I’ve always knew that those movies are made and they took stories from different cultures, like Aladdin and mulan and whatever .. but are there people who actually think that Disney invented those stories and made them into movies?
Do people think that the stories of classical Disney movies actually came from Disney?
CasualThey didn't. Me world is shook.
Yup, and there are also people who don't realize JK Rowling drew upon a lot of existing mythology in the Harry Potter books. I don't mean this to disrespect her as a writer (I have issues with her transphobia but that's a seperate isssue), it is perfectly fine and normal to create a fictional world based on pre-existing mythology. But a lot of people mistakenly believe she came up with things that are from previously existing stories, just as people mistakenly think stories like Snow White and The Little Mermaid were made by Disney.
As an American growing up reading and watching HP, one of my favorite elements were the Hogwarts houses. I thought they were a concept completely originated by JKR, and so I was always fascinated by what I thought was her own innovation.
Then, a couple of years ago, I met some online British friends who I would talk to regularly. Turns out, according to them, school houses were not an original concept by any means.
Apparently there are many schools in the UK (and other British ruled/associated countries) that have their class/grade divided into a house system, where they have friendly competition with one another as groups. I was absolutely shocked to learn this. I mean JKR did at least switch it up by creating the magical sorting hat and having one of the houses be mostly evil… but it still was like the illusion of JKR being this mastermind was shattered.
It's not her fault Americans don't know about the house system. To her she just took a common thing in the UK and added a magical aspect.
I wasn’t blaming her. It was just an illusion I had in my mind that got shattered once I was old enough to learn more. It wasn’t her fault I was a kid who didn’t know any better- it was just almost like another “finding out Santa isn’t real” moment.
Wow I didn’t know that harry potter books were based on already existing methodologies.. can you tell me where to find them?
The Little Mermaid is pretty much the story of Achilles’ parents.
The Little Mermaid was written by Hans Christian Anderson.
You’re right of course.
I got caught up on the similarities lol.
Isn’t this true for almost every story? Don’t all forms of media typically get inspiration from other stories/media?
Yeah thats true.. what i mean is there are people think that the original stories were written by Disney and not just inspired or whatever
I never really thought about it …
Think about it whenever you don’t have access to the internet.. its a good way to pass the time (thinking about random stuff like that)
If you want something to think about watch the movie Akira. I saw it last week on Hulu and it was crazy
Disney's lawyers work hard to stifle competition, and routinely steal from others.
