Happened during Canada Day in Rundle Park
Canada Day parking is always a shit show.
Its almost certainly a bylaw infraction, if that is a city lot. But thats the worst it is.
Parking lots are special places where a lot of traffic laws don't really apply.
Edit: I have been corrected that the traffic safety act applies on all private property that is open to public use. The behaviour here contravenes Rules of the Road 44(d).
Yup. Private lots are pretty much exceptions unless the property manager doesn’t like it.
Actually, the same laws apply to parking lots as with streets, in Alberta.
If the parking lot is ordinarily accessible by the public, I believe that is true for moving violations, and liability. As far as where you can park your car, that's a matter between you and the lot owner, and the conditions the owner places on use before it's considered trespass.
Wouldn't the act of driving up over the curb count as a moving violation?
INAL, but I couldn't find anything to suggest that mounting a curb is unto itself illegal. I could find plenty of contexts in which it was illegal, but the issue was always something else that mounting the curb caused secondarily (like blocking a sidewalk), rather than the act itself. It would be a little surprising to me if it were, as I can think of a few legitimate reasons where you would need access over a curb, like service or maintenance vehicle accessing the outside of a building. But if someone has clarification, that would be helpful.
On a city street parking on a curb would be against bylaw 5590 section 4 where "a vehicle shall not be parked on a sidewalk or blvd or any part of sidewalk or blvd."
It's kind of a if you gonna but a bunch of weight on the curb you gonna get fined for infrastructure damage.
not if you got a city truck, we park those bitches right on some fresh sod or on the curb, just turn your lights on
I was parking enforcement a couple years back. City vehicles were pretty exempt to all things same thing with the Queens mail. Unless they in a disabled spot, the only non-exempt place.
Yes and no.
On the road if you park in front of a fire hydrant you'll get a ticket. If you park in a spot in a lot beside a fire hydrant you won't. If you park in an area that is designated for emergency cases be it fire lanes or disabled spots you can be ticketed following bylaw 5590.
In this case it's technically not illegal but if management could call in parking enforcement and (If proper signs are up, and management signs off on it) it will be fined and towed. If management has an agreement with like Cliffs it could get towed and you'd have to jump through Cliff's hoops.
Verify pls
Parking lots are special places where a lot of traffic laws don't really apply.
This is incorrect. Any private lot that is accessible to a public roadway follows the same rules as a public roadway. That's why they're able to give out distracted driving tickets in drive-thrus.
Ah but if the building owner doesn’t care you can park in a drive thru. You sometimes see this on unused drive thru. You cannot park in the road lol
I was talking about the rules of the road, not parking in particular.
So in other words you're saying that if a lot owner says it's okay to park on the curb it's okay?
I think so
The precedents and laws of liability still apply though!if I was the property owner I would get him towed and banned and then sent him a bill for “concrete cleaning/repair”.
Nothing here would stand up in court. To tow from a private lot you need to show a rule has been violated, even. And there is zero damage to anyone involved here as far as I can see.
I'm not trying to endorse what this asshole is doing. I really don't know where we need to put some energy in to establishing community standards and engaging with our citizens to give a shit about their conduct. Some people just think they are the center of their own universe.
Just because there’s no sign saying “please don’t drive or park on the sidewalk like a fuckin moron” doesn’t mean that it isn’t against any rule the property owner has in place. Also, fun fact: you can have anyone towed for any reason you like if they are parked on your property. Businesses, municipalities and apartment complexes pay towing companies to do exactly that. Sure you can skip work and go through the whole small claims court process to try and get your money back but, and I know this is unbelievable to people who don’t regularly see court cases, precedent set by previous cases basically dictates who wins and in this regard the driver doesn’t have a leg to stand on.
Zero F-ks given. Kinda like how a lot of Edmonton drivers are these days.
I almost got killed on manning yesterday because of a very reckless, dangerous driver. I hate this city sometimes.
these days? you clearly arent a cyclist that watches at least 10 people run red lights and stop signs daily
Oh dude, I see it all while driving, walking and riding my bike. It’s terrible. This morning by the SB at The Matrix hotel I witnessed a near miss of an SUV and a cyclist.
I'm finding a lot more people hogging the left lane on the Henday and Highway 16 going far under the speed limit. Like, flow of traffic is 110-120 and they're doing 80.
In fact, I had to slam on my brakes and got stuck behind one between the QEII and Gateway Blvd exits on the Henday just this afternoon.
About 5 years ago I was parking to go grocery shopping, I use a handicap parking stall (yes, I have a placard). The handicap stall in front of the stall I parked in had a mini van in it. No placard, just 2 sheets of paper with a hand written note (New Drive). Anyways I go inside the store, do my grocery shopping and leave. I put my bagged groceries in my vehicle and I see the driver of the van (with no placard). I approached and said, hey, just so you know you are parked in a handicap stall, you should have a placard to park there. In broken English, the lady said, no! Her driving instructor told her if she had a piece of paper or sign that said "new driver", she can park where ever she likes. I said, Oh interesting! You should check into that and that she was given wrong information. She said no, she will continue to follow what the driving instructor told her.
The "driving instructors" should not be giving wrong information. I've witnessed many situations like this in Edmonton. People stopping or parking where ever they want and doing what they want. People simply do not care! If you say something, (in most cases you get called a "racist" or get yelled at and sworn at). Bylaw and the Police need to be more strict with situations like this (it's happening more and more) and it's going to get out of control.
I particularly love it when a driving school car, with only one person inside (in other words, an instructor), cuts you off without signaling and then runs a light. Usually, the sign on top is for some small driving school you've never heard of.
Next time would just report the person to the authorities and let them ticket her, and then let them explain to her that her "driving instructor" was very wrong.
That's probably the best course of action.
I’m a handicap placard and licence plate user, I report often these last few years as misuse of disability stalls has gotten much worse in the last two decades. I report when it’s a place that frequent often. My reports come with photos of the illegally parked vehicles’ licence plates, the stall where the paint would be, and the area in front of the stall where a sign would be and it always fall on deaf ears when using proper reporting channels. When I go physically into the councillor’s office, I just get platitudes and zero resolutions. When I do the same with other jurisdictions it’s the same treatment. Our society our can muster platitudes for the disabled… that’s all we deserve in there eyes and maybe a charity 5k walk, run, and roll.
Skip drivers are the worst for this. Anytime I see a car with no placard parked in the handicap spot, I go in and very loudly ask the skip driver if it is their car and pester them until they go out and move the car. The excuse is always, I'm only going to be a few minutes. Meanwhile someone who is legit allowed to park there has to park 200ft away. Don't get me wrong, I would love to park in one of these spots sometimes instead of at the back of the parking lot, but I can walk without issues so pack a lunch and walk is what I do.
Last week I saw a Skip driver losing his mind because someone with a placard was pissed off enough to just park behind them, blocking them in until the placard user was done their business. A few people around him were recording him and telling him not to do anything stupid.
He was stil there when I left a few minutes later.
Made my day.
Go to the McDonald's on 104 Ave and 117 St. There are 3 or 4 handicap stalls at the side of the restaurant and 2 or 3 delivery driver stalls. The Skip drivers are very lazy and always park in the handicap stalls. When you confront them, they always get very upset and start swearing and want to start a fight. I've seen the delivery stalls empty and 3 Skip drivers parked in a handicap stall or some just park on the road (not in an actual stall) and walk in and wait to get the delivery orders. The Skip and Uber Eats drivers are the worst! Also the Pizza Hut on 104 Ave. 116 Street has a handicap stall right beside the entrance/exit. I parked there once went inside and ordered a pizza. As I was waiting I noticed there was a car driving around outside. He ended up parking further down in the strip mall parking lot. He walked into Pizza Hut and went in the back. When I got my pizza I said thank you and walked out to my car. The guy followed me out and proceeded to yell at me saying I took his reserved delivery stall. I said, no sorry this is a handicap stall you need a placard to park here and it is not your reserved delivery stall.
Only in winter when you can't tell...
Lol wtf
It's legal till you get towed.
Many Edmonton drivers seem to think "Create Your Own Pizza" also applies to parking spots.
Don’t you have the park anywhere button in your car? It’s the red triangle with a smaller red triangle inside.
Everything is legal to a Dodge Journey driver.
Rundle park was ridiculous that day… I’m shocked that no one showed up and started giving out fines for all that illegal parking. Yet there was someone in my neighbourhood giving out parking tickets on the same day.
The city is terrified of doing anything to upset the people who choose to live in the city but hate the city and its rules.
I was at Laurier on the weekend and the road heading down to the boat launch was lined with parked cars. No tickets on any windshields and actually saw someone get blocked into their spot by a parked boat trailer behind them. Took about a 20 point turn to get out while everyone backed up the lane.
Really got tempted to let the air out of some tires that day, but there's no point, I'd still be angry and they'd still be acting entitled.
Not to mention that letting the air out of the tires on a car you ultimately want to move somewhere else seems unproductive.
but if you do two or more tires they have to call their own tow truck.
Yeah it was a very brief intrusive thought.
The number of utterly shit drivers in Edmonton has become out of control.
Pretty normal for canada day. Mill Woods was hilarious then too, with cars parked on the median and other green space, sandwiched on random front yards and everywhere else they could fit. People just don't care, and there are too many infractions for the city to bother.
You would think the city would see this as a opportunity to get $$
Trying to get your dodge journey over a curb like that is certainly a choice
It's a Dodge Journey. They're suffering enough as is with that POS.
Nope. Rules for thee but not for me mentality.
Some people are lazy as shit
What’s the stick that guy is having about? Probably not official traffic flagging gear!
This is why I bought a Jeep. Fuck parking spaces. I'll park wherever. Kidding I bought it cause it's purple.
What a dick
Not even fucking close. 🤦♀️ They should have been towed.
I like how the mods immediately say ‘no racist comments’ because you just know that was immigrants. Is that racist?
Probably not.
The problem is very few people responsible for enforcing rules in areas like this actually do their jobs. It happens all the time and the more it goes unpunished the more people act like assholes. So I really wish more was done about stuff like this, even if they are only minor infractions. This just makes people feel entitled to do more any more shitty stuff and society gets worse for everyone
Have seen someone get in trouble with parking on the concrete pads like that before. Had seen an officer waiting in a patrol car waiting for the owner of the driver to come out to their car while it was parked on the cement pad in the Cineplex South Edmonton Common parking lot a while ago when it was busy. I guess they figured that they would be able to do that with no issues.
considering the most damage done is to their own vehicle, it's probably "illegal" but does anyone really care that much?
I think you know the answer.
Guys in their giant pick-up trucks do it all the time.
It is in Brampton
If you have enough money, anything is legal 🤷♂️
There are no surprises in this video.
It is a bylaw infraction. I know this because I got this exact ticket a few years ago parking on the grass at the Castle Downs park.
Just report it to bylaw and let them figure it it out if it's okay or not.
I don't think that's legal anywhere
"I will MAKE it legal!"
Parking on the boulevard, $250 fine. Guy I worked with got a ticket last year for it.
only if you drive in edmonton, im sure no driver actually cares whats legal
Probably more legal than being on your phone while driving
In a Dodge Journey, it is
What an asshole. Not surprised though, it's depressing how many people don't give a shit
Just a sense of entitlement. Cops would have to see it, and care in order to rectify the situation. Some people just do what they want
If it fits it sits!
Depends, did they actually park thereunder leave the vehicle? Or were they just trying to clear the way for traffic to avoid an even more complicated situation? Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Gee, can't wait to read the comment section on Instagram, I'm sure it will be a civilized discussion
Well they seem to think it’s legal 😳.
Everything is legal, if you get away with it.
Yes it’s legal. I park my car in children’s playground. I don’t see the problem
Asking if this is legal is irrelevant to these sorts. Rule of law, citizenship, civil society… all these concepts are just “whining” in the eyes of freedomites. Apparently somebody told them that “acting like an ahole” = “exercising of personal liberties”, and the dumb snowball grows larger every day.
Who cares nerd truck drivers do this kind of shit all the time and no one gives a fuck
Brown
Do it all the time on my crotch rocket, but it's out of the way and people with strollers and wheelchairs can get by. This dudes just an asshole but was probably frustrated with parking on canada day
This is a common sight in Surrey, BC lol
Nobody is commenting on the guy holding the golf club. He seems to have hit or tried to scratch the vehicle. I can't see any reason for him to be out there with a golf club except to threaten or intimidate the driver.
Yes. That’s the bigger crime.
Clearly a case of, "If I fits, I sits"
Something racist!
Yes it is as long as long as you just bought your licence that day

Brampton tourist.
LoL, is this the only vehicle you saw illegally parked on Canada day? Is this your first time being out on Canada day? It's pretty common for people to try to squeeze their vehicles into any available space.
Whether they get a ticket or towed is luck of the draw as city staff are pretty busy on the day, and prioritizing safety concerns and the blocking of handicap parking.
It’s actually my first canada day, I just arrived here last year aug.
What you witnessed is not normal or appropriate behavior.
its just sad, outsiders should respect the city like they're visiting other peoples home.
You missed an opportunity to yell “Hey! Hey sir! You can’t park there!” Haha, I mean if you get ignored then you did your due diligence as a citizen, can’t make everyone act right and park in a parking spot and not a curb hahahaha sorry this is just tickling me. It’s so obviously not a parking spot and they know that 😭
I'm afraid I will get attacked, I have kid with me haha
That is a spot reserved for entitled people. Hope they got towed.
Ya probably. but you have spent prolly 20x the time thinking and dwelling on this than this boi spent getting on with what he was doing and where he was going. It’s funny and silly, who gives a shit Karen?
Since when are Edmonton drivers concerned with legalities?
Caption says Rundle park on Canada Day.
Indeed, thank you. I need to read better :). Appreciate you not being mean about it.
If it's on private property, that is property not owned by the city or province, the rules of the road don't apply. It would be up to the property owner to go after them like the way Impark does it. Many parking lot managers post signs all over their lots describing what behavior is allowed and what isn't and the consequences of infraction. I've seen it at South Edmonton Common, especially by the theater where there are security personnel issuing "tickets " to people parking like that.
There's not much the property managers can do if the ticket isn't paid except tow the vehicle if there are subsequent infractions.
Mainstreet by the Greynuns was having lots of issues with people parking there to go to the hospital. Now they have people monitoring the parking lot for walk-offs.
To me it's pretty anti-customer but hey, it's business.
Who owns rundle park?
City of Edmonton
Okay. So you posted all about private property that isn’t relevant to OP for what reason?
Private lot doesn't matter in Alberta, same traffic laws as streets.
In Alberta, the Traffic Safety Act applies anywhere a car can be driven that's accessible to the public, even if it's privately owned," says Trent Bancarz, spokesman for Alberta Transportation. "So, yes, stop signs and speed limits on parking lots have the force the law."
This is from a Globe and Mail article in 2012 and I doubt anything has changed since then.
No, take a pic of it and send to 311 App
Obviously not
No just stupid….
I mean Canada Day/ Independence Day whatever, are usually one of them days you’ll most likely see this and usually not see tickets handed out….sometimes there is absolutely no place to park.
Is this not a perfectly reasonable place to park?
Legal? Sure. Brilliant or recommended? Not generally.
No it’s not legal, but is anyone going to stop you ? No probably not.
Lol that's creative. But no.
The good ol Dodge Journey...
Ignorant yes, cuntish yes.
Dodge journey will go over everything. Trust me bro, I got one
Well if it fits it sits?
It's only illegal if you get caught, lol
I just happen to like purple, it's the colour that stands out best. Probably because you just don't see it often, maybe?
Lol... this is just standard procedure at my local costco parking lot.
If I fits, I sits
I saw someone pull their vehicle right up to a barricade, open their back vehicle door and had made the kids a bed to chill in. As a driver, it annoyed me. As a parent, I was torn between ‘that is genius’ and ‘so this is how entitlement is nurtured and harvested’
Only if the "Park Anywhere" lights are on.
Imagine someone parking in the grass beside the trees lol
I will make it legal! (Darth Sidious quote)
The best part comes later when he loads up the family and drives off the curb.
Who cares, he has a spotter. Parking is a shitshow, at least he got out of the way.
Lmao hilarious not even close
If you have to ask, you shouldn't be driving lol. No you can't park on a sidewalk.
If it doesn't concern you why do u care
I would say This falls under Air Bud rules
Red dodge’s part where they want don’t you know this ?
If you don’t post something racist you’ll lose your country and civilization
Everything is legal if you have enough melanin in your skin...
Dodge Journey drivers.
Realistically, anywhere is a parking spot
If I fits I sits
Only legal with a pickup or a Harley.
Shrug. It doesn't say no parking lol
Who cares. I’d park there.
It’s not if you don’t get caught.
It's alberta who cares
I think not… but people will do anything nowadays
It is illegal, but it's not nearly ridiculous as taking the time to record a video of it and posting on the Internet.
Not a single canadian in the video.
Why don't you say anything and instead of recording it.
Some delivery driver came into my neighborhood and sorry pissing on the side of someone's house and I came up there and I said yo you better stop that right now and we're going to have a problem and I said don't come back here again and do that or else you and me will have a problem.
The reason why Canada is such a mass is that no one has the balls to actually talk to someone everyone just recorded things from 10,000 miles away what the hell is that going to do tell them you shouldn't be doing that and you're not going to be doing that here cuz we don't accept that.
That's one thing that I was Canadians did that Americans do an American will tell you what it is in a Canadian will record and then smile in your face and Shake Your Hand later.
Then we wonder why our country is dying and will be dead even when Pierre wins
No, it's driving on the sidewalk. Of course, likelihood of consequences is very low, and likelihood of anything more than a fine is zero.
And I thought parking in Vancouver was bad 🤣
I used to work at crossiron in Calgary. This is a common site during boxing day
If you post something racist you will get banned.
