So I’m surprising my wife for her 40th with a quick trip to NYC. We are both foodies but she is a vegan and I am not. Are there any nice sit down restaurants near Broadway St that we can each get a really good meal? Also, it’s on Sunday and I noticed a bunch of places are unfortunately not open. Thank you!
Does abcv have any meat dishes?
No.
The private rooms at emp do.
Musket Room. Michelin star with omnivore and vegan tasting menus. Was under 100 when I went but now 125 pp.
Right now I have Avant Garden booked for Saturday but I keep seeing Musket Room, maybe I make a switch.
Avant Garden is the 'safe' bet from that group, it's standard New American, just vegan.
- Avant Garden - New American both in food and set dressing (though they moved recently, so I'm not 100% sure about that). The food is very good, but you're not going to be surprised by anything.
- Eterea - Mexican, dark plush interior and a cocktail program focused on Tequila (my favorite).
- Soda Club - Tiny pasta and wine bar, the fact that they're doing vegan fresh pasta is really cool. I'm not a wine drinker so that's a 'meh' from me, but the pastas are pretty awesome.
- Ladybird - Bright pastels and small plates. I liked the food a lot (though it was years ago that I went), but it's a little to 'pretty people' for me (I am not a pretty person).
- Cadance - This is the one that gets talked up the most, I've not been.
- &Beer - Haven't been, very small, but a menu focused on mushrooms sounds cool, and it's connected to Proletariat, one of my favorite beer bars.
None of these are close to Broadway. The closest things I know would be Franchia Vegan Cafe and Hangawi, sister restaurants that serve vegan Korean. Franchia is a little more modern, Hangawi is styled like an old school Korean place (take your shoes off when you enter, tables are kneeling table in style, but you sit normally).
This is a huge help, thank you!
My girl is also vegan and I am not. Avant- Garden is delicious so that’s a safe bet
Closed on Sundays, unfortunately.
Broadway and what? You need to specify. Broadway runs down most of Manhattan.
Typically when someone says broadway they’re referring to the district
*all of Manhattan. Shit, it goes all the way to Albany. I think it’s the longest street in the world.
Sorry, I meant the theatre district on broadway
Thai villa
Thai Villa and Pranakhon are some of the best
Dirt candy
Superiority Burger and Dirt Candy
Broadway Street, LMAO.
I’m screaaaaming 🤣🤣
Red Bamboo is by far the best I’ve had. The shrimp tastes like the real thing and everything on the menu is delicious
Have you ever been to Avant Garden? I have this booked for Saturday and maybe we do Bamboo on Sunday
Avant Garden is that nicer sit down I think you were looking for. Sunday is more fitting for the other.
A little bit less spendy but me (non vegan), and my wife (vegan) both really enjoyed jajaja, and spicy moon.
For something a little bit more classy, we went to avant garden but honestly... Was just kinda meh. Food was fine. Service was excellent.
For non vegan restaurants with vegan options that didn't feel like an afterthought, we've really liked Fish Cheeks, Thai Diner, Kings Co Imperial, nami nori, aces pizza, johns on 12th street. Heavily Asian but if you're looking for both vegan and non vegan that just tends to be the easier route.
My girlfriend is vegan and I am not, as many listed the best options I’d recommend are Dirt Candy, Superiority Burger and Spicy Moon. But for spots around Times Sq/Broadway my bet is on EAK Ramen and Izakaya - a little casual, but great vegan and Omni options.
Have also heard good things about PS Kitchen but have not been.
Edit: also want to say if it’s not too late- swap your rest at Avant Garden for Dirt Candy if possible. For roughly the same price, my partner and I are consistently blown away by Dirty Candy whereas Avant Garden was just… fine.
There's no such thing as a vegan foodie
Rude for no reason, OP is trying to plan a nice experience to share with their wife...
That's like claiming to be a sommelier that doesn't drink alcohol ...
All food isn’t meat lmao
And not all wines contain alcohol but the best ones do.
Sure why not. I like NA wines and they’re gonna get better each year. We should have NA sommeliers too. While we are at it, I don’t prefer to consume caffeine but am allowed to like coffee still!
Sure but I would not take coffee recommendations from you
Your loss. Anyway the point isn’t to convince you to have my eating habits. The point is to offer options for people with different preferences
Blue hill near wash sq park, they will accommodate dietary restrictions
Willow. It’s not that close to Broadway tho
Dirt candy!
Gramercy Tavern
Agree that Eterea is the best one of Ravi DeRossi’s group of restaurants! I liked it even better than Cadence although I liked that and Soda Club, too. Avant Garden is ok, and I really disliked Ladybird.
I am also not a fan of Franchia. I’d been there multiple times and everything tastes like honestly, take-out American Chinese food.
Also enjoyed Anixi (vegan Mediterranean), Willow, and Planta. And I’m NOT vegan/vegetarian. :)
Second on Planta. It’s vegan Asian fusion and so so so good
