Cyberpunk was an absolute masterpiece and it has been on of the only anime’s I’ve finished, I watched it with a friend and now I’m rewatching in dub with my crush but we haven’t finished it yet, the only other anime’s I’ve watched are jjk s1, s2 and the movie and demon slayer s1, s2, s3 and the movie (I’m going to watch s4 soon) and I think cyberpunk absolutely crushes those in how good it is, it was so emotionally crushing it was crazy. So my question is.. is it a top 5 anime oat? Or am I just inexperienced?
Of all time
me wondering what vegan wrote this post and what oats have to do with anime
Possibly the best the year it came out, but honestly it's a little too recent to even be considered in the best of all time. Greatest of all time across an entire medium is tough, but until its had a few years for us to gauge its impact/influence I don't think it can really fit into the conversation at all.
If you want to watch some other cyberpunk/science fiction anime that get into interesting themes here's a few you can look at
Ghost in the Shell: similar type of world, but the franchise is pretty huge and the original movie and Stand Alone Complex shows both get into very interesting philosophical ideas.
Cowboy Bebop: very western and not really cyberpunk (although a few episodes do touch the genre), but if you want to feel the type of things Edgerunners made you feel this one is about 2.5 times as long and the world is a whole lot bigger. It does start a bit slow but it's very worth it.
Psycho Pass: super different tonally, but the first season is a great cyberpunk mystery
Akira: I list this one because it's gorgeous even today and because it's iconic, but it's very long and honestly, kind of boring IMO. It's still worth watching at least once if only for the opening motorcycle fight and the final battle, but I'd recommend watching the sub because this was before anybody gave a shit about doing a good job with dubbing anime in the west.
Goated recommendations. (I also agree with Akira being kind of boring)
Would also like to throw Ergo Proxy into the ring. Then again that show is very specific and not really something you can recommend to the general audience.
Having never watched anime other than cyberpunk and other more American, not very anime like anime; I really enjoyed Ergo Proxy. I thought it was utterly insane, but still very good.
Seconding ghost in the shell
Great reply. All great recommendations. If op enjoys the scify elements of cyberpunk then they are in for quite a treat as the industry is bursting with great media in the genre. I'd like to add Pluto to your list as I'm not seeing it coming up in comments. It's more scify film noir then straight up cyberpunk, less dystopia there but not far off. Incredible series with multiple story arcs. 8 1 hour episodes are deeply refreshing. It's something to get lost on. Animation is beautiful to top it off.
I haven't watched Pluto yet, but anything that brings Astro Boy back into relevance is a good thing by me.
Ninja Scroll and the Kenshin OVA are older but great as well. AOT is the GOAT imo.
If you want something fairly similar to edgerunners thats a bit newer, I'd recommend Akudama drive. In my mind it isn't anywhere near edgerunners as far as story, but the vibe is very similar and I think it came out like 2020.
It's great, but I personally wouldn't put it in the top 5 of all time
There's a lot of anime out there
No, you're just extremely inexperienced. There are hundreds or thousands of anime that have been made, and the only things you've watched are recent shonen shows. That's like watching a handful of MCU movies as your only film I experience and asking if Iron Man 3 is the greatest movie of all time.
ok thanks for the advice, do you know any anime’s that I should watch next?
I could give you lots of recommendations, but it would help if you could specify a general direction or genre.
- If you want to be hit in the feels try:
A silent voice (movie)
Your name (movie)
Violet Evergarden (series)
Frieren (series)
- If you want action try:
Attack on Titan (series)
Black Lagoon (series)
One Punch man (series)
- If you want a thriller with great story try:
Death Note (series)
Psycho Pass (series)
Steins Gate (series)
- If you want more Cyberpunk try:
Ghost in the shell (movie)
Psycho Pass (series)
- If you want mystery try:
Summertime Rendering (series)
Heavenly Delusion (series)
Can't really make recommendations since you've got so little under your belt and not knowing what all else you have experience with and enjoy in other mediums. Do you like action, horror, drama, sci-fi, fantasy? Etc.
Broadly: look at critical consensus and top 10, 20, 50, 100 lists and see what sounds interesting. There are shows, movies, OVAs, etc. that are all worth watching.
One I personally think anyone who wants to be an anime fan should watch at least once in their life is Neon Genesis Evangelion. A LOT of things take from this series and it's one of the better 'wtf' animes without throwing as much as some others in that category will throw at you at once. Also a great way to learn why the dad is considered one of the top assholes of all time, up there with a certain Fullmetal Alchemist father anyone who's seen all of that series can attest is a complete piece of crap.
Bro I fucking love edge runners but it's personally not even my top 3 cyberpunk anime. But only because Pluto narrowly edges it out with the mind fuck elements. But Akira, ghost in the shell SAC, Pluto, edgerunners and psycho pass S1 are my easy top 5.
I recommend Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex and also Akudama Drive if you want more cyberpunk stuff.
Disagree. I’ve watched a lot of anime and it’s a top 5 all time for me. It’s all subjective.
It’s up there with Parasyte, Fate/Stay night, and HxH for me
Among the short ones, is definitely my favourite. Also, i don't relly think there's an anime that deserves to be called the best of all time, that's such a pretentious title for any anime to fill.
I know the others you mentioned and i do agree CP was better ......in our opinion.
When will these guys learn that you shouldn’t be publicly ranking CP on Reddit? The FBI can and will subpoena for your IP address.
Smy my head.
To each their own but to me this is GOAT top 3 and I’ve watched most of the anime’s people have listed here.
Sometimes things you watch just hit you at the perfect time or it’s just vibes with you completely, enjoy and love it.
I loved edgerunners but I’m not sure it even breaches top 20
I prefer it over others because it’s easily bingeable. I’m a new anime fan and I’ve only seen a few series and it’s definitely one of my top but I can appreciate other older anime’s that have been around longer receiving more praise
Ehh.....
It's good, but upon rewatching it, it had too many characters given how many episodes it had.
It's not the they weren't memorable, rather, There just weren't enough episodes for each one to be fleshed out properly.
watch one punch man, death note, or frieren next. they're some of my personal goats and very beginner friendly. they're animated by the same studio except season 2 of one punch man, so the animation is excellent all the way through.
They aren't the same studio? Edgerunners is animated by Trigger. The others are animated by Madhouse.
i didn't say cyber punk was animated by mad house
I misunderstood your comment. My mistake.
I wouldn’t put it in my top 5 osts. You also haven’t watched a lot of anime so probably shouldn’t be ranking them. Bleach isn’t exactly the greatest anime for example but it’s my fave OST. EDIT: Oh wait you’re not talking about soundtracks.
I don't know about top 5 of all time, but Studio Trigger is definitely a top 5 anime studio. Edgerunners is very good, better than 85% of anime easily. It's probably better than 90% even. But Edgerunners isn't even the best thing Trigger's ever made, and if you count the stuff they made when everyone at Trigger worked at Gainax then it's DEFINITELY not the best thing they've ever made.
There's a lot of really good anime out there, so much that it's hard to give someone in your position recommendations. If you liked Edgerunners then I recommend watching Gurren Lagann. If you like depressing stuff then check out the original Ghost in the Shell movie from 1995. JJK and Demon Slayer are good shows but there is literally so much anime out there that you would probably like a lot more.
If you want recommendations of what people unanimously think is really good then maybe check out Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. The thing is, anime is so varied that it's hard to assemble a "greatest of all time" list. I don't know if you're aware but anime is also divided into smaller sub-categories. The shows you've seen are called Shounen and they're aimed at a young male demographic and tend to be action heavy. If you ask people what the actual greatest anime ever made are in terms of objective quality, it'll be unlikely that any of those shows/movies have anything in common with what you've watched so far.
TL;DR: Watch more anime! If you thought Edgerunners was good then there's probably a lot more out there you'd also like!
Yes, it easily is
Nah, at least not for me. My top 5 would be:
Frieren
Psycho Pass
Death Note
A Silent Voice
Steins Gate
Funny code geass isnt there.seems like the type to like that show
Never watched it and I think by now i am a bit to spoiled in what happens as to be able to fully enjoy the show.
I put it in my top 10, maybe JUST outside my top 5. I LOVED every anime I watched as a teen, but as I have grown up I have realized the amount of cringe and filler in most anime is pretty astounding.
Edgerunners has an over the top style that only anime can pull off while being short enough to not overstay it's welcome and the lack of irritating and legitimately unrealistic internal monologuing that most "adult" anime has makes the characters seem like actual people. For example characters in Edgerunners feel much more realistic to me than Attack on Titan despite them both being in fantastical settings.
My top 10 is pretty run of the mill for someone who doesn't like Shonen: Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Iria:Zeiram the Animation, Project A-Ko, Goldenboy, Edgerunners, Panty and Stocking, Evangelion, Battle Angel, Cowboy Bebop
Yes definitely
It’s personally one of my top five but I’m not sure about oat
You really gotta watch more anime if you think it’s in the top 5 of all time. I mean that sincerely, trust 🙏 Fortunately, there have been some great recs in the replies. I’d add: Mob Psycho, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, Haikyu, Frieren, Gundam Thunderbolt (you could make an argument that this one’s a bit cyberpunky), the original Ghost in the Shell movie, Devilman: Crybaby, Code Geass, and Steins;Gate.
Part of the reason why Cyberpunk isn’t in the top 5 for me is the plot armor/holes. Why would Tanaka need to go in person to pick up his pornos? Why would Lucy think assassinating corpo edgerunners indefinitely was a good plan? Why not just leave NC? Why wait to go to the moon if “it doesn’t cost that much”? Why aren’t Lucy and David being transparent with each other? Like it takes countless dumb decisions to get to the ending. Don’t get me wrong, I love the show. But each watch raises more questions for me.
I will say that the world of Cyberpunk is much more well thought out than that of JJK. Gege is on record saying he doesn’t even understand the power system he authored. I sincerely think the only thing JJK has going for itself is the character design and the Japanese voice acting (which is almost always stellar no matter what you’re watching).
I enjoy other oats more
I don’t watch anime, like at all, it was never appealing to me, even if some of the things I see or hear do sound or look interesting.
That being said, I immediately watched Edgerunners when it dropped and I gotta say it’s definitely top 10 in animation for me. What a masterpiece
Obviously biased here but yes
to me yeah but that's just personal preference
Top 5 of all time, no. Top 50 oat, possibly. Top 100 definitely.
It was a very well done anime with top notch animation, score, and writing but it is also competing against 100 years of anime.
not even close to top 20
Oat? Like a top 5 breakfast cereal?
