I think you guys just have lower standards for EM, for anyone else I'd be like yeah that's fine, but it really is a BAD album for the standard I expect from him. From mixing to beat selection , to delivery, to flows to most of the chorus it was all so below the standard I expected

A few gold tracks here and there is not enough to save it, and I loved Castle Arose and walk on water

Revival isn’t as dog shit as people say it is. But it’s… probably his worst. I haven’t listened to it in a while but I remember only liking 4 songs and 1 of those 4 I’m indifferent about. I think I most people have came around and realised that it’s ok but it’s still gonna be the punching bag.

I could tell his heart was in it from bars like

"Your booty is heavy duty, like diarrhea"

Or

"I just shit on my last chick and she has what my ex lacks"

MMLP 2 had this emotional substance already. It felt like a good bye.

Disagree. It feels creatively bankrupt. He has no inspiration on it and doesn’t know what to do so he tries to do a bit of everything, but it doesn’t feel like he wanted to make any of these songs, they’re just filling their roles on the big Eminem album. Like a lot of songs have ok concepts but the execution is dreadfully boring and basic and often cringey.

I think the two songs that represent what makes it such an atrocious album are Like Home and Bad Husband. Like Home has no edge or bite to it, the lyrics tread well worn territory with no edge or interesting point of view, alongside some truly cringeworthy lines (this pickle we’re ins hard to dill). Compare Like Home with Mosh. It’s night and day.

Bad Husband feels like he saw how well received headlights was and thought hey why not do that again, but unlike headlights it doesn’t feel authentic and he comes across as an asshole who can’t take full responsibility, we don’t need to hear about how you’re a great dad! Cool Em!

In addition to those two songs, nearly every song has some glaring flaw that makes it almost unlistenable, whether it’s vocal delivery, lyrics (it’s lyrics on almost all of them), flow, beat selection, sometimes all four! I really enjoy Offendeds verses but HOW is that the chorus. Believe has a good concept/message but HOW is that the flow.

I guess I should give the obligatory Framed/Castle/Arose praise cause those are three great songs, but it’s literally three. And sixteen bad ones.

It put on full display how out of touch he was with current music at the time, and a shocking lack of taste and quality control. This sub sometimes tries to justify it but there’s truly nothing to justify, it just might be the most embarrassing major release of the 21st century.

Believe, Castle, In Your Head, Walk on Water, Framed, Offended and Tragic Endings (no one would would shit on this song half as much if it were on Recovery) all have different sounds from different eras and objectively aren't straight up bad songs.

But when you put them all together, mixed in with the actual bad songs (Need Me is brutal), it makes for a not so great album

There's enough there for most of the fanbase to like at least a handful of songs though

That's a retarded take, em was clearly trying to restylize after he realized he'd used up the recovery style in the mmlp2 and he was trying something else, he wouldn't find something that worked until mtbmb (though he was mad enough in kamikaze that it ended up good by sheer force of will imo) his recent songs and features have been amazing and i expect this upcoming album to be the best this particular version of eminem drops

The thing is the content is very solid love what he was rapping about didn’t love how it was produced and delivered tho that’s what makes it unlistenable to me

My younger son adored Revival and it was his favorite and he wanted to listen to it all the time. He was 12 and severely autistic, but that's not a diss. It's the truth. 😆 I ended up annoyed because I couldn't listen to Kamikaze in the car when he was home because he always wanted Revival.😆

It has its moment - Walk on Water, Castle and Arose are all great songs with a personal punch.

Though other than that the album is unfocused, all over the place and poorly mixed. Also the politics on the album just turns me off - it isn’t about what he’s saying, but rather, how he’s saying it. Em has both said nothing profound or now nor has he presented his takes in a clever artistic way (imo if you’re gonna rap about politics or even personal issues - it has to be one of the two - though that’s why Walk on Water, Castle and Arose are all great) - most of the political stuff are frankly lukewarm takes rapped very angerly.

And thing is, he’s done the lukewarm take in an artistic way before - his take on gun control in Darkness is very mainstream liberal, but the execution of the song is one of the most artistic takes of the issue i’ve seen therefore making it an excellent track.

So yeah, unfocused, unartistic and very poorly mixed. It’s a bad album.

I'm still convinced if someone remixed and mastered the album it would be great, the whole reason it sucks is because Rick Rubin went insane and uses tube headphones and can't accurately listen to anything anymore so it was produced terribly missing huge gaps of frequencies

I've been a Stan for most of my life and I love 90% of Ems music, but I have to say that in the case of Revival, it was by far, the worst album he has ever released and you can't deny that.

He's a rapper and I felt he took the Kid Rock approach and made RapRock instead of his own usual style.

Revival made me lose hope for his career for a while. I swear anything that came after this if it was as bad I was going to fully boycott him.

Echoing what others have said, if you judge it to his discography, it’s awful. He sort of experimented with rock on TES and Recovery and obviously it was better on TES than recovery, but the recovery rock-pop elements were so much better than revival.

Revival was also so out of character, the pandering. I get he hated trump, I get he wanted to stand up for African Americans, especially the climate at that time. But untouchable and like home are so cringe worthy and so bad.

I love Em. He’s what got me (like most of you, a nerdy little white kid in the 2000s) into rap. He opened my mind to other artist and now rap and hip-hop are my go to genres most of the time. Revival is without a doubt my least favorite album by him. It’s not great. Maybe 3 or 4 songs I actually have in rotation on Spotify. But when it comes to his other albums, I struggle with which is top tier for me. Depending on what time of my life I’m thinking about or reflecting on, each album has a chance to be my favorite. Except for revival. It probably does suck for him to have tried something new and it didn’t work out. Ems a grown man who’s been through a shit ton worse than us not liking an album. For example, fans and critics didn’t vibe with it, so what did he do? Put out bangers with Kamikaze and Musicto be murdered by. I’m hyped to see how he does in The Death of Slim Shady. I know this is a lot, but it’s just really to say stop putting him on a pedestal, cause he’s human. He put out something fans didn’t care for, he knows it. Move on. He did.

Lyrically its good. But the beats are 90% ass.

I liked the idea of this album, but the execution was so much "off", that I can't stand listening to it.

It has some good songs. It's mostly enjoyable with some bad tracks. It tried to please everybody with something for every type of fan instead of a theme.

It's a shame about three songs are sonically terrible.

You say that he’s not 25 or on drugs but that wasn’t the issue. I thought kamikaze and mtbmb were great. Like others have said, the flows, beats and overall production were pretty mid at best.

To me the standouts are castle, arose and walk on water

Personally I enjoy Revival minus a few songs. That album is the first one I listened to of Eminem’s, so I have that biasness. Is it HIS best? I don’t think so - personally I feel like his albums get better and better as time goes on. People were saying MTBMB only had recency biasness going for it, but that’s aged to be a solid album. Even Encore was shit on in its earlier days. (I don’t have room to talk about that, because I was barely a year old when he dropped Encore lol)

Untouchable is Eminem’s worst song. Worse than FACK. Worse than Big Weenie. Worse than anything else. The album feels more like a Taylor Swift rap endeavour than an outing from a legend.

There are songs on that album which I absolutely love but there are also some that I just can't stand, personally.

Going off of your statement, Eminem just doesn’t seem capable of making a consistent album full of songs with the message of Revival. That excuse of he’s not young he can’t be the young him again is just drained. Jay Z literally dropped 4:44 that same year and fans argue that it’s a top 5 album from him.

And you can tell when Eminem has passion and passion was not in that album. Passion was in Kamikaze when he got mad that people didn’t like Revival. Even the Chloraseptic remix had more passion and was better than 80% of the songs on revival. I just don’t believe Eminem poured his heart into this record when it’s clear he sounds hungrier when defending himself rather than rapping about serious issues. It never came off as genuine through revival and once again his best songs were about himself and not about America, Trump, etc. Walk on Water, Believe, Castle, Arose. Easily the best songs on the album.

Revival could've been a great album.

I love the subject matters he chose to rap about on songs like Walk On Water, Believe, Untouchable, Like Home, Bad Husband, Nowhere Fast, In Your Head, Castle and Arose. He is vulnerable and passionate on those songs.

He is having fun on the rest of the tracks and flexing his skills on the rest of the tracks. It should've been a great album. But then you listen to the album from front to back and each and every track on the album (except for Castle and Arose) is filled with bad production, bad flows, bad hooks, bad mixing.

I want to say that the last three tracks are great (this is the popular opinion) but even then the weird flows on In Your Head Verse 2 immediately ruins that song. Castle and Arose are the only great tracks from Revival.

I don't want the old Em or him to rap on certain types of production. I just want him to make an album consistently good from front to back.

Not even one album he dropped since TES is consistently great from the first track to the last track. A dud here or there is expected on his albums after TES but Revival doesn't have a dud here and there, every song on Revival has something that makes me turn it off (except for Castle and Arose).

It was his worst album but it's not a terrible album I just expect more than 50/50 from em.

In addition to everything everyone else has already said,the part where you mention that "it must have crushed him seeing all the negative reviews and comments" isn't really an excuse. Yeah it's not good but you can't expect to do something and not get criticism from at least someone. Not everyone gonna like what you do. Same goes here too,but to a greater extent. Plus,he was 20 years in the game at the time of the release of the album and he had gotten plenty of criticism before,so if he's not able to handle this them that's his fault. We're not supposed to say "oh what an amazing album" to everything just so the artists feel good. Criticism is good cause it lets the artist know where he made mistakes so he can fix them.

I actually like revival and I have a few songs saved on my spotify.

I think there are some really good songs mixed with some of the worst songs of his career. Believe, Remind Me, Fire, Castle and Arose are all bangers in my opinion.

I really enjoy the technicality of the lyrics on this whole thing.

It has a lot of bad songs but there's a minority of good songs that i can't live without. It's a 5.5 out of 10 for me. Not good for Eminem's standarts. But not the worst album ever.

If I were to rate all of good studio albums, it's last. But, I can still listen to pretty much all the songs without issue.

Believe goes hard as f. Chloroseptic (both versions) are great as well.

Walk on water, Offended, Framed, Castle and Arose and Bad Hisband are all full of great word play and lyrics.

River is a good storytelling song with a catchy ass hook from Ed.

Honestly, I think it just has so many haters because the content he included got so political at times. No quicker way to divide a fanbase than by taking a strong stance (left or right).

I can definately understand people being critical of the overall production though as I feel like the tracks don't always blend very well. It felt like it kind of went from rock/rap to lyrical rap to emotional or funny without really thinking about how it would impact the vibe of people who maybe don't like to track jump.

Can't understand people who say it's got only a couple of good songs though. There's plenty of quality in the tracklist.

I loved Nowhere Fast. At least the instrumental part of it.

I like Castle.. Arose is alright. But the rest of it really is not good.

I’ve honestly thought he was on a decline from Encore straight to Revival. Revival being the bottom. As a long-term fan I had given up at that point. And then Kamikaze hit and I was like, he’s back. If you liked Revival you’re just not a fan of Em or hip hop in general.

I have yet to listen to most of his albums (I have listened to the persona trilogy in full though, masterpieces), but what I've heard from Revival is amazing. Bad Husband, Untouchable, River, and of course Walk on Water, one of the few songs that gives me chills every time. It's also remarkably different from every other rap song by being a spoken word poem set to music, rather than a traditional rap.

I like Revival more than any of his albums since. I think MTBMB is largely boring. Only songs I really can’t stand in Revival are songs like Untouchable, Remind Me, and Heat. The only songs I’ve gone back to consistently after Revival is Darkness and Stepping Stone

I find Revival really nostalgic because it was the first Em album I actually got to listen to on release day, and I listened to it a ton that year. I like the theming of the album and honestly my main flaws with it are the mixing and some of the bars. I like the pop features for the most part, I just feel like it could've been mixed and written better. It's still his worst album regardless of the fact that I enjoy it

There a few songs that I was like idk what to say. "Tragic Endings", "Remind Me" and "Heat" were like "idk, man tbh" for me. NGL that some song productions were awful like "Believe". IDK why, but that piano with that beat doesn't fit together.

My favorite tracks are "Arose" & "Castle". "River's" not bad. "Walk on Water" is also not that bad.

I also appreciate the messages in some of these songs about controversial Trump's statements, terrorist attacks, discrimination, police brutality, etc.

Overall, i don't hate it, but i understand why it's hated by many fans. (Probably hot take💀➡️) I feel like Revival's not that bad as Encore.

I think that many people hated It just because It was different from his first albums, it's basically the same thing that happened with "One More Light" by Linkin Park (Both happened in 2017)

It's just a disjointed album compared to his top albums that are a cohesive group of songs that fit together.

Revival felt like 10 darts in all different directions and from a time he was struggling with flow.

Revival is terrible. The end. You seem to have this idea that we want him to rap like its the 2000s when he was on drugs. We dont. There’s a ton of stuff from Eminem’s sober era that’s great music. Revival just isnt it. The production is terrible. The lyrics dont hit hard and are nonsensical at times. You can tell he just isnt passionate about the issues he’s rapping about, unlike Kamikaze and MTBMB.

Just because you have lower standards and will listen to any slop the man puts out in the name of an album doesnt mean everyone will. Its important to push any artist you like to do better. And that includes recognizing that not everything they do is good.
