer.
My 2014 VW golf was my work truck. I literally crammed a fucking door into it and nearly had the tail gate closed. Yard work? No problem, fold down the back two seats and drop a tarp in. 12 bags of much in. Four box wood plants - loaded…with only mildly substantial ceiling scraping lol
That being said…that’s why I’ve become interested in the maverick. Four seat capacity of my car and a reasonably sized bed for a dude who DIY’s most house work. Hybrid drivetrain options.
Man I wish I had money right now
I need the pickup space, not the pickup power.
Besides, my planned farm truck is an old army 2-door humvee. Does everything I would need it to.
The best farm pickup in the world is a beat up old Ford Ranger. You can drive it through the fields, carries all your tools, you can drive it on the two tracks in the woods, cheap to fix, and it has heat and AC when it's cold or hot out. (the Humvee falls flat on its face with the last three)
My grandpa just bought a Ford Ranger as a farm truck and I've got to agree with this comment. The thing is a mountain goat, comfortable, and many other benefits.
I would MUCH rather have a Ranger than some idiotic side-by-side for five times the cost.
Aww yeah, they're fucking cool.
I will never forgive ford for not giving up back the 90s ranger. The new ranger just isn’t the same nor ever will be
My man, the original Ranger lived until 2012. My current daily driver is older than that.
And there's noooooooooooo chance a modern Ranger that size would come close to passing crash tests. Plus, customer tastes just changed. Remember, everybody abandoned the actually compact pickup, not just Ford. Be thankful for the Maverick. It's about as good as it'll get while also being a profitable business case.
When i reach retirement age i am going to try and get a well maintained 90s ford ranger, similar to how i see boomers currently picking up vintage 60s and 70s cars.
I had a 1990 ford ranger XLT 4.0 I loved that truck still my favorite
I wish they made rangers with the inline 6 that they put in F-150s. Could you imagine?
___
Anyway, I really like my '97 with a 5spd & a 4 banger. It's perfect.
I had a 94. Blue. Super cab XLT 4.0 with the 5spd manual. Sold it in 2009 with 250k on the odometer. Miss that truck monthly.
Sir that is not a a “Ford Ranger” that is aFord (expletive) Ranger
Bonus points for mounting a fake ‘Ma Duce’ on there for looks!
Gonna steal this….. lol.
Even if you have a farm, the maverik is ideal as a primary transport vehicle.
Samesies, except I have no friends.
Hi. But we have a Maverick. Is it not friend?
It's my suburban pickup. It does small jobs for me. Loads from Lowes for projects at home. Hauling my kayak places. And some other odd jobs that I don't want to do with a different vehicle. It's perfect for me. Plus having a hybrid is nice.
You have some sort of rack system for the kayaks or you just tying them down in the bed?
I had a roofrack on my outback that’s obviously not compatible with the mav, and kayak season is upon us.
I was planning on tying two down in the bed but im concerned about how much overhang there’ll be.
That’s why I have a small 4x8 trailer.
It's a very European thing to have a small trailer. Folding or otherwise. Super handy. Very few things a hatchback and a trailer cannot get moved.
I’ve got a 20+ year old F150, and I love it. That said, if I’m hauling anything significant, I’m putting it on a trailer. It’s just much more flexible and convenient.
My truck is for dragging trees, driving through deep snow and back in the woods, etc. There are actually times that I need the ground clearance and 4wd. There are times when I would like a nice shiny truck, but I’d probably feel bad the first time I knocked a mirror off by hitting a tree.
Uhaul can and should fill the same niche in the US. It's like $20 a day to rent a utility trailer. Too few people think like this.
I've brought back sheetrock in my Forester. Very slowly over bumps. By the time I've finished rebuilding this house I'll have enough money for a truck
You are not the people he is talking about. You have an actual use for a truck. The person making near a million a year that only pays other people to do things for them is the kind of person who they're talking about. The ones with a pickup truck at 100k miles without a single scratch on it
It who cares. Would you say the same thing if they owned a Porsche, mercedes, or any other luxury car that would cost the same?
Tbf I own a construction business and often push my 350 to its limits. I’ve put 200k miles on it - no scratches.
I'm right there with you but had to get a Tacoma instead for reliability. Mavericks were the same price as my new taco at the time anyway
I was going to keep my aging Subaru and buy a box trailer that could hold a sheet of plywood. But it developed wrist pin issues so I considered a truck. Ended up 4Runner because my most regular cargo is 4 nearly adult sized teens. I keep a trailer (open) specifically for hauling and this setup should work for everything except Sheetrock and I hate sheet rocking anyway
I have a fishing boat and a utility trailer, and I just use a 20 year old trailblazer for them and drive a sonata regularly. I feel like it's common sense to just have what you need and save the money for later, not for clout.
You could’ve gotten a 40mpg minivan to do the same things though. With a lift kit and AT tires light trails are no problem either.
There are 40 mpg minivans that start in the low $20's?
The only cheap minivans are clapped out sugar and Cheerios crusted mall cruisers and they get 20 mpg going downhill.
If you really want to compare it strictly on mpg vs price, 22/26 for maverick vs 36/36 for sienna. Asssuming 50% of each, its 24mpg for $27k vs 36mpg for 38k. That's 50% better mileage for 37% more capital, and again it's a more useful vehicle for aforementioned reasons.
Assuming gas stays at $5 and you drive 15k miles a year, the Maverick uses 208 extra gallons (rounded) at a cost of $1041.65 per year to operate.
$11,000 yielding $1041.65 per year equates to 9.4%. Even if your credit is terrible, it's a better financial choice. I won't get into Ford vs Toyota reliability, but I'd trust Toyota to go 200k+ without major issues. The only issue is availability.
The hybrid maverick gets better fuel economy than the Sienna
Hybrid Minivan is twice to four times the cost of a Maverick xl hybrid with market adjustments. It’s a poor comparison
Why 40 mpg minivan when 40 mpg Maverick does the trick?
Kevin, is that you...? LoL
This is not the Kevin you seek
More seats, weather protection, security, a bigger space for a roof rack, don't have to lift everything over a high bed, and potentially built in vacuum to clean up the mess.
Because trucks are for hauling raw materials like sand, concrete, rocks, heavy stuff in the bed. If you just need to haul light stuff like drywall/bags of things/wood a minivan is much more convenient to load, park, and drive. Just doesn’t have the weight capacity to fill with concrete.
Wouldn't a $20 a day uhaul pickup rental make more sense?
I live in Virginia Beach next to the largest Naval base in the world. This perfectly describes this area. We’re sea level so all the roads are flat. Yet the roads are filled with guys who live on base or apartments driving full size trucks that will never haul anything more than air.
yes sir 757
Why can't people just buy things they enjoy without some dweeb on reddit judging them for it? This sub is just full of "who needs a big truck like that?!" dudes for some reason. Just enjoy your Maverick, you don't need to hate on other people to justify your use needs. Lots of dudes living at naval bases grew up on farms and dreamed of owning a big truck their whole lives and now they can finally get themselves something cool that they enjoy. This subs responds with "must have a tiny pp" like a bunch of nerds hating on the jocks for banging all the hot chicks. It's pathetic and gross.
I’m sorry my posts hurt your feelings. How is base housing treating you by the way, E2?
I'm sorry that large trucks make you feel butt hurt. I'm not in the military but I respect the kids that choose to give their lives to our country. You're a dweeb.
Ok keyboard warrior. 🙄
Okay dweeb.
I got a 2000 Ford Ranger recently, and I find myself driving it more on these horrible Michigan roads than my Scion tC. Regret not doing it sooner. Insurance fucking sucks though.
Insurance sucks because you're in Michigan.
IDK what you're paying, but down here in Indianapolis I pay under $100/month for:
Have always said this, you see these pavement princesses on the road and some of these guys upgrade the suspension and wheels, tires for no reason at all, no wonder everyone calls them "little dick energy"
Person goes to work. Person gets paycheck. Person spends paycheck on what makes them happy. Reddit user angry
Lol, okay is that why the car loan industry is approaching ridiculous levels with average monthly payments of $800 and many are defaulting? While we all acknowledge that you're allowed to spend your money as desired, the article talks about how the average person is buying too much truck that exceeds their needs. It is also the same folks who will complain about gas prices meanwhile they're driving these tanks around with 20-22mpg.
Car loan industry being a state of bust for the past three years has nothing to do with the conversation of people buying trucks and everything to do with the entire car industry, especially used. “Exceeds their needs” assumes these people bought the trucks to tow. People buy the vehicle they want because they enjoy it, that is their need. Space and to like their vehicle. Who gives a shit about towing capacity. It’s biased hack journalism.
Just enjoy your maverick and let other people enjoy what they drive.
Mentioned it because you mentioned finances, just because you can buy something doesn't mean that it's a wise financial decision to do so. People who are financially illiterate tend to do such foolish things, some are fooled into thinking that bigger is better and this has been the trend with trucks over the last 30 years, they have gotten bigger and yet functionally do not offer much, a small or medium sized pickup will often suffice. The sentiment is across the board which is why the Maverick and many other similar sizes trucks are becoming more popular now and Ford exceeded their expectations with it, smaller trucks and hybrids are economical and practical.
Smoothest asphalt ever laid on Earth?! Take a trip to Pennsylvania.
Or Michigan we have pot holes the size of moon craters.
.... on the freeway
Gloomy and crew, I’ve owned a F350 super cab, a ranger super cab STX, 2 explores, a highlander, a Rav4l and Audi A6 diesel and now the Maverick. This vehicle is a truck with a shorter bed at a reasonable price and gets 90% of the truck stuff done. I love it for what it is it is. I could have what it’s not, but then I would be stuck with that for 100% of the time.
I feel good driving it, the hybrid is awesome gas mileage and stuff fits in the back . Life is good. No if ford can figure out how to better produce them at a reasonable price so we can all have one. There is my opinion.. and my two boys 20yrs old love it. Gas mileage, cost, cool. Factor. It’s got it all. It will be nice when they add the Al la cart options so we can all configure them “our way”. Until then, ,drive one and tell me after 30 days if you aren’t enjoying it. One grumpy old guy who likes trucks, dogs, playing in the back yard and camping at the ocean o in the forest.
Bri
Doing 90 mph.
"Smoothest asphalt ever laid onto this earth". I see someone lives in the EU
Smoothest asphalt ever? This statement would be invalid in Michigan.
The vast majority of full-size pickups never come close to touching the tips of their illustrious limits
That's certainly true. The thing is though if you're buying for practicality then why buy a pickup at all?
For me I’m a home owner and need to do light hauling. And, I like driving a truck.
Yep. This is exactly why I use my Suzuki XL-7 routinely to tow my car hauler trailer around that's typically weighing in around 6,000-6,500lbs loaded.
Sure, factory tow rating on the XL-7 is 3500 pounds, with a weight distributing hitch, but fuck that noise. I do it with a Harbor Freight adjustable hitch that's rated for 5,000lbs and without the WDH so I can gain maximum approval from the online clowns!
I could use the RAM 2500 diesel in the driveway too, that's rated for 19,000 pounds, has FAR better brakes, and all around is magnitudes safer than the XL-7 for towing/hauling, but I sure don't want some dipshit thinking I don't use the full capacity of my truck!
I’m the outlier here; I overloaded my f150 and had to pull over 300ft from the loading dock! Flooring is stupid heavy; the forklift they used to bring the panels should have given me a hint
I’ll say this, 90% of the time I do not need my truck for what I use it for. But 10% of the time I do. I didn’t buy it for all the time I’m not actually gonna need it tho, but for the 10% of the time I do.
I always touch tips in the back of my maverick
This is something that frustrates me to no end among my peers… I get “made fun of” for renting a pickup when needed, or offering to pay to borrow someone else’s truck. I looked it up earlier this week, it’s $55kish for a new half ton series, at least $45k for a decent new BOF midsize truck. A Maverick is too small for my usual needs vs just having a midsize SUV, so I’d be looking at a minimum of $20k for an older used truck to fit our “needs”. I’ll never come close to that just renting a 1500 from Enterprise for a weekend… Our current SUV is paid off, the moment an OEM has a hybrid BOF pickup that sniffs 30 MPG combined, I’d be willing to take on a car payment again.
This article makes some great points.
My first truck was an '84 Mazda. I've watched trucks get bigger and bigger ever since then. I don't drive something to show off, I want practical and fun.
Perfect for hauling a load of mulch and delivering it to by beds with precision!
Oh man, I saw an old beat up Mazda pickup a few weeks ago and I was like, that thing looks pretty cool!
The long waits for deliveries and dealer markups suggest to me that the interest was already there among the 'Americans.' I currently drive an older Dodge Dakota and I was disappointed when they discontinued it, but not as much as I was excited to learn about the Maverick, which will replace it one of these days. I've been holding out hoping for a hybrid 4x4 (edit: AWD; I stand corrected,) and it sounds like my time is coming.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. The problem isn't that Americans are obsessed with the wrong trucks, it's that manufacturers are obsessed with selling the wrong trucks
My understanding is a large part of that comes from the EPA and air pollution standards. Basically, that light and commercial trucks have separate, less stringent, cutouts from cars and sport utility vehicles so it’s cheaper to engineer and make the $60k+ brodozers than it is to make an actually efficient and “clean” small truck. And the extremely high import tariffs on foreign made trucks makes the market anti-competitive for say Toyota to bring in cheaper light trucks.
It’s the chicken tax. And there’s nothing stopping them from just building them in the US. Toyota and Nissan sell a fair number of trucks.
The tariff actually applies to vans too, which a few foreign auto makers sell as well.
So I don’t know if it’s really “anti-competitive”. Just makes anyone that wants to sell them(domestic brands as well) build them in the states.
The chicken tax has work arounds. For years the Japanese manufacturers brought trucks here without beds and installed them once they got to the states. Ford brought the transit connect cargo van here with seats installed in the back to classify them as passenger vehicles, which actually got them fined years later now that I googled it. I’m surprised they lost that suit since Subaru got away with the exact same thing for the entire Brat production run.
Subaru actually sold the seats with their utes, but they were removable by the customer.
Ford just took the seats out as soon as the vans passed customs. They were never sold with the van.
They’re obsessed with money, they make more money off of a fully loaded truck. Mavericks just clog up the production line in their minds.
Hybrid AWD.
I think I'd get rid of my AWD police spec Taurus & my Ranger for an 5-ish year old AWD Hybrid Maverick.
Obviously it'll be a while before that's even possible considering that AWD Hybrid isn't a Maverick trim yet, but boy... What a value.
Its a little unrefined, but damn it hits a sweet spot for an apartment dewller who needs to haul stuff for work.
honest question, whats unrefined about it?
IMO - I'm genuinely impressed by its packaging, and how well thought out it is. The only thing that is kinda dumb n is the little space on the side of the entertainment screen. Seems like they planned on a larger screen then cheaped out or whatever.
The whole infotainment system is glitchy, some of the plastic touches scratch way too easily for a truck, and certian switches being from different part bins between trucks of the same year and trim. the backup camera is laggy, and the throttle response can also be laggy
The engine is a little loud, theres no engine cover, and some of the plastics scratch a bit too easily. All around its a great value, theres just a few areas where quality falls short for a consumer product thats new to the market (Mine is a 22)
The fuel mileage is freaking amazing though, and shuts down the "not a truck" convo with people quickly though.
It literally does everything just good enough. Which I guess is what it's built to do
Edit: Mine is a 22 Ecoboost XLT w/ FX4 and 4k tow
I think this is a great evaluation of the Maverick's weaknesses, though to be honest pretty much everything other than the laggy backup camera and glitchy infotainment is exactly where I'd want corners to be cut on a vehicle like this. Having owned the truck for a couple years I've gotten over the plastic scratching and somewhat cobbled together look of parts of the interior, and lack of engine cover doesn't bother me at all. Interesting to hear from an Ecoboost owner that the engine is too loud and the throttle response can be laggy, when I throw my hybrid in sport mode I find it to be pretty responsive, though I'm sure that has a lot to do with the instant electric torque
I think the throttle is a fly by wire, and my issue with it is that its not always the same amount of lag.
However once it gets past the intial lag, it really does move pretty quick. I agree most of the areas the cut corners on are completly fine, but the infotainment and backup camera are the biggest deals for me. I can still deal with them because its still a great truck, I just feel they should have spent more time refining these two areas before pushing it to market
Laggy backup cameras have gotten auto makers in trouble before.
Part of that is turbo lag. Even though it’s a small turbo, it takes a second to spool up, where the hybrid has that power immediately on tap. I’ve had a couple vehicles with turbo charged engines and experienced it on all of them. It’s exacerbated the bigger the turbo gets too.
Throwing the ecoboost in sport mode gets around the lag pretty well between throttle response and a tendency to keep the rpm a little higher.
You just described turbo lag. If you had a boost gauge you would have a better idea what the throttle responsiveness is.
Responsive, yes. Screaming like a whiny b*tch when full throttle, yes.
Oof. I don’t know what it is about the Maverick, but it just looks so…plain. The price is right, the capabilities are right, but it looks like a forgettable mid-90s Nissan Hardbody.
Maybe I'm misremembering but when I was a teen in the 90s every redneck in highschool drove a little regular cab truck. Sure, some of them lifted them and put huge tires on them, so what? Americans are desperate for small affordable trucks.
High schoolers are not usually able to afford expensive cars and big trucks cost a lot more than an S10 in 2006.
we chose wisely
I thought it was interesting when he said the A/C had trouble maintaining temp. I live in an area that averages about 10º warmer than New Hampshire and I've never had any issue. They don't mention their settings but I keep mine at 74º.
Where I’m at we’ve been at 95-100f and it’s cold in the maverick.
I wonder if it was the EB versus Hybrid.
My Hybrid has the most ridiculously cold AC I've ever had. I live where we regularly have 100+ days in the summer and I have to turn it down every single time.
If I kept it at LO and blowing the whole time I would probably get frost bite.
My 2022 Ecoboost's a/c was not that good. My new Ranger is much better.
I think for most people it’s just the cool factor. America loves trucks, and that’s fine. Just don’t buy a gas guzzling full size (or some mid sizes) pick up truck, and bitch about gas prices.
I got my Maverick at the beginning of this year and love it for feeling like the 90s Ranger I had prior. It is worth the MSRP but not any markup by a dealer. I love getting around 600mi to the tank and doing general truck stuff. I plan on driving it until the wheels fall off that is unless they make a Maverick Lightning which I may trade in for.
An all electric Maverick would take my money
The electric car industry is going to fall off big time in the next 5 years. I just watched a Donut video about how rapidly they are depreciating, the market is on its death bed so I really doubt you'll be seeing an all electric Maverick ever. Ever ever. Seems like a plug in hybrid will be the more likely future.
How about a diesel maverick?
Talk about GAS MILAGE!
Honestly I see these things *everywhere* now and, well, it is making me want to replace my Ranger with one.
Though that said, I still need to tow a converted cargo trailer (into a makeshift RV trailer of sorts) and that still weighs nearly 5k lbs. These max at what limit? 4k? 4.5k?
And if I were to get one, I'd get the Tremor package.
There’s a max at the 4k tow package for the EcoBoost engine. Tremor can’t support that package because the modified front bumper for the improved approach angles for off-roading takes the requisite space needed for the larger radiator and cooling fan in the 4k. Also, the weight rating of the bed capacity is lower on the Tremor because of the delicate off-road suspension.
I have a ‘23 XLT FX4 4K, and have hauled an old 21’ speed boat, 4,200 lb utility trailer, and a 3,700 lb camper. The only differences I feel are a little slower acceleration and more breathing from the turbo, and braking takes more distance - because, physics. Still get 19-23 mpg fully loaded, dependent on drag.
Good to know actually. Thank you!
I genuinely prefer our maverick over our f-150
Hell yes. I prefer the Mav over our Silverado - we use the bigger truck for hauling the big stuff around out on our land, and for doing the 750 mile r/t to visit my MIL, but the Mav is SO much more fun to drive and so much easier in the city. And I can still haul concrete chunks and topsoil in it when I need to.
But how else will people know how big my dick is and that I'm prone to making really bad financial decisions?
Edit: typo
You could always buy a German luxury vehicle which also get bad MPG and are unnecessary but somehow doesn’t catch near amount of shit that trucks do
If my car ever craps out, I'll be looking at a maverick. Though my plans are to drive my car for 20 more years, lol.
Same here (well maybe 10 more years for my car). I'm hoping by that time Ford has worked out all the issues that seem to be peppering this sub and maybe there will be a few more competitors other than the Santa Cruz.
He points out a lot of reasons I bought a Maverick: it’s a hybrid, I can reach into the bed without climbing on something (important when you’re 5’7”), it hauls what I need it to haul and it’s comfortable. Yesterday I took my 81 year old mother-in-law home from the hospital and she got into the truck by herself, and she uses a cane. Yes, she did that and was just released from the hospital. That would’ve been impossible even in today’s Ranger or Tacoma.
I used to have a 2006 Mazda B2300 and have kinda regretted ever selling it. Though bigger, the Maverick makes up for that in spades.
Hanging on to my 07 Ranger until the wheels fall off lol.
However my father just picked up a Mav hybrid and it’s a compelling replacement. If only they offered it in regular cab with a longer bed.
This was #1 on my list but ended up with a frontier because I couldn’t wait on an order. Small trucks like this need to come back en masse!!
I’d be all over an EV maverick. My first car was a 1971 maverick but my next car will be an EV. I walk by a neighbor who has a maverick now and it’s a great size and great looking truck.
I landed on a Ridgeline and it’s perfect for me.
I was considering a maverick but couldn’t find XL and XLT at msrp and going higher in trims didn’t really make sense when I compared to just getting a ridgeline instead
I wouldn't blame the population. It's because manufacturers push big truck for bigger profit margins and because of CAFE regulations.
I like the idea of these trucks, I just wish you could get one with a small extended cab and longer bed like the old rangers
That's my only complaint also. I don't use the back seat too much.
I got a maverick since a) I needed something to at least be able to tow my quad and b) dump runs.
honestly I never considered one until I learned about it and drove one. went from an f150 6ft box to the mav and have never had a more enjoyable ride in my life
it also feels better to not have the 10spd clunk
I got maverick as it’s suitable for my DIY hobby needs. I despise folks driving massive pick up trucks and have nothing to do with their jobs. It’s more like my d**k is bigger than yours.
I love my mav, wish the bed was 6tf tho would certainly help with my loads
It’s true, I sold my F150 years ago and bought a $500 utility trailer that I could tow with a Fusion. It hauled everything I did with my truck.
I've had my Mavericks since 2022 and I still love it. I plan on driving it till the wheels fall off.
I don’t get obsessing over what other people drive. Lots of people use their trucks exactly how their meant to be used, towing and hauling. I towed 9000lbs 600 miles twice a year for the last 4 years, I also off-road with it through my land, and right now it’s filled with construction matieral from work. Yet people probably look at me and think “wow what a waste”. No, I need this.
Because the trucks that don't do anything are pretty obvious to anyone who truly does anything with one? Nothing wrong with pointing at those sorts.
Especially the ones with lift kits and wheel spacers which only make trucks worse at doing actual truck stuff. Spacers are introducing more of a lever effect and a high tongue weight on a trailer will exasperate issues. You'll never see stock trucks snapping an entire wheel off at the bearing hubs at any frequency close to all the worthless modded ones. Lift kits mess with proper trailer pulls too and it's pretty fucking obvious which lifted trucks never go off road where the extra ground clearance might start to even matter.
And all this fad truck buying shit does is drive up prices for people who actually need them. It takes more resources to make a truck. More demand for aluminum, steel, plastics, electronics. More fuel demand, more wear and tear on infrastructure. More space needed to accommodate has lots of indirect costs to everyone else. It's being subsidized more than people want to admit too. Trucks cause far more serious traffic injuries and fatalities, especially to pedestrians.
Then when all these shit modded trucks end up on the used market you have to either ignore them or price in labor and potential stock-class parts to switch it back to an actual useful piece of equipment. So another lose/lose point for the guy who skipped new market but has been further priced out of used largely thanks to the fad buyer class.
This article is a complete joke. I love my Mav. The moment my son said "Dad, I found your pickup" I was hooked. Ordered in Aug 21, got 60K on it already, so I am a fan of the Mav.
That said, if I could afford a deluxe full size pickup I would be all over it. Better ride, quieter, faster, rommier, more features..........the list goes on forever. Just like people move from a small house to a bigger house,
It's human nature.
ETA: To those who say the Mav is easier to drive and park....Yup. You are correct. No doubt. If that's your highest criteria, drive that Mav.
Still, all the other criteria and more importantly, sales figures seem to demonstrate that by and large, WITH EXCEPTIONS, people will gravitate to the nicer, more luxurious option if they can afford it. Ride in the back of a Mav then ride in the back of an F150. Lemme know how it goes.
I've got both and I never really noticed what a pain it was to maneuver the F150 in parking lots etc until the Maverick finally arrived. I would much rather drive the Maverick.
Ya, we have a Mav and a Silverado and I vastly prefer the Mav for anything it is capable of handling.
Moving from an f150 to a maverick just means you get to switch your brain from truck mode and parking in the back then walking, to getting that nice cozy spot up front
Bro I have a gen 3 raptor and a Maverick. I live in Orlando and do roofing. I pretty much only drive the maverick. Been considering dumping the raptor for a new m4 or Porsche 911gts.
Is part of that "afford" equation factoring fuel economy?
I could've happily bought an F250 and would've found uses for all that capacity (already have helper air bags on the Mav if that says anything)....
But I'd be getting 1/3 the fuel economy of my hybrid. I drive 25k miles a year and my fuel savings practically cover most of the loan payment.
Some people care about the environment, but you could get a Lightning or a Rivian as a more luxe option. I'd get a Rivian if I could afford it.
I take very long road trips where waiting for charging two times a day would be problematic.
Can't wait for the Ramcharger to come out. Electric with on-board gas generator like a diesel electric locomotive almost. Electric when you're local. Gas when you're going long distance.
idk I’m pretty happy with the parking spots my mav can fit in to + the fuel economy + the ability to see things closer to my front bumper
It's human nature, but maybe not to the extent you're talking about. How much bigger and fancier do you need before it becomes solely a want and then excessive? People recognizing that, and looking for something more moderate, would be human nature too.
My thoughts exactly. Mav is great for the price especially back when I got it but if I could get full size for 10k more I would be all over it. Just did the long 20 hour trip in my friends half ton and it got me thinking about the upgrade.
Love mine. My biggest gripe is the small bed. It bothers me more than I thought it would.
Idk not an issue for me. Old ranger I had was only 6 inches longer.
Love the Maverick but unfortunately it is incapable of doing the work I need it to
90% of Maverick owners could get by with a Prius. 90-95% of F150 owners could get by with a Maverick, or Prius. Ultimately who cares what anybody drives
Fact
I need a modern El Camino. That’s it. My old short bed c1500 shit it’s transmission out in the spring and it’s been a real pain. While a Maverick is exactly what I need, I need one that’s is beat up and costs $3500. I’ve got a perfect good 40mpg car I have no desire to get rid of.
The lack of a simple truck is why I see a ton of 25yo JDM kei and slightly bigger trucks being imported to the US.
Merica truck yeah 🛻
I’ll be obsessed with whatever I want to be obsessed with, thanks
funny how they forget to mention that the reason trucks have gotten significantly bigger over the past 30 years is because of government regulation over fuel economy. That’s why they stop selling the S-10 and the Ranger back in the day and instead of having the small size truck, they came up with the Dakotas and the Colorado’s, which were like the midsize trucks.
What an echo chamber of virtue signalling nonsense. Standing taller on your soapbox because you drive a smaller truck and hate on everyone else that owns a full-size pickup truck. Who cares? Why waste your energy. I feel embarrassed I even gave it enough thought to write this comment.
I've grown weary of the clichéd condescension towards the American truck market and its constituent consumers. Don't get me wrong--there certainly exists a significant subculture that worships the full-size pickup for reasons outside of practicality, but most people are buying them because that's what has been available.
I don’t know about that
Kinda reminds me back when automakers tried to make MPVs a thing, but in the end midsize sedans and crossovers kept going and MPVs kinda just disappeared.
Right now I think Ford kinda has that problem with the Ranger, particularly since they got rid of the Ranger with a 6ft bed. Now you have this weird middle child that’s slightly larger than the Maverick, smaller than the F-150, and I think depending on configuration the Ranger even gets worse MPG than some versions of the F-150.
It also drives me crazy when people say that a pickup truck is pointless because you never use its full capacity. Weight wise it’s probably true, but I use my pickup for large bulky things all the time like lawnmowers, stump grinders, and ATVs.
Let people drive what they want.
My 2013 Chevy Silverado is rusting, with paint falling off. It has nearly 300k miles and pulls boats and trailers. I haul a lot of stuff in the bed. Living in rural North Dakota, it gets me through winter storms and snow banks. I don’t think a midsize pickup will allow me to pull a 24’ pontoon in ND winds. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to try it. It's also perfect for hunting and fishing, allowing me to carry all of my gear. The cab provides enough room for guns up front, without bumping everything when shooting out the window.
Idk man, my goal is get whats affordable and all of these pushes for a less reliable method of transportation aren't gonna change my mind until the affordable part kicks in, and "cheaper than some ice trucks!!@!@@@!" Isn't the same as affordable.
My trips from New England to Tennessee would get incredibly difficult once I got south of DC, and while that isn't on the cars it's still not something I'm gonna risk because of a few heavily biased opinions online and a paid for article.
As a small truck owner, 4cyl Nissan frontier bare bones except a radio and a/c, that beats the living shit out of it. I would love to see the Hilux show up here. We have a big truck for hauling the camper and dogs around, but my little truck does the bulk of gardening and home improvement work.
If you’re a single person, midsize or small trucks work well. You have a family and want a truck a full size gets really attractive. Most mid-size trucks don’t have a lot of rear leg room.
I’m really cheering for the Telo Truck. I hope they can make small, affordable, trucks popular again.
My first vehicle in high school was a bare bones, stick shift, 4 cylinder, Chevy S-10. Aside from general ICE maintenance that thing ran forever and was fun as hell to drive.
The other weird trend in trucks is the whole Quad cab, crew cab, half SUV concept. Most people don’t have that many passengers, so once again, they’re marketing you into all sorts of 1% features. :(
My Tacoma is the perfect sized truck. I just wish I had the long bed.
My last truck was a 2006 Tacoma, had every previous gen tacos. I stopped because it started getting too big also
Bring back the Jeep Comanche w/ a I6 and that's all I need for daily driving/hauling stuff occasionally.
Mavs cool but useless. Need bigger truck
My favorite line: "The vast majority of full-size pickups never come close to touching the tips of their illustrious limits, their owners content to haul air on the way to work and back across some of the smoothest asphalt ever laid onto this Earth."
