This is the first car that I've consistently ran to near empty with the gas light on. Apparently, it's very conservative from the factory, and when it's near zero, you still have ~25 miles left. Once, I ran it to 0 DTE and only filled up like 12 gals out of the 13.4.
My M2 behaves the same way, light comes on at 1/4 tank lol.
It's 12.5 gallon tank, not 13.4.
Also, the manual says that you have like 10-15 miles left after 0, so half a gallon is accurate.

You can actually change the AFE Bias in diagnostic mode to match your exact mpg. I consistently get only 400km on full tank in mixed driving and based on the refill after empty, it is pretty damn accurate after configuring the AFE Bias.
You should track it! The fuel light come on at half tank 😅

0 is never 0. You have 5-15miles usually left.
The gas light comes out between 40-50 miles depending your driving.
Typically cars were programmed to turn the light on at the 2 gallon mark. I know the RS is different.
It could be 2 gallon. I know mine was a bit more, closer to 3 gallons. I got 18.xx combine and mine always popped on at 50 miles left. 18x3 is 54... So 2-3 gallons is probably the spot.

It is VERY difficult to explain how much of a gas guzzler it is…it looks like a (European) Focus, drives like a hot rod! No one believes me until they ride with me.
If only there was some type of measurement that shows the distance travelled per amount of gas

I always tank 1/2 with the super rare exception at 1/4. My RS does not like to suck in junk so I don’t go near empty. Most I did was 550 km with one tank and that was on a flat highway at 90 km/h with cruise control. The most tedious drive I ever had.
I have mine under 15 a few times now
If you’re worried about gas buy a fiesta st. Way more for the money.
“21.4mpg” 75% freeway/25% city, usually average 260ish mi/tank. $60 every 2 days, it’s terrible. I need to move back to the south 😬
I didn't buy my RS for fuel economy but on a road trip once I did manage to pull off over 30mpg driving 65mph, a full tank lasted me about 355mi or so, that what my trip computer read out. Wouldn't recommend! 🫠
Must’ve been running that %100 fuel. Great gas mileage but bad for gdi motor like ours
